Batman V Superman images previewed in Entertainment Weekly

Batman_V_SupermanThe paperweight that thinks it is a magazine Entertainment Weekly has premiered some interesting images from the upcoming ‘dukeroo’ between the iconic heroes Batman and Superman. The new images depict the civilian identities of Batman and Wonder Woman (Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince) as well as a fully coiffed Lex Luthor and more.

While I viewed the Man of Steel as a decidedly strong step in the wrong direction, taking the colorful world of DC Comics into a world of muted grays and blues… I want this movie
to be a success.

I also want that Batman V Superman tee director Snyder can spotted wearing on set.

Directed by Zack Snyder with a script by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg and is scheduled for release on March 25th, 2016.

Batman vs. Superman becomes a trinity with Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman

The Amazon Princess is joining the still untitled ‘Superman Vs. Batman’ movie from Zack Snyder and David Goyer that will pick up from the events of The Man of Steel. Henry Cavill returns as Superman and will be facing off against Batman played by Ben Affleck, the latest in a growing line of actors to take up the cowl of the caped crusader.

The plot remains a mystery, but may be influenced by Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns comic from 1986 since Snyder has been meeting with the author.

The addition of a third hero to the film could make an already busy movie all the busier, but it could also quicken the pace toward a fully fleshed out Justice League of America, thus fulfilling many a comic book fan’s dreams.

Gal_Godot

Warner Bros. has announced this morning that Gal Gadot, most well known for appearing in the “Fast & Furious” films, has landed the role of Wonder Woman/Diane Prince in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Batman vs. Superman film.

In a statement, Zack Snyder stated: “Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe. Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character.”

Batman vs. Superman will feature the return of Henry Cavill as Superman, facing off against Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Also starring Amy Adams, Diane Lane and Laurence Fishburne, the Zack Snyder-directed Batman vs. Superman hits theaters on July 17, 2015.

Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines

wonderwomanDespite the inclusion of many female creations, comic books and the action adventure pulps that inspired them are mainly a man’s world. However, that’s not to say that there is not an audience that is entertained and inspired by woman heroes. The role of the superherone is firmly established today, but once upon a time that was not the case.

The most popular and successful superheroine has to be Wonder Woman, a creation by William Moulton Marston, also inventor of the lie detector. Marston felt that young men needed a strong female role model to protect them. Princess Diana of Themyscira was created by Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons from the very clay of the island itself. Her desire to have a daughter in a society populated entirely by women was granted by Athena. One of the few characters of her ilk, Wonder Woman was on a mission of peace, yet also a trained warrior princess. Earning her place as an ambassador to the ‘world of men,’ she left Paradise Island for a n unknown world of danger.

Popularized in print, Wonder Woman is one of three superheroes to remain in circulation from her inception (alongside Batman and Superman). She has also been adapted into other mediums. appearing in the Super Friends cartoon series and in the live action Wonder Woman program.

From 1975-1979, Lynda Carter starred as the Amazon Wonder Woman. Rather than simply an exciting TV series full of action and skimpy outfits, Carter injected some positive messages of female empowerment and peace. It was a bold move, and one that the studio was reluctant to pursue (it was dropped later on), but the mere presence of a strong woman who more often than not saved her male companion rather than the other way around made an impact on young viewers.

Strangely, no modern version of Wonder Woman has appeared since her TV program aside from a stellar animated feature and as part of the Justice League animated series. Nevertheless, the superheroine is a vital part of Western popular culture and one that continues to inspire and empower people fro, various backgrounds. A PBS documentary explored the phenomenon to a great degree which I highly recommend.

Cathy Lee Crosby, the other Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is without a doubt one of the casualties of modern comics. Everyone knows who she is, everyone loves her… but there are so few stories that you can point someone toward. There’s the Perez run of course and everyone knows of the Lynda Carter TV series… but that’s almost it (I do like the Byrne run, there are some interesting moments with Phil Jimenez and the Rucka material is worth looking into). Even though Lynda Carter is the iconic representation of Wonder Woman, the program itself is all but unseen.

So… here’s something even more obscure, a precursor to the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman starring Cathy Lee Crosby as a crime-fighting heroine (who bore a passing resemblance to the comic book character).

Wonder Woman 1974 TV pilot coming December 11 to DVD

D500

The Warner Archive Collection continues its rollout of fanboy-centric DC Comics properties with the December 11 DVD release of the original 1974 television pilot, WONDER WOMAN, starring Cathy Lee Crosby.

Before Lynda Carter took the heroine back to World War 2 for her “New, Original” incarnation in 1975, statuesque tennis pro-turned-performer Cathy Lee Crosby swung the magic lasso in a very different TV incarnation of WONDER WOMAN. As developed by scribe John D.F. Black (Star Trek, Shaft), and seemingly influenced by her recent turn as a mod, cat-suited crime-fighter in the pages of her DC Comics home, this Amazon Princess was more superspy than superhero. Still, many of the expected wondrous elements from bracelets and lassos to Paradise Island and invisible jets all make an appearance, albeit with a sleek, seventies espionage super-action refit. Three years before taking up residence on Fantasy Island, Ricardo Montalban plays laconic lothario Abner Smith, who lurks at the top of the conspiracy to make off with ultra-secret code books – leading Agent Prince to discover an Amazon sister-in-exile (Anitra Ford).

The DC Comics 52 Explosion Phase 2

The relaunch of DC Comics is in its next phase. Mere months after debuting 52 monthly books, some based on established characters while others were dusted off old concepts (such as OMAC). A handful were canceled to make way for Earth-2, World’s Finest, G.I. Combat and Dial H… and now we are seeing another cycle of death and rebirth as three more books are chopped and three new ones arrive.

What is more unsettling is that DC editorial seems to be struggling with some of their cornerstone properties. Superman and Catwoman will both be on their third change in creative teams, just what is the problem there?

In any case, September has been dubbed Zero Month and will take readers into the hallowed and well-traveled origins of their favorite heroes while also bringing in some new blood.

I have very mixed feelings about the four new books, Talon, Sword of Sorcery, Team 7 and Phantom Stranger but I must applaud the variety that is represented here. Talon is by the hot talent at DC Scott Snyder whom I have deeply enjoyed since he took over Detective then Batman, Phantom Stranger has Brent Anderson on art chores and the character is one of my favorites. Sword of Sorcery does nothing for me, but it’s great that another fantasy title will be joining Demon Knights. Team 7 seems like a 1990’s flashback, but there is a fan base for such things, so… what do I know?

In addition to the new titles, there are several zero issues that explore the origins of the New 52 DCU.

Shazam takes center stage in Justice League #0 while Aquaman #0 establishes the king of the seven seas and the fabled continent of Atlantis.

Earth-2 #0 stars the sadly deceased Wonder Woman, Superman and Batman of that parallel world and Green Arrow, the Flash, Wonder Woman and Hawkman all get special secret origin tales.

DC Universe Presents #0 introduces a new version of the Ditko classic heroes Hawk and Dove (has anyone outside of Ditko ever made sense of this due?) just as Captain Atom, Voodoo and Resurrection Man bow out with a zero issue… strangely.

It all strikes me as very bizarre to reboot your universe and a few months down the road amid the carnage of cancelled comics, special issues are released with origin stories. These are just quarter bin fodder as far as I can see. That’s not a slight on the material as most of it looks quite good, but it does appear to be a marketing disaster. The only issues that I plan to pick up are Batman, Batwoman (drawn by JH Williams!), Detective Comics (written by Gregg Hurwitz!) and Nightwing and that’s just because I’m in a bat-fever.

My main complaint isn’t with the material at all, but the scatter-shot nature of the releases.

There are some gems in here such as young John Constantine in Justice League: Dark written by Jeff Lemiere and an early Animal Man story by the same author. Legion of Superheroes will feature artwork by the always exciting Scott Kolins and Legion Lost welcomes the excellent Pete Woods.

GI Combat looks like an astonishingly superb issue that establishes the new Unknown Soldier, as well as more tales from the War that Time Forgot.

Even with all my whinging, there is a lot of high quality material here (hiding in the middle of the awful looking Grifter, Hawkman, Superman, Firestorm and the unlikely physique of Catwoman) and I hope that readers take the time to flip through a few, if only to respect the hard work and outstanding talent that went into them.

What issues are you picking up?

Welcome to Earth 2

A new title joining DC’s New 52 will arrive in just two months. Not just another monthly book, Earth 2 will establish another reality parallel to the established universe (which is still unclear on a few things). Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and other familiar characters exist on this other Earth, but with key differences.

Previously, Earth-2 in the DC Universe was a reality in which the superheroes fought in WWII and aged, had families, etc. The Batman of Earth-2 was an older married man with a daughter, Robin wore a redesigned costume and Power Girl was Superman’s cousin. After the Crisis of 1985, these continuities merged, causing inconsistencies that writers struggled valiantly to resolve. When the Multiverse came back into existence at the close of the year-long comic 52, the possibilities for other realities opened up. Finally those story opportunities are being explored in a new comic by James ‘Starman’ Robinson.

If this all looks familiar, it’s because Geoff Johns attempted something similar back in 2008 in the Justice Society of America monthly series. Likely it was put on the back burner due to the massive shake-up of continuity and DC Entertainment’s formation.

The parallel reality will be explored in a set of new books:

EARTH 2 – Writer: James Robinson. Artist: Nicola Scott. The greatest heroes on a parallel Earth, the Justice Society combats threats that will set them on a collision course with other worlds.

WORLDS’ FINEST – Writer: Paul Levitz. Artists: George Perez and Kevin Maguire. Stranded on our world from a parallel reality, Huntress and Power Girl struggle to find their way back to Earth 2. Perez and Maguire will be the artists on alternating story arcs.

Designs by Jim Lee for Wonder Woman and Batman have surfaced along with a new female Robin by Kevin Maguire along with a few snippets of information, reproduced here from CBR:

“I’m excited and eager to let people know all the facts about the new EARTH 2 comic, but for now I have to remain vague,” teased Robinson. “Earth 2 is a world that’s very like our own, but at the same time vastly different. It has known great conflict and danger…a dark menace defeated but at a great cost both to the Earth and to its superheroes of that time. Now, in the present as new menaces emerge to attack the Earth, so new heroes must emerge too, learning to work as a team (or perhaps Society is a better word) while facing these new threats head-on. Who are these heroes? Will their powers include speed, bestial fury, and maybe even green light? Wait and see.”

“Due the events that open the saga of EARTH 2, Wonder Woman is already the last Amazon of this world and she is determined to avenge her sisters…at whatever cost,” Robinson told DC’s blog, The Source. Series editor Pat McCallum weighs in as well, hinting at Earth 2 being a rather violent place, saying, “It’s one of the mysteries we’ll be getting into with the series. While there will be recognizable faces and settings on EARTH 2, don’t for a moment think you’re on familiar ground. Do that, and you let your guard down…and then you’ll end up like the rest of the Amazons.”

“Who will Batman kill to save his own daughter?” series editor Pat McCallum told the blog. “Right out of the gate that should tell you we’re dealing with a different kind of Dark Knight here. More ruthless, dangerous…the costume is familiar and yeah, there is a Wayne under the mask, but we’re looking at a man desperate to save the only family he has left. ‘Earth’ 2 is about to become a very bad place to be a bad guy.”

More as it comes…

Do the clothes make the (super)man?

The thoroughly post-modern Superman of 2012

The costumes that our iconic funny book heroes wear are as important as the deeds they perform or how well they stack up against other heroes. I’m not a big fan of Stephen King, but the argument of who’s stronger; Popeye or Superman interests me. It of course falls flat when one contender is a swarthy spinach munching seaman and the other a flying god-like being with his underwear on the outside of his pants (pre-52).

... it was the 70's. Don't judge.

That said, there have been several versions of editorial attempting to expand the fashion sense of Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Thor, each with their own set backs.

The Mighty Thunderstrike (Thor in the 90's)

Azrael, Batman in the 90's

Mike Deodato's biker-chic Wonder Woman

The Future Foundation Spider-Man costume

Superman Re/Superman Blue (let's call the whole thing off)

There was also the catchall solution of the 1990’s, the leather jacket. It actually made a come back in 2000, so don’t be surprised if the new Defenders start sporting Members Only coats.

Jackets... (The Avengers make a statement)

... Jackets... (Fantastic Four - Fashion Victims)

... Jackets (X-Men)

But nothing can prepare you for laundry day gone wrong when a rushed bachelor superhero finds that his long johns have become mixed in with another hero’s uniform… with awkward results.

Click on the image for more!

The return to the designs that made these heroes so impressive back in the day seem to arrive in cycles, made all the more noticeable when Hulk wears biker shorts or Superman sports a mullet. It begs the question, if it ain’t broke, why try and ‘fix’ it? Does anyone yearn for the Iron Spider costume or the all-body thong outfit that Thor rocked back in the day?

What’s your take? Should the heroes stick to what works or have there been some successful experiments that challenged the status quote (such as the black/white Spider-Man suit)?

Marvel Classic Character - The Fantastic Four #3: Human Torch

Marvel Classic Character – The Fantastic Four #3: Human Torch
Appearing in 1961, the Fantastic Four was the first superhero team created by writer/editor Stan Lee and artist and coplotter Jack Kirby. It ushered in the “Marvel Age” of comics and was an immediate success.

The third statuette in this series is Johnny Storm, better known as the Human Torch. Brother to Sue Storm and an original member of the Fantastic Four, the Human Torch is featured in his classic “Flame on!” pose. This ongoing character lineup presents these characters just as they originally appeared, but the statues feature a rougher surface texture, visible seam lines, and other slightly distressed aspects, such as paint-application techniques. Sculpted by Yoe! Studio.

At the Mountains of Madness: And Other Works of Weird Fiction (Tomb of Lovecraft)

At the Mountains of Madness: And Other Works of Weird Fiction (Tomb of Lovecraft)
When Prof. William Dyer, a geologist from Miskatonic University, investigates an abandoned, hieroglyphed city forged with weird non-human geometry in the ice-wastes of Antarctica, he uncovers evidence of an ancient and cataclysmic war waged between races of malignant aliens: long before the advent of the human race, the Elder Ones battled for supremacy with the Star-spawn of Cthulhu, leaving behind a lurking protoplasm of unimaginable cosmic evil. At The Mountains Of Madness is a crucial work in Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos, the author’s first interpretation of his occult paroxysms in science-fictional terms, dating dark entities back to the primordial aeons of the Earth’s existence. This new edition also includes Lovecraft’s two other major “science fantasy” stories: The Whisperer In Darkness and The Shadow Out Of Time, plus the related poem-cycle Fungi From Yuggoth, and a new introduction by DM Mitchell (editor, The Starry Wisdom).
