Age of Ultron, the Ant Man and the state of the Vision

Avengers2Avengers 2: Age of Ultron is getting ever closer which means more trailers. The latest trailer has revealed more shots of the team’s in-fighting, the Hulk Buster Iron Man armor and a few vague details surrounding the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver… who are probably not mutants.

The Vision

There are many comic book fans out there who are angry that the Avengers 2 film has decided to revise the character’s origin so that the android is a creation of Bruce Banner and Tony Stark. The defense is that the comic book version is too tangled for a movie… but he started as Ultron’s creation who infiltrated the Avengers. Later, it was revealed that Wonder Man and the original Human Torch were involved in his creation, but initially he was a double agent. It’s disappointing that this approach was ditched but… what can you do?

Ant Man
Ant-Man-Comic-Con_612x380

This is a real risk-taker of a film. The character has long been regarded as a joke (much like Aquaman), but this movie seeks to raise him to a level of respectability. Going into the first movie there is already a legacy of Ant Men and the villain is Yellow Jacket, another size-changing insect-based character.

The Ant Man movie has been in developmental Hell for ages with Edgar Wright attached since before the first Iron Man movie. However, my gut says that if Marvel handles this properly, it could be another Iron Man for them. Fingers crossed.

Meet the New Avengers

Begun in the 1960’s as a showcase for the top heroes in Marvel’s stable of characters, the Avengers united to defeat the villainous Loki. Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk (for a bit) Ant Man/Giant Man and the Wasp were the initial team, but after Captain America was rescued from a block of ice, the series found its heart and really took off. Since then there have been many many changes and throughout various dips in popularity, it has arguably eclipsed the X-Men as Marvel’s top tier property (with several spinoff monthly books and mini-series to be found on the shelves each month.

As the news world reels from one announcement to another, finally we have a visual of the latest team of Avengers. There are some big changes in here, some swapping around of characters, new faces and genders. The inclusion of the Winter Soldier, Doctor Strange, Ant Man, Deathlok and Scarlet Witch clearly hint at the need to tie into the Marvel Studios feature films and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series.

Via Newsarama (via EW.com)

Yes, the next phase of Marvel NOW!, Marvel Comics’ initiative that’s run twice offering new first issues and refreshed looks at characters, new creative teams, and some drastic changes, is focused solely on the Avengers line of their superhero universe. In an announcement late Wednesday night at EW.com, Marvel announced the new initiative, which will feature fresh first issues for their “big three,” plus new issues, storyarcs, and pushes for other Avengers characters. The characters in the teaser poster will all be getting “prominent” roles in the Marvel Universe as 2014 closes out and 2015 begins.

We already know about Thor #1, starring a new female Thor in October, and All-New Captain America #1 is confirmed as beginning in November, starring Sam “The Falcon” Wilson as the newest person to lift Captain America’s shield. Add to that Superior Iron Man #1 in November, featuring Tony Stark in San Francisco (incidentally, where Daredevil just moved earlier this year) with a new version of his suit, and “very ambitious plans for the city that some of its residents embrace, but not all,” teased Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Axel Alonso.

——————————————-

Of course, fans can all but rule out one often-speculated contender, Thor and Loki’s newly revealed half-sister Angela, as she appears in the Avengers NOW! teaser poster. Along with Angela, (new) Thor, Sam Wilson Captain America, and Iron Man in his new duds, we see The Winter Soldier and Deathlok, both of whom have newly-announced ongoing series, plus upcoming Marvel Studios “Phase 3” stars Ant-Man and Dr. Strange, Avengers: Age of Ultron star Scarlet Witch, and finally Medusa and Inferno of the Inhumans rounding out the list.

We’ll have much more on Avengers NOW! and any additional new series at Comic-Con International: San Diego next week.

This raises that time honored question… what is your favorite Avengers roster?

Petition Tybee Diskin for The Wasp!

waspMarvel’s Avengers film is one of the biggest money making flicks at the moment and promises to spin off into various other projects including sequels that explore the other members of the superhero team. One of the founding members who is often overlooked is the wondrous Wasp.

Ant Man met Janet van Dyne after he investigated the murder of her famous scientist father. He was almost immediately smitten by her, but reluctant to become involved after only recently becoming widowed. Nonetheless, they became partners in fighting crime when he mutated her body so that she could not only shrink her body to insect-size but also grow wings and was able to fire stings at her foes. Traditionally, she pestered the workaholic Pym for attention and flirted with everyone from Thor to Iron Man in order to make him jealous. In time she developed into a more fully fleshed out character and at one point even led the team.

Her abilities may seem even more useless than Ant Man’s, but it’s all in how you use her as a character, as you can no doubt see in the animated Avengers series where she single-handedly held her own against several heavy hitters. A spunky and sexy but courageous personality, there is a lot to gain by including the Wasp in the next Avengers film (and perhaps the Ant Man movie). But who should play the winsome Wasp?

Allow me to offer up a suggestion…

tybeewasppicsDear Edgar Wright, Joss Whedon, and the Casting Team at Marvel Studios,

We, the undersigned, do hereby voice our urgent and pressing desire to see actress Tybee Diskin auditioned for the role of Janet van Dyne, AKA The Wasp, in Edgar Wright’s upcoming adaptation of Ant-Man and the ongoing Avengers Saga.

Best known for her performance as Scarlett in the “Fallout: Nuka Break” webseries (based on the popular video game), Diskin has built a modest online entertainment empire on the strength of her comic timing, her casual naturalism, and her love of genre. While fans know and support Diskin as a comic action star, her background is in classical theater and informs her body of work with the practiced grace and timing of Hollywood’s enduring icons. Most recently, Diskin’s fan community brought her to the attention of 8 Sided Films, who has now cast her in the leading role of Dr. Chelsea Barrington in the upcoming science-fiction heist movie Quantum Theory.

For a look at Tybee Diskin’s reel, resume, and projects, visit her profile page on the 8 Sided Forum: http://www.8sidedforum.com/profile/TybeeDiskin

Casting the role of Janet van Dyne will undoubtedly present enormous challenges to you and your team. On the one hand, The Wasp is the emotional brain of the Avengers. Whoever takes this role must not only hold her own against the wit of Robert Downey Jr., the sensibility of Chris Evans, the passion of Chris Hemsworth and the depth of Mark Ruffalo, but will actually have to redirect and channel the epic conflicts that arise between these titans! On the other hand, The Wasp embodies everything that is truly great about the characters of Marvel Comics. Her approach to managing relationships is not to dominate or control people, but to hear, understand and work with them. Her wits and her sense of humor are her greatest weapons. The Wasp has gone up against some of the greatest supervillains in the Marvel Universe. She survives these encounters not by being tough, but by letting things go.

Who has the craft and the cool to walk into a room full of today’s most acclaimed performers and provide THAT kind of emotional leadership? Who’s quick enough on her feet to trick Tony Stark, sweet talk Steve Rogers, chastise Thor into apologizing and exasperate the Hulk into actually giving up and calming down? Who looks great in the yellow wings and MEANS IT?

TYBEE DISKIN! But don’t take our word for it! Gentlemen, all we ask is that you audition her.

Yours truly,
The Fans and Colleagues of Tybee Diskin

Marvel Classic Characters - The Fantastic Four #4: The Thing

Marvel Classic Characters – The Fantastic Four #4: The Thing
Benjamin Jacob “Ben” Grimm, better known to the world as the Thing, has become one of the best-known comic-book characters of all time. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, he pilots into space on the fateful mission that results in the creation of the Fantastic Four. Transmogrified into an orange humanoid monster, the Thing nevertheless retains his sense of humor, his bright blue eyes, and a big ol’ heart of pure gold. His trademark battle cry, “It’s clobberin’ time!” is world famous.

This ongoing character lineup presents these characters just as they originally appeared, but the statues feature a rougher surface texture, visible seam lines, and other slightly distressed aspects, such as paint-application techniques. Sculpted by Yoe! Studio.

Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde HC Vol. 05 Happy Prince

Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde HC Vol. 05 Happy Prince
By: P. Craig Russell
The Happy Prince is arguably the most famous and well loved of Oscar Wilde’s nine fairy tales, rivaled only by The Selfish Giant. It is also a very timely tale at a time of controversy over the increasing chasm between rich and poor.

The Happy Prince has lived a life of opulence but has died young, and his soul inhabits a beautiful ruby encrusted statue covered all over in gold leaf. From his perch high above the city he is witness to all the poverty, misery, and hopelessness in which his people have been living.

When a small barn swallow in flight to the warm south ahead of the approaching winter stops to rest upon the statue the Happy Prince prevails upon him to delay his travels in order to remove his gold leaf a piece at a time and shower it upon the poor citizens.

Out of love for the Happy Prince the swallow does his bidding. As the days pass the Prince’s beauty is stripped away and as winter sets in the bird’s fate is sealed.

In the spring the townspeople finding only a dull statue with a broken lead heart and a dead bird consign the worthless objects to the ash heap. Only an emissary of God recognizes them as the most valuable treasures of the city and brings them to the gardens of heaven.

Frank Frazetta! He’s been rightfully called ‘The Grand Master of Fantasy Art’! But, it’s little known that Frazetta also conquered other worlds in the Golden Age of Comics, as shown in his Donald Duck-ish funny animal and hilarious hillbilly comic book stories.

Even those aware of this wonderful Frazetta art don’t know the extent–this book is a whopping 256 page, large-format pages! Did we mention ferocious, terrifying wolves and swampland creatures in the plethora of animal stories illustrations as only Frazetta could draw them?

There’s also lions and tigers and bears–oh my!–before Frazetta’s famous paintings captured the same subjects. But wait, there’s more! (As they say.) You’ll see the roots of the Frazetta Girl in the sexy Kathy teenage girl adventures. And there’s the hot Daisy Mae-look-alike, Clarabelle, in the hillbilly hi-jinks stories of her beau, Looey Lazybones (Holy Li’l Abner!).

The introduction is by the famed cartoon director Ralph Bakshi who well knew Frazetta and closely worked with him when they co-produced the animated feature film, ‘Fire and Ice.’ Bakshi shares rare insights, anecdotes, photos and Frazetta drawings.

And Bakshi has created a special painting of Frazetta and himself as funny animals for this beautiful hardcover full-color coffee table book! Frank Frazetta’s Funny Stuff is edited and designed by Eisner award-winner Craig Yoe.

Mr Fixit Hulk Statue

Mr Fixit Hulk Statue
Thanks to his exposure to gamma radiation, Bruce Banner would, when enraged, transform into a giant, savage creature called the Hulk.

Ordinarily, the Hulk would be a giant green creature, but in the 1980s, as Banner grappled with his personality, he went through a phase where he transformed into a gray Hulk who, for a time, went by the name Mr. Fixit.

This cunning, erudite Hulk worked as a Las Vegas bouncer and wore a tuxedo with a white jacket, and now fans can add this 13 1/2″ tall statue of Mr. Fixit, sculpted by Khurram Alavi, to their collections.

Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes – ‘Acts of Vengeance’

‘Acts of Vengeance’

Transmitted April 15, 2012

The Avengers cartoon continues to impress with its inter-connected stories that develop an epic-scale adventure that would do the Mighty Marvel Bullpen proud. In the comic book series, back in the day, it was not unusual to witness seeds laid throughout several issues that would harvest a massive event. In much the same way, the Avengers animated series mimics this structure with stories that delve into the past year’s Masters of Evil/Asgard tale and connect into the current Skrull invasion arc.

Last year, Baron Zemo allied with the Enchantress and the Executioner along with several other villains to form the Masters of Evil. Backed by an army consisting of Asgardian might along with the Abomination and others, Zemo collected the mythical Norn stones and struck at the heart of the Avengers. Realizing that she held far too much power, Zemo betrayed the Enchantress and was later defeated by the Avengers. Well… the Enchantress is back for vengeance and she is striking out at everyone who ever associated with the masked super villain.

Alongside the Enchantress’ mission to take down each of Zemo’s associates, the Avengers are coincidentally attempting to round up the Masters of Evil. In each instance, they arrive just after she has left her mark; the Living Laser is found stuck in fluid light form, Chemistro is a solid gold statue, even the mastermind Arnim Zola is in bad shape. In some ways this is good news and Hawkeye sees it as a reason to celebrate, but Iron Man and Black Panther are less comfortable with the possibility that someone else is attacking these foes with such force.

When Baron Zemo arrives in the Avengers Mansion asking for help, it becomes clear just how bad the situation is. Backed by the Abomination and Wonder Man, Zemo is nevertheless powerless against the Enchantress and figures that with the Avenger Thor on his side, he’ll stand a better chance of living through her attacks.

Unfortunately, Thor is in Asgard, where the Twilight Sword is nowhere to be found. Odin, Baldur and Thor realize with much shock that the fire giant Surtur is freed from his prison… which is bad news for everyone.

Back at Avengers HQ, Hulk and Hawkeye agree that they should just smash Zemo and the Abomination, but again Iron Man and Black Panther realize that Zemo has left a trail straight to them, so they are involved whether they like it or not. Fortunately, Tony Stark has developed a ‘magic dampener’ which should give the team an edge when the Enchantress arrives, but in the meantime, Iron Man is determined to intercept the two magical menaces who have followed a trail left by Zemo to the Crimson Dynamo, who he expects to sacrifice himself for a greater cause.

It’s interesting to see Zemo casually discuss tactics and leadership with Stark who rushes off with Hawkeye to give Crimson Dynamo some much-needed assistance. While they are gone, Zemo attempts to goad an unusually quiet and stoic Captain America by insisting that he operate the machinery that will protect Zemo from the Asgardian magic.

When the chips are down, Zemo faces the Enchantress, sure that Cap will activate the magic dampener in time to save him, but the patriot seems more than happy to watch the villain squirm. At the final moment, the device goes into effect and the team lashes out. When Zemo reveals that he had secreted away a final Norn stone and attempts to kill the Enchantress, Wonder Man intercedes and all Hell breaks loose. There is a tear in reality and the Enchantress disappears. Earlier in this story, Black Panther had attempted to appeal to Wonder Man’s moral standards, and apparently he somewhat succeeded, but at a price. In time, maybe Simon Williams will be a full fledged Avenger.

Still groggy from the explosion, Zemo awakens to find Captain America hovering over him. He had misjudged the star spangled avenger, he has changed. In fact, he isn’t Captain America at all, or even human. In last year’s conclusion, viewers saw a Skrull Captain America reporting back to his commander that he had infiltrated the Avengers. With an enemy in their midst, how can they defend the planet from the oncoming invasion?

I honestly had very low expectations from this episode, feeling that it had little to offer, but in the end it was quite good. With the shifting of focus from the Enchantress to Thor and even to Crimson Dynamo, Iron Man and Hawkeye then returning to the team, this really felt like a larger than life story crammed into twenty plus minutes.

The Enchantress and Executioner are out for blood

Zemo and the Masters of Evil need help

Hawkeye and Hulk agree that they should just smash Zemo and be done with it

There's trouble in Asgard

Captain America is not who (or even what) he appears to be

Very sadly, it seems that the Avengers cartoon may end with this season as newly appointed Marvel Animation leader Jeph Loeb will be revamping the cartoon into another program that it similar to the 1980’s style and less reliant on story arcs. It will apparently be part of the same universe as the new Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon… which is even sadder news.

Is this a sign of the much feared Disney-ification of Marvel or just a coincidence? It’s hard to tell, but the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon has hardly fared well and is a very poor cousin to the Spectacular Spider-Man series that preceded it (available on DVD). The voices of support for Avengers are very loud and Marvel Animation needs to listen. This is a great cartoon that mimics the experience of following a monthly comic book. It’s also a great in-road to those interested in the characters but unwilling to explore the print medium. In addition, it delivers so much fun for long-standing fans who know each iteration of the Masters of Evil and the story of the Cosmic Cube. It’s as near to perfect as you can get.

Please, don’t let this cartoon get the ax.

Quick reviews: Spider-Man, Batman and Robin, Avengers and Nightwing

Amazing Spider-Man #582

By: Dan Slott and Stefano Caselli
Dan Slott has been making Spider-Man fans happy since he came on board as series writer with ‘Big Time.’ Peter Parker is no longer the awkward loser of the Marvel Universe, he’s a recognized genius and has saved the population of Manhattan from a spider-infestation. Of course he still has girl trouble and the bad guys just seem to be getting crazier. One of the most interesting innovations of the Slott Spider-Man run has been the many inventions that Parker has developed at Horizon Labs, a kind of brain trust for research and development. From a suit that reduces sound to invisibility and special spider-bombs for any occasion, Spidey is ready for anything.

The Ends of the Earth has been billed as the major Spider-Man event of the summer, much like last year’s Spider-Island story. Doctor Octopus is dying (as seen from his appearances in both Spider-Man and Iron Man books). His body is rapidly decaying as more of it is replaced with tentacled armor. But he will not go silently into his eternal sleep, he’s taking half the world with him. He’s also allied himself with the rest of the Sinister Six for security.

Using a satellite hovering above the planet, Doc Ock gives one half of the planet a taste of death by global warning and then claims that he can solve it… for a price. The result is surprising as everyone from the average person on the street to the Avengers debates cooperating with a person that Spider-Man knows as a super-villain. Outraged and annoyed, Spider-Man dons a unique suit of armor designed to defeat each member of the Sinister Six.

Spider-Man is one of those monthly books that has consistently impressed me with its high quality stories and usually solid art (with a few exceptions). Guest artist Stefano Caselli (of Secret Warriors) is a good fit for this adventure and as it gives him the chance to draw some of the Avengers, I’m really looking forward to seeing the next issue.

With the feature film reboot and new animated series, you may be bitten by the Spider-Man bug (as it were) and start looking for a comic to read. This is a great time to jump on and enjoy the ride.

Batman and Robin #7

By: Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason

One thing almost everyone can agree on is that there are far too many Batman books on the shelves. Unfortunately, most of them are very good. Batman and Robin has been a solid series since its rebirth with the new 52 as it has focused on the relationship between Bruce and Damian Wayne. Raised by his mother Talia Al Ghul, Damian is master assassin and expert gymnast. He’s also just a child and has not gotten the opportunity to have anything close to a normal childhood. Being reunited with Bruce and later taking on the mantle of Robin, Damian has proven his loyalty to the war against crime and to his father, but he’s still shifty enough to keep readers guessing.

In the first story arch, Peter Tomasi has created a new villain NoBody, the child of Henri Ducard, the man who trained Bruce during his formative years. A character created by Batman (1989) writer Sam Hamm, Ducard walks a thin line bordering the role of a master criminal. His son has no such trouble crossing that line and claims that it makes him a greater man than Bruce. Armed with a unique throwing blade and wearing state of the art stealth tech, NoBody makes a claim to replace Batman, a challenge that the dark knight is reluctant to honor.

The previous issues have seen the rich back story of NoBody unfold as Bruce vainly attempts to protect Damian from him by keeping his son in the dark. The plan backfires and Damian ends becoming involved, as NoBody’s apprentice. In the latest issue, Batman and NoBody finally face off while Damian’s life hangs in the balance.

Not everyone likes Robin. I get it. But he can provide a good foil for Batman when used well (as he is here). Damian is in a way, the dark brooding killing machine that Bruce could be if he lets his war against crime get the better of him. But there is so much potential in training Damian to be a better man for Batman to just give up on him. The series is full of great action, superb art and some impressive new ideas. It’s always tough to introduce a new villain (look at the trouble the Dark Knight monthly book is having with the White Rabbit), but NoBody is a great addition to the rogue’s gallery. If you haven’t been reading this series, you really should give it a look.

Avengers #24.1

By: Brian Michael Bendis and Brandon Peterson

It’s Bendis’ last Summer with Marvel, so it’s his last dance with the Avengers. I have had mixed feelings on his run, but in recent years he has raised his game with some of the most impressive stories crossing through both Avengers and New Avengers (note to Marvel, come up with a snappier title for one of these…. please!). The final curtain will fall on AVX as the Avengers and X-Men cross swords with the fate of humanity in the balance… but before that can happen, Bendis has thrown in this odd character study of the Vision, a hero that is very popular with fans.

An android created by Ultron (who was in turn created by Hank Pym), the Vision is a synthetic being on what seems to be a never-ending journey to find himself. It’s funny that around the same time that the Vision popped up, Red Tornado appeared over at DC Comics with a similar situation. Probably just a coincidence. After marrying the Scarlet Witch, the Vision had two magical children who later turned out to not be real at all, driving the Scarlet Witch into a fit of madness that caused the worst cataclysm to ever strike the Avengers. In the uproar of violence, She-Hulk went into a berserker rage and split the Vision in half, after Ultron bombs spat from his mouth.

The latest issue sees the Vision attempting to reconnect with the world and put the past behind him. While I enjoyed this issue, I have to say that his soulful talk with She-Hulk was undercut by her thong. It’s hard to be angry at a voluptuous woman in a costume that revealing.

This Point One issue isn’t going to fly to the top of anyone’s read pile, but it makes for a change of pace from the madness that has filled the Avengers family of comics and will surely do so again throughout the Summer. I expect many things from an Avengers comic by Bendis, but subtlety isn’t one of them. I was pleasantly surprised to find that here.

Nightwing #7

By Kyle Higgins and Eddy Barrows
In sharp contrast to the negative reaction to Robin, Nightwing has a very dedicated fanbase and has been a much beloved hero since he was introduced many moons ago (back when he wore a dickey). Rising from Batman’s shadow, Dick Grayson carved a name out for himself and led the Teen Titans into battle. He’s definitely his own man, but editorial interference has made his path more than a little bumpy in recent years. After escaping death by DiDio, Nightwing floundered about and was finally given the mantle of Batman.

The Dick Grayson Batman issues (collected in Black Mirror and Eye of the Beholder) are superb and well worth a read. They are so good that I was more than a little disappointed to see Bruce return to form and Dick re-appear in the 52-verse as Nightwing. However, his stories are still worth reading and for the first time in ages, Nightwing feels like a book with a solid direction.

In the new Nightwing series, Grayson has come back into contact with his old friends from his circus days. It was a brilliant move dramatically to place Dick as the new manager of Haley’s Traveling Circus and it opened up the possibilities for new locales and new adventures. The villain Saiko (not to be confused with the precision wristwatch) has been only so-so as a threat (he looks like a character who dropped off the drawing board from Marvel in the 1990’s), but the mystery surrounding Haley’s Circus has been more than enough to keep things interesting.

The latest issue wraps up the Saiko/Haley’s Circus story and dovetails into the Nite of the Owls. Dick discovers some dark secrets from his past and things get a little more dangerous for him as he realizes, just as Batman has, that nothing is what it seems. I don’t want to give too much away, but the reveal was a bit of a head scratcher. I do have high hopes that the Nite of the Owls will deliver on what is frankly an awkward turnabout involving a hidden tooth and a well-placed right hook.

Life is complicated in comics…

The artwork by Eddy Barrows has been solid and remains one of the big attractions for me to this series (not to downplay the script). If you are a fan and have been waiting on a good Nightwing series, this could be your lucky day.

Battle Royale Blu-ray DVD

Battle Royale Blu-ray DVD
In a future where society is on the verge of collapse, the government takes drastic action against the problem of rebellious teenagers in this violent sci-fi opus from Japan. In the year 2002, Japan’s economy has taken a dramatic turn for the worse, and massive unemployment and inflation have thrown most adults into a state of chaos; the nation’s youth culture responds with unprecedented violence, delinquency, and truancy. Desperate to restore order, the Japanese parliament responds by creating the Millennial Reform School Act, in which groups of junior high students are selected at random, sent to an isolated island, and forced to play a rigorous war game, in which all but one of their number are killed. Kitano (Beat Takeshi) is an embittered school instructor who guides the 44 students of the Zentsuji Middle School’s Class B through the deadly game known as ‘Battle Royale,’ as they struggle to survive against the elements and each other. BATTLE ROYALE proved to be both successful and highly controversial in Japan, where it set box-office records and prompted political leaders to call for stricter controls on violence in Japanese entertainment; the film was initially rated R-15 (no one under 15 admitted), unusual for violent films in Japan, though director Kinji Fukasaku later prepared a re-edited version that earned a more lenient

Our TV secret agents have worn masks and capes, fought in the historical past, been as stylish as Napoleon Solo in The Man From U.N.C.L.E., or have been as frumpy as George Smiley in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Dr. Wesley Britton has compiled the first indispensable reference book on television espionage unveiling the secrets behind our beloved favorites and the programs that disappeared without a trace.
