Grant Morrison’s All Star Superman-now an animated feature film

Via CBR’s Spinoff: Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly’s fan favorite homage to the Silver Age Superman series is being adapted as an animated feature film. Written by Dwayne McDuffie, the film will feature an all-star cast: James Denton (Desperate Housewives) as Superman, Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) as Lois Lane, Anthony LaPaglia (Without a Trace) as Lex Luthor, and Ed Asner (Up) as Perry White.

As much as I defend the many voice actors who are not Kevin Conroy who have voiced Batman, I have to admit that I’m with the horde of nay-sayers on the lack of the classic Tim Daly as Superman and Clancy Brown as Lex Luthor. I’m also tired of the endless parade of Batman and Superman animated features as well as adaptations of comic books. Where’s the love for Aquaman and the Flash? Also, All Star Superman struck many as awe-inspiring but for someone like myself who has read the original Silver Age material that Morrison was channeling, it was old hat. Still, if you’re going to imitate something, the Silver Age Superman comics are ideal, so everyone wins in the end. This is also exactly what the next attempt at a Superman movie should be, bigger and more fantastic than life but poignantly human and sincere, Morrison at his best.

All that said, All Star Superman is an absolutely wonderful choice for the animation treatment and is sure to be a hit for DC Entertainment. The trailer is decidedly grimmer in tone than the fanciful source material, but I hope that is down to the editing of the teaser to pull on viewers.

All-Star Superman is produced by Bruce Timm and directed by Sam Liu (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths)and is set for release in spring 2011.
