Batman Returns (again)

I have dreams of owning one of the amazing replicas produced by Hot Toys. From Star Wars to the Avengers and beyond, these replicas are stunning. Based on the second Michael Keaton Batman film, this model uses the redesigned costume complete with art deco touches
batman-returns14-625x436

Hot Toys takes collectors back to 1992, and the cinematic world of Tim Burton, with the unveiling of its 1/6th-scale Batman and Bruce Wayne collectible figures from Batman Returns.

These are actually two releases, one the Batman figure and the other the Batman and Bruce Wayne set. The former boasts three interchangeable lower faces that capture Michael Keaton’s expressions, nine interchangeable palms, a batarang, grapple gun, two napalm packets, a line launcher, a Batmobile remote control, a signal jammer, and an LED light-up figure stand.

The Batman and Bruce Wayne set, naturally, comes with two figures, with this Dark Knight also equipped with a broken cowl. His tuxedo-clad alter ego, meanwhile, comes with eight interchangeable palms, a figure stand and “movie-accurate” facial features, although some collectors are already questioning the latter (if you squint, it kind of looks like Michael Keaton).

Both releases are targeted for the third or fourth quarter of this year.

Who’s your Batman?

It may seem absurd today, but back in the day it was something of a shock that when a Batman feature film was planned for a summer 1989 release, actor Adam West got passed over. He was hardly happy about the situation. He wasn’t even asked to make a cameo!

Today there are many iterations of the caped crusader with more on the way. Everyone has their favorite (or favorites) and their most hated actor to don the cowl.

So who is yours?

RiffTrax chronicles Batman’s battle with the Wizard!

It’s Friday night. You’re bored and Saturday night can’t come quickly enough for Doctor Who. What better way to fill the time than with a long forgotten story depicting the most exciting adventure of the world’s greatest detective?

… or a hilariously awful Batman serial.
batman-the-complete-1943-movie-serial-collection-20051110034642101-000

Here it is, at last, the FINAL EPISODE chronicling Batman’s struggle against the Wizard! The suspense is thick, and everyone’s wondering: who will prevail and be victorious? Will it be the nefarious Wizard or — wait, oh come on, it’s right there in the stupid title! That’d be like titling the Seinfeld finale “They wind up in jail” or the Lost finale “Don’t bother watching.”

One thing the title doesn’t give away is the identity of the Wizard, most likely because the writers of the serial didn’t get around to deciding who that would be until they started shooting the final scenes of this episode. Is it the old occasionally-in-a-wheelchair guy? Or occasionally-in-a-wheelchair guy’s butler? Convenient-provider-of-exposition radio guy? Vicki Vale’s dead brother, who everybody seems to have completely forgotten about, including her? I think we all know the real answer: Gabe. Gabe, you beautiful mastermind, you’ve been pulling the strings all along! Bless you, sweet prince.

Batman at 75

batman_75_years_logo_a_lBatman has turned 75 and while the media has been abuzz about it, WB may seem somewhat silent. While Batman Vs. Superman is being pushed to 2016 and the latest cartoon Beware the Batman has been cancelled, there are still some wonderful ways to honor the dark knight detective on his birthday.

GalleryComics_1900x900_20140409_BM_ETERNAL_1_531f54675a0a25.23091103Batman Eternal

Scott Snyder continues to knock it out of the park with his ongoing Batman series with artist Greg Capullo, but he has also helmed a new ongoing series Batman Eternal (debuting this week at your local comic shop). More of an anthology comic rather than one focused on Batman himself, the new book will explore various corners of Gotham City and the Bat-family.

3731115-1-b05c1bb930Detective Comics

The new creative team of Brian Buccelleto and Frances Manapul will be taking Detective Comics into an avenue closer to crime-investigation than has been seen before. The first issue came out last week and is worth checking out. I am a big fan of their work together on The Flash for the New 52 and think that good things could come from this series.

Son of Batman (click to Pre-order)

The Warner Bros Animation series of films continues to release impressive films with Son of Batman (based on the run by Grant Morrison and others) next in line. While it’s not out until next month, preview clips have been coming in and the movie appears to be another excellent project. If you missed out on the comic book version, this is a great story that provides a new angle on Batman and a very different take on Robin, the boy wonder.

Strange Days

Batman animation maven Bruce Timm has returned to the fold for a new animated short ‘Strange Days.’ Hearkening back to the early days of the caped crusader, Strange Days is evocative of the old Max Fleisher Superman cartoons (a style near and dear to Timm’s heart). Created especially for the 75th birthday, the short premiers tonight on Cartoon Network.

Arkham Origins (click to buy)

There is also new DLC for Batman: Arkham Origins which expands the rogues gallery with the addition of Mister Freeze, playable Bruce Wayne, a new cold-weather environment suit and many more gadgets to fill those utility belt pouches. This game has gotten a lot of flack from gamers for not living up to the Arkham anthology hype, but personally I like it a lot and am looking forward to this new chapter.

Happy Valentine’s Day

In honor of the day of leurve, here are two mini-entries. One is an excerpt from the DP tumblr feed (you are following, I hope!).

This is one of a set Batman Valentine’s Day cards released in the 1960’s. It’s good to know that they were carefully preserved and not given to anyone. Phew!

Batman_Valentine

Additionally, here’s a time honored song in three parts from the Marx Brothers film, Horse Feathers. Zeppo, Chico and Groucho all join in singing their own version of the melody. Even Harpo whistles up a ditty to a special someone.

DPValentines

I wish all of my readers a Happy Valentine’s Day and if you are without a valentine tonight, and someone asks, just tell them it’s me and they’ll be duly impressed.
