Fox missed a trick with the Wolverine

I am a huge fan of the X-Men. One of the first comic books I recall reading is The Days of Future Past saga from Uncanny X-Men 141-142. Even as my habit grew and I collected other titles, I retained my love for the (not so) merry mutants. The appeal for me was that they were always on the run, always living life on the edge. Spider-Man may have rent and ailing family members to worry about but the X-Men were attacked by foes from the future, threatened by alternate realities, hunted by the government and at war with extremists.

Byrne-X-men-Montage-SmallThe 20th Century Fox X-Men film series modernized the mythology of the comic book, often taking liberties with the source material but keeping the soul of the Marvel Comicverse while adding new elements that appealed to those unfamiliar with comics in general. It was a bold move but X-Men is the longest continuing line of movies based on comic book characters to date chronicling seven theatrical outings (if you count X-Men Origins: Wolverine).

The imaginative designs of the superheroes seen in print was stripped down to leather gear that bore only a hint at an X-design. In the year 2000, it was understandable as viewers were unlikely to accept colorful costumes.

x-men-movie_fox

However, with the success of several Marvel Studios films, the superhero costumes are now much more easily palatable to the average viewer. Clearly Fox was considering embracing the ‘yellow spandex’ that was once scoffed at as seen in an alternate ending to the 2013 Wolverine film in which he received a special package containing an outfit not dissimilar to the classic design.

Wolverine-yellow-costume-2

A version of the yellow and blue outfit was seen in X-Men: First Class as well, but the series was still very self conscious of looking silly. Unfortunately, the Wolverine scene was cut which I think is a missed opportunity.

With the revision of the timeline in Days of Future Past erasing X-Men: Last Stand, the sky is the limit for the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. Perhaps we will finally see a blend of the colorful and practical designs, embracing the comic book origins of the X-Men.

Until then… print cut and wear this mask.

The Wolverine 2013-full trailer

Wolverine_Byrne_BW I’ve been a big fan of Wolverine since I was a teen. A mean little scrapper with a temper, I saw a kindred spirit. Of course he made it look cool while I got time outs. It’s hard to imagine that once upon a time Wolverine was unpopular enough with X-Men readers that he narrowly missed the ax that caught Thunderbird. He blossomed into a fan favorite after Chris Claremont and John Byrne developed the character into an animalistic hombre. As the monthly comic garnered acclaim and awards, it also became decidedly violent and bloody. Wolverine’s infamous ‘all red’ killing sprees pulled in new readers and continue to make the mutant a major star on the racks (though he does ebb and flow these days).
wolverine_Byrne_X-Men

Of course things really came together for wolverine when Claremont teamed up with young Frank Miller on a four-part solo adventure set in Japan that added another facet to the character. Whereas he was simply a tough killing machine before, a tragic lone samurai was shown to be lurking beneath the steel-like tough guy veneer. Forever the outsider, Logan wandered the world looking for peace and found only bloodshed.
Wolverine_Miller_3

In film, the unlikely Broadway darling Hugh Jackman has embodied the character of Wolverine so well that even after two lackluster outings, fans are still willing to give him another go. The latest movie is said to take great inspiration from the Claremont/Miller series and even introduces some new ideas such as an emotionally tortured and distraught Wolverine seeking an end to his suffering only to find a real purpose, at the expense of his remarkable healing factor.

What’s particularly interesting to me is how they have recreated some key moments from the Miller comic such as the bar room brawl (seen here).

wolverine_miller_detail

The Wolverine strikes July 2013.

Personally, I’d love to see a 1950’s Wolverine film starring Humphrey Bogart where he investigates a mystery, drinks, talks a lot then in the final scene unexpectedly pops claws out his hands and slaughters a bunch of gangsters.

That would be something… wouldn’t it?

First look at Wolverine: Origins the Game

At the recent New York Comic Con, Raven Software’s Dan Vondrak was on hand to debut footage from the upcoming video game based on the X-Men Origins: Wolverine film.

Fans were ecstatic over the footage and bubbling with questions. As ids usually the case, the game will expand upon the story line told in the movie, adding sequences to flesh out the game, but also attempting to capture the spirit of the movie. As players utilize Wolverine in different ways, he will automatically upgrade in specific ways based upon the gameplay. Aside from all that, the game will feature sequences influences from a variety of sources, including the classic comic books.

When asked to cite an example, Vondrak stated pointed out one where “Wolverine’s fight with the Hellfire Club and the Hellfire guards. A scene from the upcoming movie, where he runs up to guards in the hallway and stabs both at the same time. There is a finishing move in the game where you kill two downed enemies at one time.” Yet this sounds hauntingly similar to a classic Byrne/Claremont issue, doesn’t it?

The concluding panel of Uncanny X-Men 132

The concluding panel of Uncanny X-Men 132

Yet the biggest surprise was the footage shown of the wily Canadian facing off against a MK I Sentinel in a stockyard. The crowd went nuts, and with good reason. This being the fourth (kinda) X-Men film, it would be nice to finally see our hero battle the mutant hunting robots, wouldn’t it?

Virgin Comics’ Nowhere Man

Virgin Comics has been making a rather impressive impact on the comic book market. With titles such as Dave Stewart’s Zombie Broadway, Ed Burns’ Dock Walloper and even a re-invention of the classic UK series Dan Dare there seems to be no limit to the ‘new kid on the block’ publisher. In an extension of their star power-infused comics, a new series is on its way from Marc Guggenheim (creator of the TV series Eli Stone) and Hugh ‘Wolverine’ Jackman.

There is an interesting article on Comicbookresources.com focusing on the sci-fi comic book series depicting a future world where privacy is swapped for security.

The always candid Guggenheim said the secrecy surrounding the project is very much by design, but did shed a little more light on the book’s direction. “It’s basically a science fiction book, set in the far future and it deals, essentially, with the Patriot Act on steroids, but in a totally surprising way. It’s one thing to say ‘the Patriot Act on steroids,’ but you have to know the kind of steroids we are talking about here.

“They really completely upend any notion of personal privacy that you might have. One of things we all initially talked about was how the best science fiction had things to say about today. By telling stories about the future, we are telling stories about the here and now. And obviously, in the wake of 9/11, we all, as Americans, have a choice to make, in terms of our security versus our personal privacy and where do you strike that balance. It’s obviously something a lot of politicians, and judges and lawyers and citizens and patriots have debated. Not just after 9/11 but before 9/11. I think we have a chance to say something interesting and new about the topic. Plus we have a really cool, very kick-ass science fiction story to tell.”

Guggenheim continued, “It’s actually a very human-oriented book. That’s what’s really great about it. There are different kinds of science fiction. There is science fiction like ‘Alien,’ like ‘Star Wars,’ where aliens and extraterrestrials or paranormal stuff co-exists with the world and then there’s stuff like ‘Firefly’ and ‘Blade Runner’ where the concept is more, even though it’s science fiction, it’s more grounded in the human drama. And this is very much a human drama. I won’t promise a complete lack of cool science fiction sensibilities, but it’s always going to be channeled through real human, flesh and blood characters. Not aliens and robots and such.”
