Marvel Classic Characters - The Fantastic Four #4: The Thing

Marvel Classic Characters – The Fantastic Four #4: The Thing
Benjamin Jacob “Ben” Grimm, better known to the world as the Thing, has become one of the best-known comic-book characters of all time. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, he pilots into space on the fateful mission that results in the creation of the Fantastic Four. Transmogrified into an orange humanoid monster, the Thing nevertheless retains his sense of humor, his bright blue eyes, and a big ol’ heart of pure gold. His trademark battle cry, “It’s clobberin’ time!” is world famous.

This ongoing character lineup presents these characters just as they originally appeared, but the statues feature a rougher surface texture, visible seam lines, and other slightly distressed aspects, such as paint-application techniques. Sculpted by Yoe! Studio.

Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde HC Vol. 05 Happy Prince

Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde HC Vol. 05 Happy Prince
By: P. Craig Russell
The Happy Prince is arguably the most famous and well loved of Oscar Wilde’s nine fairy tales, rivaled only by The Selfish Giant. It is also a very timely tale at a time of controversy over the increasing chasm between rich and poor.

The Happy Prince has lived a life of opulence but has died young, and his soul inhabits a beautiful ruby encrusted statue covered all over in gold leaf. From his perch high above the city he is witness to all the poverty, misery, and hopelessness in which his people have been living.

When a small barn swallow in flight to the warm south ahead of the approaching winter stops to rest upon the statue the Happy Prince prevails upon him to delay his travels in order to remove his gold leaf a piece at a time and shower it upon the poor citizens.

Out of love for the Happy Prince the swallow does his bidding. As the days pass the Prince’s beauty is stripped away and as winter sets in the bird’s fate is sealed.

In the spring the townspeople finding only a dull statue with a broken lead heart and a dead bird consign the worthless objects to the ash heap. Only an emissary of God recognizes them as the most valuable treasures of the city and brings them to the gardens of heaven.

Frazetta Funny Stuff HC

Frazetta Funny Stuff HC
Frank Frazetta! He’s been rightfully called ‘The Grand Master of Fantasy Art’! But, it’s little known that Frazetta also conquered other worlds in the Golden Age of Comics, as shown in his Donald Duck-ish funny animal and hilarious hillbilly comic book stories.

Even those aware of this wonderful Frazetta art don’t know the extent–this book is a whopping 256 page, large-format pages! Did we mention ferocious, terrifying wolves and swampland creatures in the plethora of animal stories illustrations as only Frazetta could draw them?

There’s also lions and tigers and bears–oh my!–before Frazetta’s famous paintings captured the same subjects. But wait, there’s more! (As they say.) You’ll see the roots of the Frazetta Girl in the sexy Kathy teenage girl adventures. And there’s the hot Daisy Mae-look-alike, Clarabelle, in the hillbilly hi-jinks stories of her beau, Looey Lazybones (Holy Li’l Abner!).

The introduction is by the famed cartoon director Ralph Bakshi who well knew Frazetta and closely worked with him when they co-produced the animated feature film, ‘Fire and Ice.’ Bakshi shares rare insights, anecdotes, photos and Frazetta drawings.

And Bakshi has created a special painting of Frazetta and himself as funny animals for this beautiful hardcover full-color coffee table book! Frank Frazetta’s Funny Stuff is edited and designed by Eisner award-winner Craig Yoe.

Classic Heroes Doc Savage Statue

Classic Heroes Doc Savage Statue
He rights wrongs and punishes evildoers. Electric Tiki presents the eighteenth character in its ongoing tribute to Classic Heroes, Doc Savage!

Clark Savage, Jr., aka Doc Savage, first appeared in 1933 in the pages of Doc Savage magazine. Created by Henry W. Ralston and John L. Nanovic for Street and Smith publications, Doc Savage was created to capitalize on the success of another pulp hero, The Shadow. Writer Lester Dent was the first to fully flesh out the character, and artist James Bama gave the ‘Man of Bronze’ the classic appearance he is known for today.

Having been trained by a team of scientists from birth, Doc grew to almost superhuman abilities. Electric Tiki’s Doc Savage statue depicts the hero on an icy winter base, featuring the original ‘Fortress of Solitude.’

The translucent blue dome reveals a hidden hatch, featuring the Doc Savage logo. Standing 12″ tall, Doc Savage is sculpted by Rubén Procopio and Bryan Wynia.

Doctor Who: The Movie (Special Edition)

Doctor Who: The Movie (Special Edition)
Starring Paul McGann
Made to re-launch television’s most famous time traveler, Doctor Who: The Movie is an expensive feature-length episode which attempts to continue the classic series and work as a stand-alone film. Transporting the remains of the Master, Sylvester McCoy’s Seventh Doctor is diverted to San Francisco in 1999. Regenerating in the form of Paul McGann, the Doctor gains a new companion in heart surgeon Dr. Grace Holloway (Daphne Ashbrook) and must stop the Master from destroying the world. All of which might have been fine, had not the most eccentrically British of programs been almost entirely assimilated by the requirements of American network broadcasting. Matthew Jacobs’ screenplay is literally nonsense, dependent on arbitrary, unexplained events while introducing numerous elements that contradict established Doctor Who mythology. The Tardis is re-imagined as a bizarre pre-Raphaelite/Gothic folly, while the Doctor, now half-human, becomes romantically involved with his lady companion. From the West Coast setting to metallic CGI morphing, from the look of Eric Roberts as the Master to a motorcycle/truck freeway chase, director Geoffrey Sax borrows freely from James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). Doctor Who fans should feel relieved this travesty was not successful enough to lead to a series, though McGann himself does have the potential to make a fine Doctor. –Gary S Dalkin

Doctor Who: The Episode Guide (Pocket Essentials)

Doctor Who: The Episode Guide (Pocket Essentials)
Doctor Who has seen many ups and downs in its long and colorful history, and this guide tracks all of them. From humble beginnings in November 1963 to its cancellation in 1989 and eventual resurrection in 2005, Doctor Who has always been a quintessential element of sci-fi, and British popular culture. Over the years Doctor Who has embraced such diverse genres as science fiction, horror, westerns, history, romance, adventure, and comedy—but has never strayed from its first and most important remit: telling damn good stories. Eleven Doctors, a multitude of companions, and a veritable cornucopia of monsters and villains: the show has it all. This guide includes sections on TV, radio, cinema, stage, and internet spin-offs; novels and audio adventures; missing episodes; and an extensive website listing and bibliography.

Doctor Who: The Mutants

Doctor Who: The Mutants
Starring Jon Pertwee
Jon Pertwee’s Doctor is sent by the Time Lords to deliver a mysterious sealed container to an unknown recipient. So begins “The Mutants,” the penultimate adventure in the ninth series of Doctor Who (1972), a run that also included “The Sea Devils” and “The Day of the Daleks.” The Doctor and Jo (Katy Manning), find themselves on a space station belonging to Earth’s crumbling 30th-century empire, while below the planet Solos is on the verge of independence, a situation the corrupt Marshal (Paul Whitsun-Jones) is at pains to avert. What follows is a tale of opposing factions, assassination, genetic mutations, and running around in caves. The story concerns the aftermath of empire, a topic very relevant in the Britain of 1972, and the devastating environmental effects of industrial development (though with the ecology movement then gathering force, the following year’s “The Green Death” addressed similar topics far more effectively).

There are plenty of elements packed into “The Mutants,” yet the story feels padded and, the mutant costumes apart, is not helped by weak production values. Though far from a classic, this is still an entertaining Doctor Who adventure with Geoffrey Palmer in a small supporting role and a startling homage to the Monty Python “It’s” man. –Gary S. Dalkin

Doctor Who: Terror of the Autons

Doctor Who: Terror of the Autons
Starring Jon Pertwee
“I have come to destroy you Doctor, once and for all!” The Earth is in terrible danger! The Master is back with an evil scheme to destroy humanity and silence the Doctor forever. His plan: To awaken the awesome power of the Nestene-a ruthlessly aggressive alien life form. Once mixed with plastic, they will form into faceless automatons, a willing army of destruction easily controlled by the evil Time Lord himself. This is the terrible threat now facing the Earth-the terror of the Autons. Aided by the Brigadier and his enthusiastic new assistant, Jo Grant, only the Doctor can combat their evil power, but first he must defeat the Master… Originally transmitted in color January 2nd-23rd 1971, this four part adventure starring Jon Pertwee was lost in its original form. Only a black and white version and an edited color American NTSC standard version remained until now when technology worthy of the Doctor himself has reconciled the two, synchronising them into one full color version.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold - Season One, Part Two

Batman: The Brave and the Bold – Season One, Part Two
This second set in the Cartoon Network’s reboot of an animated Batman series continues the fun of part one in brilliant colors, dazzling if low-tech animated resolution, and dry-witted, square-jawed, super-fun superhero action. The series’ conceit is to team up the Dark Knight (not so dark in this incarnation) with another marquee crime fighter from the DC Comics stable. Aquaman, Green Arrow, Jonah Hex, Black Canary, Blue Beetle, Red Tornado, and a slew of other notable or obscure figures make guest appearances in each episode to help Batman outwit and/or out-brawn a supervillain who also may or may not be well known to Batman aficionados.

The tone is light and filled with humor and wisecracking between the rock ’em, sock ’em action sequences, with banter that may appeal as much to the older fanboy set as the young Saturday morning kiddie market. Each 22-or-so-minute episode (13 in all) keeps to its own character and story arc and moves briskly along with fast pacing and snappy banter.

Highlights include a team-up between Batman and Sherlock Holmes, and an encounter between Batman and Bat-Mite (voiced by Paul “Pee Wee Herman” Reubens) that is perhaps the most bizarre adventure of the bunch. But the standout is “Mayhem of the Music Meister,” an all-musical episode with the Music Meister played by none other than Neil Patrick Harris.

Fans of Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog know about Harris’s penchant for wacky side projects and his made-for-Broadway-show-tunes voice. They will particularly enjoy the thoughtful wit and playful sensibility that infuses this and most other installations of a popular Cartoon Network offering that deserves a good healthy run as a standout from most of the dreck that is 21st-century TV animation. –Ted Fry

”]Batman Beyond: Return of Joker [Blu-ray]
Some diehard Batfans have been slow to warm to the animated series Batman Beyond even though it was created by the same team responsible for the excellent Batman cartoon of the early ’90s. The Dark Knight should be a brooding avenger in a noir-nightmare Gotham City, the purists argue, not some smart-aleck teen four decades in the future, with jet packs, invisibility shields, and other sci-fi gizmos loaned him by an elderly Bruce Wayne (voiced, excellently as always, by Kevin Conroy, his stony bass given a raspy hint of old age), now confined to hobbling about on a cane and monitoring his protégé’s activities from the Batcave. Between its respectful reexamination of the “tortured hero” mythos and its sleek, anime-inspired look, this feature-length movie should go a long way toward quieting their complaints.
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that they’ve brought back the most legendary figure in the Rogues Gallery (voiced by Mark Hamill, deliciously deranged), but exactly how and why the Joker has managed to turn up 40 years after his last meeting with Batman still as youthful and diabolical as ever is explained not only logically but terrifyingly as well. The secret behind his arrival is perhaps the saddest, grimmest twist any purported “kids’ show” has dared to attempt.
(Parents may well want to preview this tape before screening it for the very young.)
Once again, Warner Brothers’ cartoon Batman has outshone all the live-action films, never allowing the thrilling action set pieces or flashes of wry humor to drown out the drama, even tragedy, of the all-too-human superheroes. –Bruce Reid

Batman Black & White Statue Joker By Lee Bermejo

Batman Black & White Statue Joker By Lee Bermejo

Animated Shorts of the DC Universe

Back in the day, when Bruce Timm and company were riding high on the success of the critically acclaimed Batman the Animated Series, they were planning to develop a new weekly animated series that would closely resemble the Showcase Presents anthology comics from their childhood. Teaming up an established hero with a relatively unknown or obscure character, the series would see the Question and other heroes debut in animated form. This concept was shelved as the Justice League cartoon went into production, but crept back in through the Justice League Unlimited model years later as the more popular members of the team made way for adventures that focused on Vigilante, the Question, Green Arrow and the Huntress. These episodes served to break up the over-arching storyline that was written through the entire series and involved the big seven heroes; Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, the Flash, Martian Manhunter and Hawkgirl. Everyone got what they wanted, it would seem.

More recently, the straight to DVD market has proven successful enough to include additional material, short 10-minute featurettes centering the action on relatively obscure heroes.

To be released on November 9th is an eagerly awaited collection of animated short films:

Green Arrow and Black Canary

“Green Arrow” by Greg Weisman; “The Spectre,” by Steve Niles; “Jonah Hex” by Joe Lansdale and a 22 minute-long special length short “Superman/Shazam! The Return of Black Adam.” While the first three shorts have already been released on Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths and Batman: Under the Red Hood and the Green Arrow short will be an extra on the upcoming Superman/Batman: Apocalypse DVD, the last short is unique for this collection.
Comic book fans love Batman and Superman, but there is a unique thrill at seeing third-tier creations such as Blue Beetle or the Creeper in animated form. At the recent San Diego Comic Con, it was revealed that the animation arm of DC Entertainment is interested in further developing these shorts and this collection is a surefire way to test the market to see if they can stand on their own.

Aquaman

Responding the relative lack of animated representation of Aquaman, the SDCC2010 panel could only confirm that the Aquaman family would be very present in the Young Justice animated series to debut this Fall on the Cartoon Network. Young Justice boasts a Justice League of America team 16 members strong, so chances are fan favorites will be in there somewhere!

Personally, I am waiting on an animated Aquaman film that shows similar dedication to the source material as the Green Lantern: First Flight and Wonder Woman animated projects. Apparently, such a film is not in production yet, but after the very vocal support at the San Diego Comic Con, that situation may have changed!

Alice in Sunderland

Alice in Sunderland
By Bryan Talbot

Sunderland! Thirteen hundred years ago it was the greatest center of learning in the whole of Christendom and the very cradle of English consciousness. In the time of Lewis Carroll it was the greatest shipbuilding port in the world. To this city that gave the world the electric light bulb, the stars and stripes, the millennium, the Liberty Ships and the greatest British dragon legend came Carroll in the years preceding his most famous book, Alice in Wonderland, and here are buried the roots of his surreal masterpiece. Enter the famous Edwardian palace of varieties, The Sunderland Empire, for a unique experience: an entertaining and epic meditation on myth, history and storytelling then decide for yourself-does Sunderland really exist? From Bryan Talbot, the acclaimed creator of The Adventures of Luther Arkwright and The Tale of One Bad Rat, comes Alice in Sunderland, a graphic novel unlike any before. Funny and poignant, thought-provoking and entertaining, traditional and experimental, whimsical and polemical, Alice in Sunderland is a heady cocktail of fact and fiction, a sumptuous and multi-layered journey that will leave you wondering about the magic that’s waiting to be unlocked in the place where you live.

“Alice in Sunderland is parochial in its focus-but not in content. I believe anyone interested in the way history is formed and, in itself, forms culture, character, and a sense of place will be entranced by it.”
-John Tufail, Carrollian scholar

Jonah Hex gets animated!

Pre-order Batman Under the Hood on DVD

The upcoming Batman Under the Hood will adapt the popular storyline by Judd Winnick that shook the foundations of the Batverse. While many devoted readers may remember that the Joker started his criminal career as the Red Hood before he fell into a vat of chemicals that forever altered more than just his complexion, the ‘new’ Red Hood is someone else entirely, but who? A vigilante clad in street clothes and a red mask that completely covers his face, the Red Hood is unleashing a distinctly brutal form of justice on the criminals of Gotham City, so fierce that both Batman and his rogue’s gallery are equally shocked and disturbed. But the dark knight detective must not only stop the Red Hood from spreading havoc and destruction in his city, he must also solve the mystery of who the strange character is. When Batman discovers what lies under the hood, he may find more than he was prepared for.

Jonah Hex by Frank Quitely

Joining the Batman animated film will be a short. The second in a series, DC Animation has crafted a unique feature that utilizes the vast array of creations at their disposal. For the Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths this involved the Spectre. For the Batman film, the western bounty hunter Jonah Hex will be getting the star treatment. Some viewers may recall Hex from his appearances in both Batman the Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited. They may also recall seeing a movie poster having something to do with a similar character, Megan Fox and horse-mounted gatlin guns (no idea what to make of that one). This animated short looks to be the real deal and comes courtesy of the master himself, Joe R. Lansdale.

A giant in the comic book and paperback fiction world, Lansdale is a master storyteller with a penchant for dialog and hard as nails characters. When he was tapped to write Jonah Hex: Two Gun Mojo and later Riders of the Worm and Such, fans of the scarred cowboy raised their glasses high. His writing style is both unique and distinctively humorous as is evident in the film Bubba Ho-Tep (based on his Bram Stoker Award-nominated novel) in which an aged Elvis Presley and John F Kennedy team up to fight an Egyptian mummy in a nursing home (if you have not seen this… get it now!).

Fans have already gotten a taste of what to expect from Joe from the Batman the Animated Series in the historic adventure ‘Showdown’ which he wrote back in the 90’s amongst many others including the excellent ‘Read My Lips’ with Scarface and ‘Perchance to Dream’ in which Bruce Wayne finds himself in a perfect world that allows him to lead a normal life free of Batman forever.

Jonah Hex has enjoyed a renewed influx of fans recently thanks to the outstanding series by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti which has given the character new life. I had discovered the new series soon after delving into the classic stories by John Albano and Michael Fleisher that forever changed my perception of genre comics. I heartily recommend both!

Desert Island Comics

There are lots of Top Ten lists out there regarding comics. I hate lists. I hate ‘favorites’ even more. I’m not being obnoxious, I just have difficulty listing things that I enjoy or worse yet giving them ranks. In an effort to play fair, I give you a list of comics I’d want to have on a desert island.

I’ve been in a superhero phase for the past couple of years (which anyone reading this blog can attest), so all of my choices are of that genre… sue me.

52

One of the most impressive comics in recent memory has to be the group effort that was the year-long weekly comic ’52.’ With Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka, Mark Waid and Keith Giffen working together on a tale that defined the DC Universe without Batman, Superman or Wonder Woman, this could be the most definitive work that the company has produced… and it fails to connect in any way to the monthly comics. A major snafu for sure, but readers of 52 entered the series as the DCU was in flux and expected to see the myriad storylines they had been following spill over to the other comics as 52 finished. Imagine their surprise when this did not happen. In some cases this would mark the series as a failure but in this case it is another sign of its genius.

Despite this, 52 remains a high watermark. Each issue was split between several stories; the Metal Men’s creator’s adventure on the island of mad scientists, Ralph Dibney’s quest to revive his deceased wife, Lex Luthor’s attempt to sell super powers, Booster Gold’s time travel story, the Question and Renee Montoya’s search for the truth – which become much more mystical, Bruce Wayne’s vision quest and the galactic adventure of Animal Man, Adam Strange and Starfire with a religious Lobo… this was simply the most wildly inventive a comic book publisher had ever been in decades. Collected in 4 trade paperbacks, it is well worth a look.

Jonah Hex

I came to Jonah Hex late in life. While most kids of my generation had read of the facially scarred bounty hunter at least once, I avoided him. Judging the genre as a waste of the comic book medium, I missed out on some of the best sequential stories out there.

Created by John Albano and Tony DeZuniga, Jonah Hex is a joy to read. Part of its charm is a lack of an insistence on continuity, something that comic fans love and hate. They love a story that spreads over the span of several issues but hate it when they miss an issue and are penalized for lack of knowledge. None of that gets in the way here as readers are treated to short stories told in the style of the pulp lavishly drawn by DeZuniga. The series was picked up in recent years by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti who have continued to uphold the great tradition of Jonah Hex tales.

DC Comics collected an assortment of black and white western reprints including Jonah Hex, but I also recommend the new series.

Sgt. Rock by Brian Bolland

Sgt. Rock

Alongside westerns I hated war comics as a kid. Imagine my surprise when I found that Sgt. Rock was one of the most exciting and engrossing reads that I had missed out on. Veteran comic creators Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert joined forces to tell it the way it was in WWII as seen through the eyes of the regular joes who fought in it. Each short story in Army at War stands on its own and never asks the reader to ever pick up another, but I wager that you’ll be hard pressed to stop once you start. These stories are so expertly told and full of characters written and drawn so well that they hold the reader in a kind of trance issue after issue.

DC Comics has collected Sgt. Rock in full color archive editions, but for the budget reader a couple of black and white Showcase Presents collections will suffice.

Spider-Man by Steve Ditko

Spider-Man by Steve Ditko

Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s Spider-Man

Perhaps the most important modern superhero comic book on the market, it doesn’t get much better than Spider-Man as created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The first 38 issues of Spider-Man tell an almost complete story. Awkward teenager Peter Parker obtains super powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider, something the reader is almost shocked to see does not enrich the youngsters life but instead complicates it. An array of colorful rogues all created by these two masterminds including Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Electro, the Lizard and the Sandman (just to name a few) battle our hero who is possessed of uncanny strength and agility yet he is such a neurotic mess that they are usually not the real problem as Peter Parker sees it. The adventure tales are enjoyable enough for inclusion in my desert island list, but the superb art is so imaginative and bizarre that it has matured like a fine wine over the years.

Many talented creators have tried to make their mark on Spider-Man, but in all honesty if nothing had been published after Ditko left… it would not have been the end of the world.

Jack Kirby's Kamandi

Jack Kirby's Kamandi

Jack Kirby’s Kamandi

After leaving Marvel Comics, Jack Kirby had decided to create a line of comics with rival publisher DC. Each of his springboards was just brilliant, but my personal favorite is Kamandi. Set in the far off future, Kamandi follows the adventures of the last boy on Earth. The planet has survived a cataclysmic event called ‘the Great Disaster’ and is now ruled by clans of warring animals. Lions, rats, cheetahs and even giant grasshoppers all clamber about a world strewn with the garbage left behind by the once proud race known as Mankind. Rumor has it that Kirby had intended the series to be spun off into a cartoon (and looking at his other creation Thundarr the Barbarian you can see that he never left any ideas idle), but it never worked out in his lifetime.

Animator Bruce Timm finally adapted Kirby’s future world in an episode of the Brave and the Bold, something that many Kirby fans are still shocked to see happen. Again a major part of this series’ appeal is that it can be picked up and put down at any time. Stories to pick up issue to issue but never in a way that demands you read each one in order.

Wally Wood's THUNDER Agents

Wally Wood's THUNDER Agents

Wally Wood’s Thunder Agents

I have written in part about this series before but it really is one of my big faves. Part super spy action book part superhero series, Thunder Agents just has it all. I had discovered Wally Wood first from his Wit’s End series published in Eclipse magazine, I later found an issue of Daredevil drawn by Wood that blew my socks off. His smooth line and sense of motion are a joy to behold!

I was overjoyed to find out about the Thunder Agents from a new attempt at the series published by Deluxe Comics. Digging back in the bins at several comic book conventions I eventually built a complete collection of the entire series (and even a couple of the spin-offs!). The characters are quirky, the action is bombastic and the talent is like a who’s who of 1960’s comics.

After DC Comics started working on reviving the series for the first time they reprinted the Thunder Agents in attractive (if expensive) archive editions. But I prefer the original printings.

The Doom Patrol

The Doom Patrol

Arnold Drake and Bruno Premiani’s Doom Patrol

Meeting Arnold Drake at a Boston Comic Con, I was tickled to see the old man giggle as he explained the difference between the Doom Patrol and any other superhero team, ‘They hate each other!’ Yes, the Fantastic Four has the rivalry of Ben and Johnny and the X-Men are hated and feared by those they have sworn to protect, but these guys really do hate each other. Why? Because they serve as reminders of how each one has nowhere else to go.

The members of the Doom Patrol are all survivors from one traumatic disaster or other, collected into some kind of commando group by their benefactor ‘the Chief.’ Former silver screen starlet Rita Farr is transformed by some weird gas into a size-stretching freak called Elasti Girl. Struck by strange unearthly radiation, brave test pilot Larry Trainor’s body has become a cage for the deadly menace known as Radioactive Man. Worst of all is dashing and handsome race car driver Cliff Steele whose entire body is burnt to a crisp. Only his brain survives, skillfully transplanted into a robot body by ‘The Chief.’ Known only as ‘Robot Man,’ Steele’s body is blasted, melted and rent asunder month after month by the most bizarre assortment of villains ever seen.

The comic can be read in parts but if you have any interest, you should stick with it to the end. As is most fitting, the series has the most unbelievable finale ever.

Fireside- Son of Origins of Marvel Comics

Fireside- Son of Origins of Marvel Comics

The Marvel Comics Fireside Collection

I’m cheating here but after noticing so many DC books in this list I figured I should level the playing field. Released in the mid-1970’s, these collections published by Fireside Books are perhaps the first attempt to bridge the gap between the newsstand and the book store. Each book is a selection of the most compelling Marvel Comics stories along with an introduction by Stan Lee that is sometimes informative and other times not so much. Remember, this is at a time when there was no internet to research these characters and there was also no series of cheap Essential books on the market to provide a quick back library of reference material.

Titles range from collections of stories featuring the best of Fantastic Four, Captain America, Spider-Man, Dr. Strange, an over-sized Hulk book and theme books focusing on the women of Marvel, super villains, superhero origins, team-ups and greatest battles. There’s even an original Silver Surfer story that retells his origin without the Fantastic Four! It’s a series of books some which have been reprinted but I recommend hunting down the first printings.

Seeing as how Marvel was embraced by the College set in the 60’s, this was probably an attempt to retain that demographic by printing up something that looked respectable on a guy’s mantle rather than a stack of wrinkled comics (kinda like today). Everyone wanted to look cool but somehow also keep up with Spider-Man.

Anyway… that is my desert island list of comics in no particular order. I’m sure that I’m missing a few (like Kirby and Simon’s Boy’s Ranch and Captain America comics… maybe something by Mike Allred and a good Eisner Spirit collection), but thankfully I don’t have to worry about packing for a doomsday event just yet.

What would make your list?
