Holiday gift ideas

Struck by the sudden realization that you are lacking gift ideas for your friends and family?

Here are some fine offerings for the fan of comic books, cult TV, sci-fi and outsider music in your life:

Wednesday Comics

Wednesday Comics by Various
The most amazing experiment ever undertaken in comics, these over-priced books were released once a week on newsprint. However, they featured some of the most amazing comic stories ever; Batman by Brian Azzarello and Ediardo Risso, Supergirl by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti, the Metal Men by Dan Didio and Jose Garcia Lopez, Sgt. Rock by Joe and Andy Kubert, Kamandi by Dave Gibbons and Ryan Sook, Hawkman by Kyle Baker, Metamorpho by Neil Gaiman and Mike Allred, Adam Strange by Paul Pope, Green Lantern by Kurt Bisiek and Joe Quinones, Superman by Joe Arcudi and Lee Bermejo, Demon and Catwoman by Walt Simonson and Brian Stelfreeze… and more!

The stories in Wednesday Comics were outside of continuity, so they were not restricted by the team line-up of the Justice League, who was Green Lantern of Earth or what version of Supergirl was flying around Metropolis. These were classic tales using the characters that fans love in fun adventures. To be honest, this is exactly the approach that I think DC Comics should use across the board and continuity be damned.

Wednesday Comics was perhaps a bit too over-ambitious at the time (and again, over-priced at $3.99 a pop), but it is a really impressive piece that most comic book fans missed out on for the reasons above. If there is a comic book fan on your list, consider picking this up for him or her, it’s a great prize.

Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978-1984

Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978-1984 by Simon Reynolds

Rip It Up and Start Again is the first book-length exploration of the wildly adventurous music created in the years after punk. Renowned music journalist Simon Reynolds celebrates the futurist spirit of such bands as Joy Division, Gang of Four, Talking Heads, and Devo, which resulted in endless innovations in music, lyrics, performance, and style and continued into the early eighties with the video-savvy synth- pop of groups such as Human League, Depeche Mode, and Soft Cell, whose success coincided with the rise of MTV. Full of insight and anecdote and populated by charismatic characters, Rip It Up re-creates the idealism, urgency, and excitement of one of the most important and challenging periods in the history of popular music.- description from Amazon.com

Comic Book Confidential

Comic Book Confidential by Ron Mann

From the early days of comic strips bundled together into a book for a dime to the post-modern days of the graphic novel, Comic Book Confidential is a superb documentary about funny books. A celebration of the medium from men in tights to R. Crumb, this film embraces all facets of comics and remains one of my all time favorite films about the industry.

”]
Godzilla (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]
The classic monster film to end all monster films, Godzilla is a masterpiece. Finally released as part of the Criterion Collection, this Blu-ray edition has all the bells and whistles including new documentaries, a cleaned up cut of King of the Monsters and new commentaries. A glorious addition to any collection.

MST3K Vs. Gamera: Mystery Science Theater 3000

MST3K Vs. Gamera: Mystery Science Theater 3000
For ages, the Gamera films were missing from the Rhino releases of MST3K due to Sandy Frank (distributor of the original editions) being unhappy with the cast’s blatant disrespect for him and the work as well. Being the barb of numerous songs about Frank flinging poop from trees and various other activities, I can see his point.

In any case, finally all of the Gamera films covered by MST3K can be purchased on one glorious edition complete with the original trailers and added documentaries. If you have a MSTie on your shopping list, get them this and watch them coo like a little baby.

The Adventures of Mark Twain

The Adventures of Mark Twain is an amazing journey of imagination, humour and heart, and a must for fans of Aardman Studios.

The film features a series of vignettes extracted from several of Mark Twain’s works, built around a plot that features Twain’s attempts to keep his “appointment” with Halley’s Comet. Tom Sawyer, Becky Thatcher, and Huck Finn stow away with Mark Twain on an incredible journey in Twain’s airship.

The journey introduces the three friends to a variety of the author s characters from; The Diary of Adam and Eve, Huckleberry Finn, The Mysterious Stranger, The Famous Jumping Frog of Caliverous County and Captain Stormfield s Visit to Heaven. The sequence based on The Mysterious Stranger reportedly received over ten million views upon being posted on YouTube. The sequence was allegedly banned from TV due to its ‘disturbing content’.

The Adventures of Mark Twain was the first full length feature film in the magic of claymation, directed by Will Vinton (best known for The California Raisins animation).- via Eureka

Doctor Who: The Talons of Weng-Chiang (Special Edition)

Doctor Who: The Talons of Weng-Chiang (Special Edition)
Starring Tom Baker

With the current popularity of Doctor Who, there are many who may hazily recall the program from their youth when it was shown on the local PBS station here in the ‘States and they may be interested in revisiting their history. There are even more who only know Doctor Who as ‘that show that David Tennant used to be on’ and they may be in need of some education.

There are several great Doctor Who DVD releases of the classic program that I could easily recommend, but Talons of Weng Chiang is one of the finest. A very slick and lavish production, it features a period setting, a marvelous villain, some outstanding supporting parts and a killer ventriloquil figure. It’s Phantom of the Opera meets Jack the Ripper, Sherlock Holmes and more. Tom Baker is in fine form as the eccentric alien who travels time and space righting wrongs and handing out sweets. Joined by the leggy Leela, the pair are iconic for my generation as representing a high note of Doctor Who on TV.

On the DVD, there are several added features including a marvelous program documenting the history of the series up to 1977 when Talons was being filmed. For anyone unclear on the rich legacy of Who, this is an essential purchase.

Classic Heroes Doc Savage Statue

Classic Heroes Doc Savage Statue
He rights wrongs and punishes evildoers. Electric Tiki presents the eighteenth character in its ongoing tribute to Classic Heroes, Doc Savage!

Clark Savage, Jr., aka Doc Savage, first appeared in 1933 in the pages of Doc Savage magazine. Created by Henry W. Ralston and John L. Nanovic for Street and Smith publications, Doc Savage was created to capitalize on the success of another pulp hero, The Shadow. Writer Lester Dent was the first to fully flesh out the character, and artist James Bama gave the ‘Man of Bronze’ the classic appearance he is known for today.

Having been trained by a team of scientists from birth, Doc grew to almost superhuman abilities. Electric Tiki’s Doc Savage statue depicts the hero on an icy winter base, featuring the original ‘Fortress of Solitude.’

The translucent blue dome reveals a hidden hatch, featuring the Doc Savage logo. Standing 12″ tall, Doc Savage is sculpted by Rubén Procopio and Bryan Wynia.

Doctor Who: The Mutants

Doctor Who: The Mutants
Starring Jon Pertwee
Jon Pertwee’s Doctor is sent by the Time Lords to deliver a mysterious sealed container to an unknown recipient. So begins “The Mutants,” the penultimate adventure in the ninth series of Doctor Who (1972), a run that also included “The Sea Devils” and “The Day of the Daleks.” The Doctor and Jo (Katy Manning), find themselves on a space station belonging to Earth’s crumbling 30th-century empire, while below the planet Solos is on the verge of independence, a situation the corrupt Marshal (Paul Whitsun-Jones) is at pains to avert. What follows is a tale of opposing factions, assassination, genetic mutations, and running around in caves. The story concerns the aftermath of empire, a topic very relevant in the Britain of 1972, and the devastating environmental effects of industrial development (though with the ecology movement then gathering force, the following year’s “The Green Death” addressed similar topics far more effectively).

There are plenty of elements packed into “The Mutants,” yet the story feels padded and, the mutant costumes apart, is not helped by weak production values. Though far from a classic, this is still an entertaining Doctor Who adventure with Geoffrey Palmer in a small supporting role and a startling homage to the Monty Python “It’s” man. –Gary S. Dalkin

Doctor Who: Terror of the Autons

Doctor Who: Terror of the Autons
Starring Jon Pertwee
“I have come to destroy you Doctor, once and for all!” The Earth is in terrible danger! The Master is back with an evil scheme to destroy humanity and silence the Doctor forever. His plan: To awaken the awesome power of the Nestene-a ruthlessly aggressive alien life form. Once mixed with plastic, they will form into faceless automatons, a willing army of destruction easily controlled by the evil Time Lord himself. This is the terrible threat now facing the Earth-the terror of the Autons. Aided by the Brigadier and his enthusiastic new assistant, Jo Grant, only the Doctor can combat their evil power, but first he must defeat the Master… Originally transmitted in color January 2nd-23rd 1971, this four part adventure starring Jon Pertwee was lost in its original form. Only a black and white version and an edited color American NTSC standard version remained until now when technology worthy of the Doctor himself has reconciled the two, synchronising them into one full color version.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold - Season One, Part Two

Batman: The Brave and the Bold – Season One, Part Two
This second set in the Cartoon Network’s reboot of an animated Batman series continues the fun of part one in brilliant colors, dazzling if low-tech animated resolution, and dry-witted, square-jawed, super-fun superhero action. The series’ conceit is to team up the Dark Knight (not so dark in this incarnation) with another marquee crime fighter from the DC Comics stable. Aquaman, Green Arrow, Jonah Hex, Black Canary, Blue Beetle, Red Tornado, and a slew of other notable or obscure figures make guest appearances in each episode to help Batman outwit and/or out-brawn a supervillain who also may or may not be well known to Batman aficionados.

The tone is light and filled with humor and wisecracking between the rock ’em, sock ’em action sequences, with banter that may appeal as much to the older fanboy set as the young Saturday morning kiddie market. Each 22-or-so-minute episode (13 in all) keeps to its own character and story arc and moves briskly along with fast pacing and snappy banter.

Highlights include a team-up between Batman and Sherlock Holmes, and an encounter between Batman and Bat-Mite (voiced by Paul “Pee Wee Herman” Reubens) that is perhaps the most bizarre adventure of the bunch. But the standout is “Mayhem of the Music Meister,” an all-musical episode with the Music Meister played by none other than Neil Patrick Harris.

Fans of Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog know about Harris’s penchant for wacky side projects and his made-for-Broadway-show-tunes voice. They will particularly enjoy the thoughtful wit and playful sensibility that infuses this and most other installations of a popular Cartoon Network offering that deserves a good healthy run as a standout from most of the dreck that is 21st-century TV animation. –Ted Fry

”]Batman Beyond: Return of Joker [Blu-ray]
Some diehard Batfans have been slow to warm to the animated series Batman Beyond even though it was created by the same team responsible for the excellent Batman cartoon of the early ’90s. The Dark Knight should be a brooding avenger in a noir-nightmare Gotham City, the purists argue, not some smart-aleck teen four decades in the future, with jet packs, invisibility shields, and other sci-fi gizmos loaned him by an elderly Bruce Wayne (voiced, excellently as always, by Kevin Conroy, his stony bass given a raspy hint of old age), now confined to hobbling about on a cane and monitoring his protégé’s activities from the Batcave. Between its respectful reexamination of the “tortured hero” mythos and its sleek, anime-inspired look, this feature-length movie should go a long way toward quieting their complaints.
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that they’ve brought back the most legendary figure in the Rogues Gallery (voiced by Mark Hamill, deliciously deranged), but exactly how and why the Joker has managed to turn up 40 years after his last meeting with Batman still as youthful and diabolical as ever is explained not only logically but terrifyingly as well. The secret behind his arrival is perhaps the saddest, grimmest twist any purported “kids’ show” has dared to attempt.
(Parents may well want to preview this tape before screening it for the very young.)
Once again, Warner Brothers’ cartoon Batman has outshone all the live-action films, never allowing the thrilling action set pieces or flashes of wry humor to drown out the drama, even tragedy, of the all-too-human superheroes. –Bruce Reid

A Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series, 2d ed.

A Critical History and Filmography of Toho’s Godzilla Series, 2d ed.
Like Godzilla trashing Tokyo, U.S. critics have stomped all over Toho Studio’s venerable series of monster films. Kalat’s project is consequently a rehabilitation. A writer and independent filmmaker, Kalat questions cultural biases and supplies a welter of information in the form of complete synopses and credits for the 23 Godzilla features, impressive production notes, and analyses of sociopolitical subtexts. Although his analyses lack academic rigor, his scholarship is commendable in its harnessing of details from both sides of the Pacific. The author draws upon film industry publications, the mainstream press, and fanzines to rectify the mainstream’s poor critical treatment of Godzilla. Among other things, he reveals that most of the films were scored by Akira Ifukube, Japan’s distinguished classical composer, and that many of them share personnel associated with Akira Kurosawa. Sure to please Godzilla fans, Kalat’s work will also interest scholars pursuing Japanese cultural studies.?Neal Baker, Dickinson Coll. Lib., Carlisle, Pa.

Gojira (1954)

A series of atomic explosion awakens a horror that challenges the senses. A creature unlike anything seen before launches an attack on downtown Tokyo, leaving humanity powerless in its wrathful violence.

A monster movie of mythic proportions, I was not prepared for the grandeur of this film. I am much more familiar with the campy later films in what became a franchise, hence my surprise at finding myself faced with what I soon realized was a moving and powerful film. Growing up in suburbia, my exposure to the Godzilla film series came through snippets glimpsed on TV during the WLVI Channel 56 Creature Double Feature, which is just what it sounds like; a double shot of monster movies on a UHF channel. In these movies, guys in rubber suits wrestled over model cities while helpless locals milled about and model tanks were hurled like… well, model tanks.

I admit that aside from the MST3K covers of a few choice selections, my memory of Godzilla is very limited. This isn’t that surprising as I was more of a child of the Star Wars/Star Blazers generation that followed the Godzilla/Kung Fu generation. In any case, the 1954 film is so very poignant and evocative that I found myself shocked that it included the rubber suited monster at all. The cinematography is wonderful and the black & white images create an air of mystery and fantasy around the monster during the raiding sequences in which Godzilla takes on a ethereal quality, appearing to be something from a half-remembered dream.

The plot is rather straight-forward and revolves around a series of mysterious attacks on fishing boats that are crippling Japan’s business. Several investigative teams are sent to discover the cause of these attacks only to disappear just as mysteriously. Talk amongst the elder fishermen around an ancient horror story involving the angry god (Gojira or Godzilla as he is known today) of the sea scares the locals, but its not until a Dr. Yamane proves its existence that the impossible becomes reality. An ancient and gigantic beast, safely living in isolation since before the dawn of mankind has returned.

Godzilla’s revival and subsequent attacks on Tokyo, which no one can stop, are strikingly reminiscent of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Even someone who fails to make the connection would be driven to hopelessness and sorrow at the devastation. The people at large are unsure of what to do and the military is determined to find a way to destroy the monster, much to the disappointment of the scientist who has theorized the beast’s origins, who feels that it is a precious relic of a forgotten age and has a right to live.

The introduction of a love triangle seems straight out of nowhere, but we are given a few details regarding Dr. Yamane’s daughter Emiko having promised herself to a childhood friend and fellow brilliant scientist, Serizawa. However, Emiko has fallen in love with the dashing Ogata and decided that given the state of emergency, it’s the ideal time to call it off and move on. Imagine her surprise when her fiancée shows her his horrific invention and makes her swear to secrecy of it’s existence. It is not until all attacks on the monster have failed and Dr. Yamane is split in his interest to protect the monster despite the death toll it is responsible for that Emiko breaks down and reveals what Serizawa has done. It’s very clever and a wonderful narrative twist.

Serizawa has been engaged in research of oxygen and its molecular structure. In the course of his research he has found a way to dissolve the molecular bond, causing death to any and all sea life. To a culture that depends on the fishing industry, this is massive. Understandably, Serizawa wishes the invention to remain a secret for fear that he would have introduced something more terrifying than the hydrogen bomb. Through an awkward confrontation, Serizawa is convinced that he has to use his invention against Godzilla. Both Serizawa and Ogata descend into Tokyo bay with the device in a beautifully atmospheric sequence. The pair of divers watch in stunned silence as Godzilla is seen walking along the ocean floor, wraith-like in its silent gait. Ogata sacrifices himself by remaining in the water while his device is activated to save both humanity from his knowledge being made public and Emiko and Ogata who can be married now that he’s out of the way. As the oxygen-killing weapon is activated, Godzilla’s body deteriorates, leaving only a massive skeleton behind.

In 1956, the movie was re-cut, including Raymond Burr of TV fame as an American reporter to give the English-speaking audience some kind of familiar face to connect to. Godzilla, King of Monsters, remains a cult phenomenon today.

In case my trip down memory lane sounded too obscure, here’s a glimpse of the Creature Double Feature TV Promo from back in the day (fellow north-easterners may want to have a hankie handy or get ready to feel very old).

In the 1970’s, Godzilla films were shown on late night TV and in cinemas to a growing fan base. Looking to capitalize on this phenomenon, Marvel Comics released a Godzilla monthly comic book. Featuring a division of S.H.I.E.L.D. specially created to deal with the giant lizard’s threat, the series is pretty goofy but delivers in what it promises, month-to-month devastation in the mighty Marve manner. Set firmly in the Marvel Universe (Godzilla even fights the west coast team the Champions!), the book was the result of a very limited legal use of the character, resulting in any subsequent appearances being unlikely (though Godzilla-like monsters have appeared since). Doug Moench and Hulk comic book legend Herb Trimpe gave the kids at the time a real treat that worked in concert with the Shogun Warriors title also on the stands at the time.

The imagery of Gojira is remarkably powerful and not at all of the campy variety that I found in the sequels that followed in the 1960’s and 70’s. This was an intelligent and emotional film that knew what it was doing. I’m not trying to educate anyone on the movie’s importance as there are better authorities for that task. But I am overcome with admiration for one of the most important horror films of the 20th Century.

Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters: Defending the Earth with Ultraman and Godzilla

Essential Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Ultraman, monster fighter beyond compare

With all of the monsters constantly attacking Japan, something had to be done. Created in 1966 by Eiji Tsuburaya, the father of Godzilla, the answer to the monster problem finally arrived in the form of Ultraman. A powerful vision in red and silver, Ultraman gave the kaiju of Japan a reason to be afraid.

Ultraman_AlexRoss

Ultraman by Alex Ross

The initial TV series if Ultraman underwent several revisions. A sci-fi series similar in some ways to U.N.I.T. from Doctor Who whereby the Earth was protected from the regular attacks of bizarre aliens by an even weirder jump-suited force. Set in the distant future, a well-armed planet-wide defense known as Science Special Search Party utilizes the most advanced arsenal of weapons and vehicles known to mankind. One key member of the global organization called the Space Patrol, Hayata, is abducted by aliens and granted the unlikely ability to grow into fantastic size, thus leveling the playing field against the race of skyscraper-sized monsters.

While Utlraman easily has the most diverse and amazing list of super abilities ranging from super speed to telekinesis to a kind of supreme super soaker ray, he primarily relies on his fighting fists. As Ultraman, Hyata primarily utilizes wrestler-style moves and the occasionally inexplicable blast of energy from a special positioning of his arms. Hyata has a limited but vague amount of time in which to defeat the alien threat, the limit of which is signaled by a flashing light on his chest. However, it’s not fair to really discuss Hyata and Ultraman as if they were one persona as they swap places in much the same way the Captain Marvel and Billy Batson do. While Ultraman is fighting a giant alien monster, Hyata is in some strange limbo.

The program also has some of the trippiest visuals this side of a Doctor Who episode, the least mind-blowing of which is the opening (dubbed in English for this instance).

Syndicated in the US in the late 1960’s on various UHF channels, Ultraman gained a very devoted following in much the same way that Godzilla had before and Starblazers would later on. After 39 episodes, it was thought that Ultraman was gone forever. After sacrificing himself so that his human host Hyata may live, Ultraman disappeared from TV screens. Many a young lad at the time shed a tear for Ultraman who asked for nothing but gave so much. If anyone really thought he was gone forever, boy were they wrong.

Several animated, live action and feature film adaptations followed up to the current day. In fact, Ultraman is the bearer of the Guinness World Record for spin-offs. He also had his imitators, most notably Jet Jaguar from Godzilla vs. Megalon, there is only one Ultraman. A mega star of film, animation, and TV, it should come as no surprise that Ultraman also conquered the video game world.

Sure, each Ultraman adventure is essentially sweaty guys in rubber suits beating each other up over a model city, but it’s also so innocent in its execution that you can’t help but find it charming and somehow… iconic. After seeing cities getting trampled to powder every week and the future of humanity hanging on a thread protected only by Ultraman… you kinda have a spiritual awakening.

Either that or I have to stop drinking Chimay while watching these things.

Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters

Behind-the-scenes hero to anyone who’s thrilled by giant monsters duking it out over Tokyo, Eiji Tsuburaya was the visual effects mastermind behind Godzilla, Ultraman, and numerous Japanese science fiction movies and TV shows beloved around the world. The first book on this legendary film figure in English, this highly visual biography details his fascinating life and career, featuring hundreds of film stills, posters, concept art, and delightful on-set photos of Tsuburaya prompting monsters to crush landmark buildings. A must-have for fans, this towering tribute also features profiles of Tsuburaya’s film collaborators, details on his key films and shows (most available on DVD), and features on the enduring popularity of the characters he helped create.

This fantastic book offers insight to the world of sweaty guys in rubber suits we call monster movies. From the first time we heard that weird trumpet blast from the Lizard King, many if us became Japanese Monster Movie Maniacs, while others just think they’re silly. Nevertheless, they hold a certain mystique that is still hypnotic to this day.
