With the inclusion of the clone troopers in Attack of the Clones, the Star Wars universe became a lot more crowded suddenly. On screen, there wasn’t much space to develop the clone army, but in animation, the characters have become incredibly successful with viewers.
I have pointed out in a few of my previous reviews that it is quite odd for Lucas and company to flesh out these characters who becomes cold-blooded killers after Order 66 is given and they turn on their Jedi commanders. I appreciate the depth that the Clone Wars series has given these characters, but it becomes half of a sophisticated statement when the opposition is presented as frothing big creatures or goofy robots. Whatever the case, the clone troopers have been the real stars of the Cartoon Network animated series. As the program enters its fourth season, they will be continue to take center stage… but I gotta wonder what it will be like when the animated universe concludes and the troopers that viewers have become so attached to become faceless storm troopers.
Dee Bradley recently conducted an interview on voicing the clone army and it’s an interesting piece. Just the thing to get you excited about tomorrow night’s two hour premiere.
I have to echo Bradley’s statement that Star Wars is all about innovation. It was the work of ILM back in the day that attracted me to special effects and the incredible week-to-week progression in animation and storytelling that makes Clone Wars a continuation of that innovative spirit.
