BATMAN_Robin_1966The caped crusader has been fighting crime for over 75 years. However, one of the most iconic and familiar iterations of Batman is still the 1966-68 TV series starring Adam West and Burt Ward as the dynamic duo. The two will reunite (providing the voices for a new animated film) in 2016.

batman-adam-westAdam West and Burt Ward are suiting up as Batman and Robin one more time, according to a report over on Consequence of Sound. The former dynamic duo revealed during the Mad Monster Party horror convention in Charlotte, North Carolina that they will be involved in a new animated Batman feature film created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the iconic “Batman ’66” TV show.

“I don’t know, our agents are here, whether we can about the new Batman movie,” said Ward during the Batman panel before being interrupted by West.

“Yes we can,” interjected West. “I tell them what to do.”

Ward continued, telling the audience that they can “look forward to a new animated Batman full-length 90-minute feature coming out on the 50th anniversary — one of possibly two, but for sure one that Adam and I are going to be doing the voices for.”

The Man of Steel versus Brainiac in Superman: Unbound!

The cold-blooded evil genius Brainiac has plagued Superman since 1958. Starting as a strange green-skinned alien who used mind-wrestling technology to shrink cities for his collection, he eventually gained the the acclaim of being one of Superman’s most deadly villains. In later years, Brainiac shed his organic shell and re-appeared as a startling robotic body housing a crystalline brain.

Action280_Brainiac_Superman

Physically powerful, ruthlessly cunning and an outsider much like Superman himself, Brainiac was a very successful foe for the Metropolis marvel. He almost made an appearance in Superman III, but the rights were withdrawn, prompting a strange computerized antagonist. Rumor had it that Brainiac would have faced the Brandon Routh Superman in the planned sequel, but again it was not to be.

Finally, Brainiac is the showcase threat in Superman: Unbound, adapting the fan favorite story line by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank.

SUPERMAN: UNBOUND, the next entry in the popular series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies, arrives May 7, 2013 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment as a Blu-ray™ Combo Pack, DVD, On Demand and for Digital Download.

Based on the Geoff Johns/Gary Frank 2008 release “Superman: Brainiac,” SUPERMAN: UNBOUND finds the Man of Steel aptly handling day-to-day crime while helping acclimate Supergirl to Earth’s customs and managing Lois Lane’s expectations for their relationship. Personal
issues take a back seat when the horrific force responsible for the destruction of Krypton – Brainiac – begins his descent upon Earth.
Brainiac has crossed the universe, collecting cities from interesting planets – including Supergirl’s home city of Kandor – and now the
all-knowing, ever-improving android has his sights fixed on Metropolis. Superman must summon all of his physical and intellectual
resources to protect his city, the love of his life and his newly-arrived cousin.

Thor 1/4 Scale Statue
In the cold wastes of Scandinavia, the Vikings lead a hard and ferocious life in a harsh land, and their gods they worshipped matched their ferocity. Among the gods they worshipped was Thor, a hammer-wielding god who commanded the thunder and lightning and served as humanity’s protector and a sign of virility. ARH Studios casts this thunder god as a 1/4-scale statue that stands 30″ tall. Wearing the rugged clothing of the Norsemen, his hammer is held high and his long red hair flows majestically.

Eliza Dushku fits purr-fectly as Catwoman in “Batman: Year One”

Official press release below:

Eliza Dushku has taken command of Catwoman and she’s not about to give her back.

The star of Dollhouse and Tru Calling, and a vital part of the amazing Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast, provided the voice of Selina Kyle/Catwoman for Batman: Year One, the next entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies. A few short months later, Dushku was quick to accept a return to the role as the title character of the DC Showcase animated short Catwoman.

From the moment she accepted the role, Dushku was keen on making this character her own – and coming back to play the character as often as possible. Given her performance, it’s doubtful casting director Adnrea Romano and executive producer Bruce Timm would look elsewhere the next time the sometimes vigilante, sometimes villain appears in a script.

Timm and Romano will be at New York Comic Con on Friday, October 14 to present the world premiere of the Catwoman animated short and to discuss Batman: Year One during a panel from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the IGN Theater.

Produced by Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation, the all-new, PG-13 rated Batman: Year One arrives October 18, 2011 from Warner Home Video as a Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD, On Demand and for Download. Batman: Year One is also now available in a special download-for-purchase early window through iTunes, Xbox Live, Zune, VUDU HD Movies and Video Unlimited on the PlayStation Network & Sony Entertainment Network.

Following her initial recording session, Dushku was happy to download some of her thoughts regarding a number of subjects related to Catwoman, the Batman legacy, felines, bad girls and comic books. And here’s what she had to say …

QUESTION:
You seemed to easily groove into this character. Where did you go to discover who Selina Kyle is?

ELIZA DUSHKU:
I found the attitude for this character deep down in the Eliza Dushku archive of bad girls (she laughs). They’re in there somehow, somewhere for some reason, and I tap into them when I need them. They’re characters with an edge. I grew up with three older brothers in Boston, and my mother was a single mom. So I spent my early years running the streets with the boys. After I fell into the film and television business, I went back to public school in Boston, and kids didn’t think it was that cool. So I had to kind of fight for my street cred. I adopted this really sort-of-hard exterior, and got in a couple fights. So by the time I graduated high school and came out to make Buffy The Vampire Slayer, it was really art imitating life. I was fighting for my life.

QUESTION:
Does being part of the Batman mythology have any special significance to you?

ELIZA DUSHKU:
It’s incredible being part of the Batman legacy. It’s iconic. It’s Batman. I grew up with brothers and we would play Batman and Robin. Well, I would always try to get in and play, but usually they would let me join the game as some character or another, and they would immediately kill me off (laughs). So, I used to watch from afar. So now look brothers – I get to be a part of this and you don’t. (laughs hard)

QUESTION:
Do you have a pet cat? How do you feel about cats?

ELIZA DUSHKU:
I had hobo cats growing up. We had cats that would climb up on the roof of the house. We would get them off the roof, then two nights later they would be meowing on the top of the roof again. They have little attitudes, too. I ended up with dogs, mainly, but if a cat could act like a dog and could play like a dog and can play rough, then those cats got along with me. I just don’t want house cats or Siamese cats – they’re a little too snooty for me.

QUESTION:
Did you enjoy attempting to bring a comic book to animated life?

ELIZA DUSHKU:
I love that in the DC Comics world, the stakes are high from the get-go. A week ago, I was watching The Dark Knight. I love what they did, but it’s different from what we did for Batman: Year One and Catwoman. When you’re recreating comics, there’s different intonations and character strengths that come out. That’s what I was focused on bringing forth. It’s a little exaggerated, a little nuanced, a little more dramatic. But it’s also full of layers and seething with this very cool energy.

QUESTION:
Do you enjoy voice acting?

ELIZA DUSHKU:
I’ve had a great time doing voiceovers. It started with videogames – the first was a Buffy The Vampire Slayer videogame – and really I did it because I thought it would be cool to have my nephews be able to play me on their videogames. They won’t talk to me right now – they’re at that stage of being a teenager – so I thought maybe we could have a connection through the videogames. I did a videogame called Wet last year that was a lot of fun. Then I have some friends over at Family Guy. And then, more and more, I’ve been sort of reaching out and peeking around to see what things are available to build my voiceover resume. It’s fun for me, and completely different from what we do in live action. Voice acting is really invigorating. It still feels like you have to bring the same amount of character and energy into the room. And then to watch it morph into the animated version is really kind of magnificent.

QUESTION:
Was there anything you wanted to personally add to the character that made the experience of voicing Catwoman that much more fun?

ELIZA DUSHKU:
Well, I wanted to purr, and they let me purr – so that was really like getting a bit of extra credit. I wanted to get in there and really emphasize her relationship with her cats, as I think it’s very feral and very significant. And everyone was really cool about letting me play around with my ferocity.

QUESTION:
What is it you enjoy most about working in this genre?

ELIZA DUSHKU:
I love my fanboys. Without my fanboys, so many of the projects that I’ve done wouldn’t have had the extraordinary life that they’ve enjoyed. The fanboys have been there with enthusiasm and the support, and their loyalty and their love has made this so rewarding and exciting. It makes me just want to give them more, more, more, more.

QUESTION:
The Whedonverse has provided many actors for the first 16 DC Universe Animated Original Movies. What do you think makes Joss Whedon’s casts fit so nicely in the DC Universe?

ELIZA DUSHKU:

Joss is such a die-hard comic book fan himself that there’s a natural connection. And when you play in his worlds – worlds that are fantasy-related with all this metaphorical, deep magic going on, it sort of preps you to think the unthinkable and go places with your character that most projects don’t give you the opportunity to do.

QUESTION:
Your parents are educators. Did comic books fit into place as literature in your house?

ELIZA DUSHKU:
My father was actually a fourth grade elementary school teacher, so we had a lot of fun with dad growing up as far as comic books and trading baseball cards. That was actually one of the things that my brothers and my father and I did together – play with action figures and Star Wars and G.I. Joes and Transformers, and trade and read comic books and baseball cards. My dad actually worked at and had a baseball card shop for a while, and he had comics in there. So comic books were definitely a huge part of my childhood.

The Dark Knight faces off against the Gotham City Police in Batman: Year One

Shrewd and cunning. A powerful fighter. The best detective the world has ever seen.

The very best.

But at what price?

Official press release:

Warner Home Video will present a DC Universe Animated Original Movie panel at New York Comic Con on Friday, October 14. Among those participating are executive producer Bruce Timm, dialogue/casting director Andrea Romano and the perennial choice of Batman, Kevin Conroy. Batman: Year One is based on the landmark 1987 DC Comics titles from 12-time Eisner Award winner Frank Miller and illustrator David Mazzucchelli. The film depicts young Bruce Wayne’s return to Gotham City in his first attempts to fight injustice as a costumed vigilante. The playboy billionaire chooses the guise of a giant bat to combat crime, creates an early bond with a young Lieutenant James Gordon (who is already battling corruption from inside the police department), inadvertently plays a role in the birth of Catwoman, and helps to bring down a crooked political system that infests Gotham.

Primetime television stars Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Ben McKenzie (Southland, The O.C.), Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) provide the core voices for Batman: Year One. Three-time Emmy® Award winner Cranston gives voice to young Jim Gordon, while McKenzie makes his animated voiceover debut as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Fanboy favorites Dushku and Sackhoff fill the roles of Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Detective Sarah Essen, respectively. Alex Rocco (The Godfather) is the voice of crime lord Carmine Falcone.

Animation master Bruce Timm is executive producer of Batman: Year One. Directors are Lauren Montgomery (Superman/Batman: Apocalypse) and Sam Liu (All-Star Superman) from a script penned by Academy Award® nominee Tab Murphy (Gorillas in the Mist, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse).

Superman and Green Lantern cast in Justice League: Doom animated movie

Official press release below:

Primetime Television Stars Nathan Fillion & Tim Daly join heroic cast of Justice League: Doom

Warner Home Video to distribute DC Universe Animated Original Movie in early 2012; Eight Justice League TV series alums featured in voice cast

Primetime television stars Nathan Fillion and Tim Daly, the reigning voices of Green Lantern and Superman, respectively, join an exciting group of actors reprising their famed cartoon roles in Justice League: Doom, an all-new entry in the popular series of DC Universe Animated Original Movies due in early 2012 from Warner Home Video.

Justice League: Doom finds Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Cyborg and Batman on their heels when a team of super villains discover and implement the Dark Knight’s “contingency plans” for stopping any rogue Justice League member. The story is inspired by Mark Waid’s much-heralded “JLA: Tower of Babel.”

Superman in Justice League: Doom

Fillion, the star of ABC’s hit TV drama Castle, made his debut as Green Lantern/Hal Jordan in the recent Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. Fillion made his initial DCU bow as the voice of Steve Trevor in the 2008 hit Wonder Woman.

Currently headlining the cast of ABC’s popular Private Practice, Daly originated the title character’s voice in the landmark cartoon, Superman: The Animated Series. He has reprised the role in two DCU films: the 2009 extravaganza Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and the 2010 thriller Superman/Batman: Apocalypse.

In addition to current primetime stars Fillion and Daly, the cast is a grand reunion of the original group of actors who provided the voices of the Justice League for the cartoon of the same name and its follow-up, Justice League Unlimited. Reprising their roles are Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series) as Batman, Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville, Breaking In) as Flash, Susan Eisenberg (Superman/Batman: Apocalypse) as Wonder Woman and Carl Lumbly (Alias) as J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter. Bumper Robinson (A Different World, Transformers: Animated) joins the cast as Cyborg.

The Justice League faces two sets of villainous teams in the film – The Royal Flush Gang and a sextet of notable evildoers. The latter group includes three voice acting alumni of the Justice League animated series: Phil Morris (Smallville, Seinfeld) as Vandal Savage, Olivia d’Abo (The Wonder Years) as Star Sapphire, and Alexis Denisof (Angel) as Mirror Master. Also opposing our heroes are Carlos Alazraqui (Reno 911) as Bane, Paul Blackthorne (The Dresden Files) as Metallo, and Claudia Black (Farscape, Stargate SG-1) as Cheetah.

David Kaufman (Danny Phantom) also reprises his Justice League role of Jimmy Olsen.

Green Lantern in Justice League: Doom

The film is executive produced by Bruce Timm (Batman: Year One), and directed by Lauren Montgomery (Batman: Year One), who is also credited as producer alongside Alan Burnett (Batman: The Animated Series). Justice League: Doom is the final script from the late Dwayne McDuffie (All-Star Superman, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths). Casting and dialogue direction is once again in the capable hands of Andrea Romano (Batman: Year One, SpongeBob SquarePants).

Warner Home Video will premiere the Justice League: Doom trailer during its presentation at New York Comic Con on Friday, October 14 from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in the IGN Theater. Also premiering during that session will be the Catwoman animated short that is attached to Batman: Year One, the next DC Universe Animated Movie (streeting October 18).

Is an All Star Superman sequel in the works?

The cult comic book writer Grant Morrison gained new followers with his critically acclaimed All Star Superman series in 2005. An homage to the Silver Age Superman comics from the early 1960’s, the comic also featured the stylish artwork of Frank Quitely (of New X-Men fame).

The animated version of Morrison’s series is released this week, but already Morrison is thinking of a follow up.

Via DigitalSpy

Buy Absolute All Star SupermanGrant Morrison has discussed the possibility of future All Star Superman stories.

The Batman Inc writer told CBR that the conclusion of his acclaimed Superman limited series could naturally run into a ‘Son of Superman’ sequel.

“Superman is a great character, and Superman, honestly, I could write for that character eternally,” said Morrison. “So, yeah, given the chance I’d love to do those stories one day.

“There’s a whole bunch of them. I keep coming up with new ones, that’s the problem. A new Superman story just comes up. Part of one of the things I wanted to do with the whole ‘Son of Superman’ thing was to take that whole thing with the old ‘Super Sons’ stories and update that, make it modern and have the son of Superman and Batman.

“The first page would be Superman and Batman shaking hands and saying, ‘Congratulations old friend. We’ve stopped all crime.’ One day, I might get to them, or some version of it.

“There’s a little bit of that in the Multiversity series that I’m doing. Some of these stories always come back in some form. But yeah, I’m getting close, within a couple years, of wrapping up Batman. So, the notion of doing some more Superman stuff is becoming quite interesting again.”

Multiversity is the long-awaited follow-up to Morrison’s Final Crisis.

Warner Bros’ animated adaptation of All Star Superman goes on sale this week in the US.

Young Justice- Independence Day review

There’s a new DC animated series, Young Justice.

A fusion of Justice League and Teen Titans along with several comic book stories, the series premiered on the Cartoon Network with a one hour adventure, Independence Day this past week.

The two-part premiere introduces viewers to characters that are very familiar; Robin, Kid Flash, Speedy and Aqualad – the sidekicks to Batman, the Flash, Green Arrow and Aquaman. Throughout standard sequences against ice-themed villains, the pairings of mentor and sidekick convene for a special event, the inclusion of the teenagers into the Justice League… or so the teens expected. Instead, the Justice League have arranged for access to the JLA’s services and facilities, a move that offends Speedy who storms out after ranting about how he demands to be viewed as more than a sidekick. When the JLA receive what appears to be reports of a fire at Cadmus Labs and a deep-space threat, the team decides to let the civilian fire fighters deal with Cadmus while they transport themselves to the Justice League’s satellite HQ circling the planet.

Robin, Aqualad and Kid Flash are left to ruminate on Speedy’s tirade and decide to investigate Cadmus Labs, a facility that Batman remarked has caught his interest. The result is an adventure into the depths of a top secret research facility involved in several projects that could threaten the planet, overseen by a cryptic overlord called ‘The Light.’

The Teen Titans comic book series has had several iterations over the years including the manga-influenced cartoon that brought the team to a new audience. The new version is action/adventure-oriented and written to a more sophisticated audience, much like the Batman, Superman and Justice League cartoons that preceded it. The DC Animated DVD features have obviously influenced the Young Justice cartoon series, with action sequences that have been progressively more elaborate and innovative character designs.

One slight speed-bump is that this is yet another version of characters that have been seen in many versions both in comics and in animation… and this is yet another version. For instance, this is not the Robin from the Batman animated series, The Batman cartoon, Batman: Brave and the Bold or Teen Titans. It’s meant to be Dick Grayson, though he is more like the third version of Robin – Tim Drake than the first Robin.  Wally West, a character who has been Flash on the Justice League cartoon is Kid Flash in the Young Justice cartoon even though the teen speedster of the Young Justice comic book was Impulse, a teen from the future. If you think about it too much, you’ll just get dizzy, but if you accept what you are given in the Young Justice cartoon, it all works fine.

Independence Day takes nods to several sources from the Teen Titans series by Geoff Johns and Jack Kirby’s Jimmy Olsen comics (the Guardian and Cadmus’ gene-gnomes project), making it a mixture of great ideas. Thus story has been told several times over in various ways, so it takes a lot to make viewers invested in yet another version of the Justice League and Teen Titans. This one accomplishes that task so well it makes it look easy.

Set on Earth 16, this series is another version of the DC Universe that we have seen in the comics, animated films and on TV. Set shortly after superheroes have emerged on the planet, the cast of characters is a mixture of the classic and new; Robin (Dick Grayson), Kid Flash (Wally West), Speedy, Aqualad (a new character), Artemis (a mystery character) and Miss Martian. Aqualad (real name: Kaldur’ahm) is the team leader, a deviation from the norm which has traditionally favored Robin as the leader of the Teen Titans. Aqualad is also the son of longtime Aqualad supervillain Black Manta, another unusual choice that promises for some interesting plot developments.

Voice actor Bruce Greenwood (Batman: Under the Red Hood) is back as Batman as is Nolan North, an erudite voice actor from Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths where he voiced both Green Lantern and Power Ring and Hulk Vs. in which he voiced Deadpool will be featured as Superman and Superboy. North isn’t the only actor pulling double duty, however. DC Animated regular Phil LaMarr (Justice League’s Green Lantern) is voicing Aquaman and Green Arrow. Celebrities Rob Lowe and Marina Sirtis will be providing voices later in the series.

Greg Weisman (SUPERMAN/BATMAN: APOCALYPSE, DC COMICS SHOWCASE: GREEN ARROW, GARGOYLES and SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN) and Brandon Vietti (Legion of Super Heroes, The Batman, Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Batman: Under the Red Hood) are the developers of this program along with Geoff Johns (Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment). Weisman and Vietti are getting to be old hands at crafting these comic book/animation projects and it shows. Not to cast the die too early, but this cartoon is easily of the same quality of the Justice League animated series. The animation is fluid (unusually so for TV), the dialog sharp and the plotting smart. Character designs by Phil Bourassa (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths) are different enough to be eye-catching without being distracting.

Weisman and Vietti have apparently drafted up plots for two years’ worth of episodes, but there is no word from DC Entertainment yet as to their plans. As a follower of TV cartoons. I have seen many an excellent animated series meet an early end due to low viewing figures. Seeing as how Warner Bros. has re-evaluated their properties and formed DC Entertainment to focus on their many characters in various mediums from the big screen to video games, I had high hopes that they will see the potential in Young Justice.

If you are on the fence about this cartoon, get off it quickly. This is the most high quality animated DC Comics cartoon in a long while.

Make sure to bookmark the official website for Young Justice for updates.
