Scryptcomics on the future of comic book movies

Feeling under the weather, but that means that I can direct some much-deserved attention to the Scyptcomics blog where a rather interesting thoughts on the comic book movie as a genre are posed as well as its future. I agree with much of what is said over there and encourage readers to visit the blog and bookmark their site.

Some people have predicted that comic book movies will die out and become old, but I think otherwise, and this is why… The phrase “Comic Book Movie” will become a genre of its own. (my prediction of course)

The Avengers has set a standard, but what can it be categorized as? Thor was a fantasy movie, Iron Man was Science Fiction, Captain America was an action film, The Incredible Hulk was horror in a sense, and all of the post credits scenes were drama build ups. So if The Avengers is all of these in one, then what is it? That’s right, it is a Comic Book Movie, and there is no other way to say it.

So what do future CBMs have to do? They don’t need to follow what the Avengers did. That is when it will become old. We don’t need a Justice League movie that is built up in the same manner (which it won’t be, because the JL movie in the works will have solo films from it as planned, but it is an example). What we need is something fresh. With the CW network using its Television angle, they are producing live action events with Green Arrow and Wonder Woman. Those should cross over into the planned movie.

Whether it is on the big screen or small screen, it doesn’t matter. The universes established by the comic book companies are huge. They should utilize that to their advantages, instead of relying on 1 or 2 mainstream characters.

Since Spiderman 2 people have been saying comic book movies will die out. Prove it. The list of characters out there says that we have only scraped the surface, and we can appease to all genres of film lovers. So bring on more CBM’s and lets learn from our past mistakes.

New images from the upcoming Avengers film show the team in action

The 2012 Summer action flick the Avengers is filming in New York City after having wrapped up an explosive action sequence in Cleveland. On location cameras have caught what looks to be a downed Quinjet (the Avengers’ customized jet vehicle) and a trio of heroes running into action from the wreckage.

The images shows the first clear glimpse of the costume worn by Jeremy Renner (Hurt Locker) as Hawkeye and the personalized jumpsuit Scarlett Johansson has donned as the Black Widow. Chris Evans’ revamped and modernized Captain America uniform still looks awkward and bulky to me, but maybe my opinion will change when I see it in action.

The Avengers arrives in theaters on May 4, 2012.

Cowboys & Aliens trailer premiers 11/17

Based on the graphic novel by Fred Van Lente (Incredible Hercules, Taskmaster, Marvel Zombies 3, 4 and 5) and Andrew Foley, Cowboys and Aliens could be the surprise hit film of the Summer. Starring Daniel (James Bond) Craig and Harrison (Han Solo) Ford, the film is set in the traditional ‘Old West’ with an added science fiction twist.

Here’s the premise from wikipedia:

The Year is 1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger named Jake Lonergan (Daniel Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford). It’s a town that lives in fear. But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known. Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveller Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse of former opponents — townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors—all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

Since the title Cowboys & Aliens first hit the public consciousness as Favreau’s next film, reception has been mixed. It’s an odd title and strikes some as comedic or ‘quirky.’ Director Jon Favreau (Iron Man), the movie will feature copious special effects but promises to be sparing in the green screen work. In fact, Favreau has indicated that he is approaching the move as a ‘spaghetti western’ a la the Man With No Name… with aliens. The promotional poster supports this claim as Craig can been seen wearing a raygun on his wrist while gripping a Winchester rifle in his other hand. This could also be one of the few Summer blockbuster films to not be filmed for 3-D.

The movie grabbed some major press at the 2010 San Diego Comicon when attendees got an early glimpse of the trailer and were graced with Harrison Ford at his first convention appearance. It was a major shift in the status quot for Favreau’s first major film after Iron Man II and the movie finally started to gain some ground.

Those unable to attend the San Diego Comicon will finally get a look at Cowboys & Aliens this Wednesday when the trailer hits the web.

Cowboys & Aliens has a July 29, 2011 release date.

X-Men First Class filming images

At one time, the X-Men was hands down the most popular title published by Marvel Comics, the home of Spider-Man, the Hulk and Captain America who all were forced to admit second fiddle status to the merry mutants. So popular were the X-Men that rumors of a feature film in the 1990’s brought about talk of big name stars and stellar action sci/fi director James Cameron (then famous for the Terminator). The film took much longer to finally reach the cinema, but when it did Bryan Singer’s film was both a shocking deviation from the source material and a clear indicator that he understood the comic book’s meaning and its attraction.

The 2000 X-Men movie arrived after Blade but before Spider-Man and Batman Begins took the movie-going world by storm. It is an unusual film in that the cast is a mixed bag of celebrities and unknown actors in addition to the noticeably small budget. I like Bryan Singer’s film a lot and still think the nailed the premise and appeal of the comic in ways that brought new fans into the fold but I must admit that liberties were taken to make the X-Men universe fit into a feature-length package and fit the story that Singer wanted to tell. Most of these changes don’t really bother me, but given the current vogue of superhero flicks as the Avengers take form and DC Comics’ Justice League of America cannot be far behind, 20th Century Fox has decided a do-over is needed. This has become a popular notion after the success of Batman Begins and has led to similar reboots of Superman, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and possibly Daredevil as well.

Singer has been brought back to produce with Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, Kick Ass) assigned as director. Titled X-Men: First Class, the movie is a prequel, but it is becoming apparent that it not just set before the first X-Men movie, it is an entirely different take on the concept, hoping to develop a brand new franchise.

The heart of the classic X-Men comic book is the relationship between Professor Charles Xavier and Magneto. Both men recognize that change is coming and that the growing number of mutations provokes a major shift in the social make-up of the world, but each has a different idea of how to deal with the problem. Xavier preaches the gospel of co-existence while Magneto feels that homo superior are the inheritors of the world. X-Men First Class will tell the story of their friendship and the construction of both the Xavier Institute of Higher Education that seeks to train mutants to control their abilities as well as the mutant terrorist organization known as the Brotherhood led by Magneto.

James McAvoy (Professor X)

In the previous X-Men films, Professor X and Magneto were played by stars of stage and screen Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. Replacing Patrick Stewart is 31 year-old James McAvoy, known in the UK for his role in Shameless and (somewhat) in the U.S. for the comic book movie Wanted. Magneto will be played by Michael Fassbender of Inglourious Basterds fame.

Details of the 1960’s period film have been flowing for months now but do in part to the lackluster reception of the third X-Men film and X-Men Origins: Wolverine spin-off, many fans are looking toward Green Lantern, Iron Man and Captain America for their comic book fix. My hope is that X-Men: First Class will take everyone by surprise and prove to be the X-Men movie that devotees and the general public have been waiting for. No leather costumes and heavily influenced by the Lee/Kirby comics, the film is shaping up to be a closer adaptation than the loose interpretation that we got back in 2000 with a promise to see the X-Men in costume rather than stylish leather and rubber motorcycle gear.

Filming has started just this past month (September 2010) and the news hounds were on site to capture a few glimpses.

X-Men: First Class is still in its earliest stages, with most fans of the franchise still unaware that it even exists. After blogging about comics and film and what-not for the past few years, I have seen other movies start out small like this one and balloon up into a big deal. My instincts say that this film has the potential to be a surprise hit, but I’ve never had an instinctual feeling about any comic book movie to date, so what do I know?

Maybe I’m a late bloomer and this is my mutant ability?

Watch this space for more details as they come.

X-Men First Class: images of Emma Frost hit web

The X-Men First Class prequel has many fans scratching their heads in confusion. A period piece movie set in the 1960’s, all of the details that I have seen to date contradict what we have seen in the previous X-Men and Wolverine films.

Directed by Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake), X-Men First Class will develop the relationship between Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) as they build the School for Gifted Youngsters as a haven for young mutants with nowhere else to go. Sebastian Shaw (played by Kevin Bacon) will play the role of super villain as the head of the Hellfire Club, a secret association devoted to mutant domination of the world dating back generations.

Recently, the film had started production, and finally the first images are available of January Jones as Emma Frost, the telepathic English socialite and White Queen in the Hellfire Club.

DeNiro and Law join Thor cast

The Internet is all abuzz about the latest casting announcement for the upcoming Mighty Thor film directed by Kenneth Branagh. Robert DeNiro and Jude Law appear to be joining the cast that ids already rather ample to begin with.

So far, this is what we have:

  • Chris Hemsworth as Thor/Dr. Don Blake
  • Tom Hiddleston as the evil Loki
  • Brain Blessed as Odin
  • Natalie Portman as nurse Jane Foster
  • Colm Feore and Stellan Skarsgård as unnamed characters

While many are unsure of exactly who DeNiro and Jude will portray in the film I think I have this one figured out. DeNiro is a dead ringer for grim weapons master Hogun and that leads me to believe that Law will play the swarthy Fandral, two parts of the legendary Warriors Three.

Fandral, Volstagg and Hogun: The Warriors Three

Fandral, Volstagg and Hogun: The Warriors Three

The trio of Asgardian adventurers have been a staple of Thor’s supporting cast since the mid 1960’s. In most cases the characters are added to a story to bring a level of brevity to a dire situation, usually at the expense of the voluminous Volstagg. All three are noble warriors, yet each has a certain broad characteristic that stands one out from the other.

A sword master and devilish rogue, Fandrall is a die-hard romantic often attracted to the fair sex and greets danger with a delightful air of exuberance.

The dark and grim mace-bearing Hogun is resigned to the practical and gloomy role of the trio, attempting in his way to keep them on task during an adventure.

The third member of the group, Volstagg, is a consummate coward and spends his time either eating or making excuses for not getting involved in a battle. Nearly every instance featuring the Warriors Three has centered on Vostagg making some bold lie about how not fighting was a nobler and kinder act to his opponents.

If my guess is right, the inclusion of the Warriors Three is not only a sign that the cast of Asgardian heroes is becoming more developed but it is also a sure sign that the Thor film could be set for a multi-picture deal in order to fully take advantage of all these characters.

The Mighty Thor is set to hit the big screen on May 20, 2011.

-UPDATE-

Since the article was initially written, there have been some casting changes:

  • Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs) as Odin
  • Ray Stevenson (Punisher: War Zone) as Volstagg
  • Stuart Townsend (Dorian Gray in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) as Fandrall
  • Tadanobu Asano (Ichi The Killer) as Hogun

All together now, the Mighty Marvel Movie Manifesto…

With the press hopping like rabid monkees over the possible and potential changes to the status quot at Marvel Entertainment, I thought it might be a good time to revisit what is actually happening against what could be happening. In an exclusive interview, President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige layed out the details of Marvel Entertainment’s plans regarding their characters in film.

After all of the ‘will Namor meet Ariel the Mermaid’ rumors circulating out there, consider this post a return to reality.

Here they are:

Iron Man 2

iron_man2First up is Iron Man 2, the sequel to last year’s wildly successful movie starring Robert Downey, Jr. as billionaire industrialist Tony Stark. Jon Favreau returns as director, and is “in week three of his director’s cut of Iron Man 2.”

The movie maintains all the elements that made the first one so successful, but with the addition of interesting new characters, particularly Mickey Rourke’s villain and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. Don Cheadle has taken over the role of Jim Rhodes played in the first film by Terrance Howard. Footage confirming that there is action in Iron Man 2 involving War Machine was unveiled at this year’s Comic Con in San Diego. The film is due to be released in May. Johansson can be expected to appear as Black Widow in other Marvel projects (read The Avengers).

Captain America

captainamerica_head3

Feige is openly enthusiastic about the signing of Joe Johnston to direct The First Avenger: Captain America. Johnston started his movie career as an effects illustrator and designer, and eventually a visual effects art director,  for Industrial Light and Magic, working on the original Star Wars movies and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

As to rumors that The First Avenger: Captain America will have a World War II setting, Feige confirms that the movie will be set in “the Marvel version of that time period.” As to whether or not the Red Skull will be featured, the answer is an emphatic “maybe.” Feige acknowledges there are certain characters that readers would expect to see, and they’ll most likely be in the film.

[Sam Jackson may also appear as a young Nick Fury in WWII]

The First Avenger: Captain America will go into active pre-production in October of this year, and will probably start filming around June of 2010.

The Mighty Thor

thor07coverAlso going into production in 2010 is Thor, based on Marvel’s comic book featuring the mythological Norse god of thunder as a superhero. Chris Hemsworth, recently seen in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek reboot as George Kirk stars. Acclaimed actor and director Kenneth Branagh is signed to direct, and is “deep in preproduction.” Branagh’s involvement came after a “lot of meetings and a lot of phone calls.”

Ant Man

antman(still in production???… ooookay)
Ant-Man is being developed by Edgar Wright, director and co-writer of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Feige says the script is very funny and very much in keeping with what fans of the original comic book character would expect. The movie is not expected out before The Avengers.

Hulk

hulkOn hold, possibly a third Hulk will appear after the Avengers film.

Rumored films

(check out the Shang-Chi rumor written about here yesterday!… though the writer gets the title wrong)

440px-Shang_Chi
As to rumors that the seventies title, The Hands of Shang Chi, rumored to be in development at Dreamworks, produced by Ang Lee and directed by Yuen Wo Ping, previously the martial arts coordinator of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Tiger and The Matrix, Feige says is “something we’d love to explore.” It is not, however, currently in development.

gene_colan_dracula

What about the Marvel comic The Tomb of Dracula, which was published throughout the seventies, and introduced the character of Blade, who has already been featured in three popular features? Feige says that it isn’t being developed at the moment, although “it might be an idea.” Feige credits the Blade movies for laying the groundwork for the current popularity of vampire movies and TV shows.

Not in the Marvel Entertainment toychest

For the time being, Spider-Man will remain at Sony and The X-Men and The Fantastic Four will remain at 20th Century Fox. Crossovers between those characters and the franchises already at other studios are unlikely.

So that is the story straight from the horse’s President (as of right before the Disney deal was announced). With Disney going on record as not being interested in obstructing any plans that Marvel Entertiainment has put in motion, that should be the way things stay.

Overdue justice for Judge Dredd?

Judge Dredd

Judge Dredd

The most popular comic book character in the United Kingdom, Judge Dredd is also the most successful mix of sci-fi, horror and comics to date. Created in 1977 by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, the character is just one of many great strips that ran in 2000 A.D. under the editorial leadership of Pat Mills. Set in a post apocalyptic future where mega cities are overrun with crime, the decision is made to endow the police with special powers to side-step the need for the legal process of a fair trial and actually murder criminals on the spot. A brotherhood unto itself, the greatest of these Judges is Dredd, one of a batch of clones designed to be perfect policemen. Embodying the cynicism and doom-laden outlook on the future, Judge Dredd was full of over the top violence, tough guy cops and horrific villains. In short, the perfect statement on Thatcher’s Britain. It also serves as an interesting statement on urban decay and the nature of modern city dwelling societies.

2000 A.D. # 168

2000 A.D. # 168

A mega success with young British boys, the comic strip also developed many rising stars of the comic book world of today including Grant Morrison (New X-Men, Batman R.I.P., The Invisibles), Brian Bolland (Batman The Killing Joke), Garth Ennis (Preacher, The Punisher: Welcome Back, Frank) and Mark Millar (Wanted, Kickass, Marvel: Civil War). All that being said, the character has remained more or less a cult hit at best in the United States. An embarrassingly poor film in 1995 has not helped matters. The Sylvester Stallone vehicle butchered the source material and more or less completely missed the point of the comic strip.

Rebellion and DNA Films (the guys behind 28 Weeks Later and Sunshine) have attempted to remount the project and finally bring about justice for Judge Dredd. Aimed at a 2010 release date, there is very little information currently available aside from some early designs by hot comic artist Jock.

Will Anyone Get to Watch the Watchmen?

The most anticipated comic book movie for decades is in peril… again.

Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox have been in legal wranglings over the feature film and who owns what. A comic book mini-series that rocked the comic book world in 1986 so much that you can still feel the repercussions has been in movie developmental Hell for almost as long. Warner Bros. finally found the ideal director for the project in 300’s Zack Snyder and everything seemed right with the world… until 20th Century Fox reminded Warner that Fox still had a claim on the movie from the original movie option from back in the day.

The debate became heated as the Watchmen movie began to receive more attention and become a film that could potentially bring on quite a lot of money. At one point, the 1966 Batman TV series rights entered the ring as a bargaining chip (another realm of muddy ownership status). It all ended up being for naught, as it happens. It turns out that Fox legally owns the distribution rights, creating a very uneasy situation around the future of the Watchmen movie.

Watchmen comic writer Alan Moore was quoted as saying: “Will the film even be coming out? There are these legal problems now, which I find wonderfully ironic. Perhaps it’s been cursed from afar, from England. And I can tell you that I will also be spitting venom all over it for months to come… [DC Comics has] managed to successfully swindle me, and so I will never work for [them] again.”

This feeling of being swindled comes from the fact that Moore owns absolutely nothing from the comic book series that earned him the title of the genius of comic books. Moore and artist Dave Gibbons entered into a work-for-hire contract complete with as reversion clause that would allow the rights to revert to the artist and writer after a period of time. Moore explained his take on it to a ComicCon audience in 1986 “The way it works, if I understand it, is that DC owns it for the time they’re publishing it, and then it reverts to Dave and me, so we can make all the money from the Slurpee cups. ” However, DC Comics never did hand over the rights and the comic remains the property of DC today.
watchmen
What a mess.

From a disgruntled writer to a legal battle over ownership of a project that stands to be the pinnacle or nadir of comic book movies, the Watchmen has been a dramatic disaster of epic proportions.

When the Watchmen movie first became a reality and Terry Gilliam was announced as director, fans were ecstatic… in retrospect perhaps that was where the bad luck which has plagued this project originated. It’s not exactly a fair claim… but the progress of negative juju that this movie has seen is uncanny.

I really hope this can get squared away because from what I have seen this could easily be the most impressive and important comic book movie ever made and audiences should see that kind of thing.

Tomb of Dracula – the movie?

As the press pelts the pen pushers behind the new Batman movie franchise for an all-star cast list in the unconfirmed third installment, writer David Goyer has delivered an unexpected answer. The man behind the Blade Trilogy is thinking of revisiting the long-toothed world of evil once again… but this time without star actor Wesley Snipes.
gene_colan_dracula

“I was reading the ‘Tomb of Dracula Omnibus’ and I hadn’t read them in a long time and I thought it might be cool to do another vampire movie at some point,” said Goyer.

This news may come as no real surprise to some as the third and last Blade film nearly lead to the studio ousting Snipes from the production entirely. It’s an unfortunate state of affairs because even with all of the special effects and stunning story lines, the real pull for many to the Blade movies was Snipes himself. Not just another pretty face, professionally-trained martial artist Snipes also brainstormed many of the franchise’ key ideas from the boomerang-like Glave to the car chase scene in Blade: Trinity. Schooled in numerous hands of hand-to-hand combat from the familiar kung fu to the more obscure sadante styles, Snipes choreographed all of his fight sequences.

Without the charismatic and deadly star, where can this monster film go? The same place all tired franchises go, to the prequel. I’m being cynical, but it’s really the only possibility and given Goyer’s throwaway reference to the Tomb of Dracula Omnibus, I think that is going to be the impetus for this revival.

As stories go, Tomb of Dracula has a lot to offer. A comic book mixture of romance, angst, and action, the Marvel Comics series followed the attempts of a select few to halt the devious plot of the Count himself, freshly returned from the grave. It may seem corny now, but just flipping through any random issue of Tomb of Dracula inspires the mind into a movie-like experience. It may be down to the magnificent artwork by Gene ‘the dean’ Colan and all of those lovely ink brush lines.

If Goyer really is out to start this Vampire thing over, he has no shortage of material to draw from. In the 1980’s Tomb of Dracula was released as an animated film in Japan due to its cult popularity overseas. The first Blade movie was a surprise hit that paved the way for the first X-Men film.

It seems that the vampire killer has the golden touch, but will a prequel have that same quality?
