Bullseye Perfect Game #1 (of 2)

Bullseye Perfect Game #1 (of 2)
By: Charlie Huston, Shawn Martinbrough, Tim Bradstreet
There was a year when no one knew where he was. When Bullseye – the world’s greatest assassin – simply vanished without a trace. In the glare of the white hot lights, no one noticed the lanky stranger with the rubber arm, throwing heat that could, well, take off a man’s head.

See, every man needs a challenge, a moment when he faces impossible odds, when he looks deep inside himself and sees what he’s really made of. Bullseye’s next pitch is one for the history books.

Get a glimpse inside the mind of Grant Morrison in the new documentary premiering Oct 9 in NYC

Film director and writer Patrick Meaney

I’ve been friends with Patrick Meaney since I started building Zebramag.com and was making connections on message boards and at comic book conventions. Not only is Patrick an ambitiously gifted writer, he is also a budding filmmaker.

When we premiered the first issue of Zebramag at MoCCA in NY, both of us rather unfashionably left the building to meet with Grant at a signing at the local Forbidden Planet. Both of us were struck at his mixture of accessibility, honesty and brilliance. The man just oozes a kind of magic that you have to experience to believe.

When Patrick started telling me about his documentary on Grant Morrison, I tried my best to stifle my jealousy and just be happy for him.

Patrick was interviewed last year by Wired about the project and Grant’s importance to the comic book world:

“His life is just as interesting as his work,” said Meaney. “In the ’90s, he went through an abduction experience, where he was taken outside of time and shown the nature of the universe. He used The Invisibles to explore the ramifications of that experience, and even lived a crazy rock-star lifestyle that was largely intertwined with that of King Mob, The Invisibles‘ main character.”

“I think his story’s fascinating. There’s no one out there as interesting to talk to as Grant Morrison.”

Read More Here

I received the press release below this morning and encourage any readers able to attend to reserve their seats now. I’ll try to send positive vibes from my Southern home and do my best not to be jealous all over again.

Good one, Pat.

“GRANT MORRISON: TALKING WITH GODS” is the first ever feature-length documentary on the mysterious and iconic Grant Morrison, one of the most critically-acclaimed and best-selling writers in the history of comics, known for the groundbreaking, counter-cultural “THE INVISIBLES” and for bold reinventions of super-heroes “ANIMAL MAN,” “DOOM PATROL,” “JLA” and “ALL STAR SUPERMAN.” Directed by Patrick Meaney, produced by Amber Yoder, and shot by Jordan Rennert, the film was previewed at Chicago’s C2E2 Comic Con where Halo-8 president Matt Pizzolo first viewed it.

“Grant Morrison is a transcendent, transgressive artist, he changed the way a lot of us read comics while also blowing the minds of people who don’t read comics at all. On a personal level, he’s a hero of mine, so I’m particularly excited about championing this film,” said Pizzolo. “Patrick, Amber, and Jordan have put together a smart, slick, and insightful film that offers a deeper look at the writer without demystifying him… that’s no simple feat. I knew the moment I saw the preview clips at C2E2 that this was something special.”

“It’s extremely exciting to partner with Halo-8 to release this film. They have extensive experience releasing films that are challenging and transgressive, just like Grant’s work, so it seems like the perfect match. I’ve been nothing but impressed by their plans for getting the film out there,” said Meaney. “Talking With Gods is a unique film that needs a unique distributor and Halo-8 is the perfect match.”

“We’re encouraged by the enthusiasm and experience that Halo-8 is bringing to the project,” said Yoder. “They know our audience and the marketplace, and we’re excited to be working with them.”

GRANT MORRISON: TALKING WITH GODS examines Morrison’s 30-year career and the real-life events that inspired his stories. Featuring extensive interviews with Morrison himself, the film delves into his early days growing up in Scotland, the start of his career in comics, the crazy years of the ’90s as his life and his comics became enmeshed, and his recent attempts to turn personal troubles and social darkness into compelling comics. The film also gives insight into his creative process, including a look into his vaunted idea notebooks. Complementing Morrison’s own words are interviews with many of his most important collaborators, including Warren Ellis, Geoff Johns, Douglas Rushkoff, Frank Quitely, Dan DiDio, Frazer Irving, Phil Jimenez, Cameron Stewart, Jill Thompson, Mark Waid, and others.

Trailer

“The film is designed to be accessible both to long time fans of Morrison and to people who don’t know who he is but are interested in the story of a modern philosopher and magician with radical ideas about the universe and our place in it,” said Meaney.

The Complete Peanuts Boxed Set 1975-1978 (Vol. 13-14) (Complete Peanuts) [Hardcover

The Complete Peanuts Boxed Set 1975-1978 (Vol. 13-14) (Complete Peanuts) [Hardcover]
A gift set of the thirteenth and fourteenth Complete Peanuts volumes, in a handsome and durable slipcase. The Complete Peanuts 1975-1976: Good grief, Charlie Brown, we’re halfway there! That’s right! With this volume, The Complete Peanuts reaches the halfway point of Charles M. Schulz’s astounding half-century run on the greatest comic strip of all time. These years are especially fecund in terms of new canine characters, as Snoopy is joined by his wandering brother Spike (from Needles), his beloved sister Belle (from Kansas City), and… did you know he had a nephew? In other beagle news, Snoopy breaks his foot and spends six weeks in a cast, deals with his friend Woodstock’s case of the “the vapors,” and gets involved in a heated love triangle with Linus over the girl “Truffles.” The Complete Peanuts 1975-1976 features several other long stories, including a rare “double track” sequence with two parallel narratives: Peppermint Patty and Snoopy travel to participate in the Powderpuff Derby, while Charlie Brown finally gets to meet his idol Joe Shlabotnik. And Peppermint Patty switches to a private school, but commits the mistake of allowing Snoopy to pick it for her; only after graduation does she realize something’s not quite right! Plus: A burglary at Peppermint Patty’s house is exacerbated by waterbed problems… Marcie acquires an unwanted suitor… Charlie Brown and Peppermint Patty become desk partners… The talking school building collapses… Lots of tennis jokes… and gags starring Schroeder, Lucy, Franklin, Rerun, Sally, and that vicious cat next door. It’s another two years of Peanuts at its finest! Featuring an introduction by comedian Robert Smigel (Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Saturday Night Live).

Prince Namor and the Role of the Anti-Hero

Say what you will for the Golden Age of Comics but they produced one of the most compelling comic book characters around today, Prince Namor the Sub-Mariner.

The Savage Sub-Mariner

The Savage Sub-Mariner

Neither a human nor an Atlantean, Namor is forever an outsider no matter what element he set his winged foot in. Even in his initial adventures, Namor was shown to attack the surface world and defend his kin even though he was never truly accepted by them. Bill Everet’s early Namor comics are a joy of pre-pubescent destruction on a global scale. Namor is an appointed ruker of a mythological undersea kingdom… but he has the temper of a hyper-active 8 year old on a sugar high. His chief enemy was fellow menace to society the Human Torch, an android that combusted upon contact with oxygen (oops). The two tore across the sky in relentless combat in a manner that must have looked like a blockbuster movie to young readers of the time.

Born from the steamy union of an undersea dweller and a swarthy sea captain aboard the SS Oracle, Namor was cursed to suffer from a unique condition that made his mental state unstable due to how much time he spent on land or in the sea. His biology demanded that he split up his life equally between the two environments or else his mind would snap in fits of rage. This explanation was offered up decades after his introduction by John Byrne, a cartoonist who is forever offering up explanations for things as if readers really need them (how can Superman shave? who cares!?). In Namor’s case I think this explanation detracts from his person by stating he is a slave to his biological makeup and not responsible for his own actions. I find this very hard to accept. The Namor I know is completely aware of his actions and their consequences.

The character languished unused for decades before being dusted off by sly Stan Lee who must have looked at Johnny ‘the Human Torch’ Storm and thought ‘I gotta bring Namor back to fight this kid.’ This new Namor awoke to find his kingdom in ruins at the hands of humanity and swore revenge upon the surface world. Even though many years have passed since his re-introduction in the 60′s, up until today, the character still resents the surface world and holds them in disdain. Currently Namor is ruling over a nation of Atlanteans who live as splinter cells throughout the world, hiding in disguise until their ruler calls them to action. Without a home or purpose, Namor has no problem forming an alliance with first Norman Osborn and then with Doctor Doom to take Osborn down at the first opportunity… then another alliance with Emma Frost to defend the mutant population (he is, after all, the first mutant).

namor-susan-stormThe Sub-Mariner is such a great character because he makes his own destiny. There is none of this ‘I have been granted powers therefore I must help the weak and feeble’ garbage that plagues super heroes left and right. No, Namor is a creature of passions. The brilliance of Stan Lee was in making readers sympathetic to this character. He is depicted as strong, intelligent and not without an appeal to the fair sex. Despite his numerous attempts to blow up her home, Sue Storm still found him irresistible. The very fact that Namor co-starred in a monthly comic with the Incredible Hulk greatly boosted his anti-hero reputation. Whereas the Hulk just wanted to be left alone, Namor was a living whirlwind of destruction. Sure he had his moments of nobility under the sea but get him on dry land and in a metropolitan city and he’s out for blood.

The anti-hero is thought of as old hat nowadays which I think is mainly down to misunderstanding the character type. Creating a character who is out for himself rather than his fellow man opens the doors to story possibilities, removing the restriction that the hero must have a selfless motivation. However, it has been misinterpreted today as the grim and gritty sociopath bent by his own deluded mind.

The Punisher, for instance, is not an anti-hero… he’s just nuts. Frank Castle has made a decision that he is justified in killing anyone he feels deserves to die and he’ll continue doing so until he himself dies.

Characters like the Watchmen’s Rorscharch walk the thin line between lunatic and anti-hero, the only thing separating him from the frothing freakhouse being the fact that he is out to save the law abiding citizens from the scum of the city.  One could make a case for painting Rorscharch as a maniac, but deep down he is doing work that he feels is just.

So too is Namor. A monarch of royal blood he should never have to answer for his actions and be obeyed in all things.

They just don’t make characters like Namor anymore. A forthright egocentric superman driven mad if he’s out of the bath for too long.

After Watchmen, Now What?

Seeing as how a major motion picture is due out next month based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen mini-series, DC Comics is anxious to grab any viewers jazzed from the experience. Given the limited nature of the Watchmen comic, however, there’s not exactly much more to read beyond the 12 issues.

So, DC is offering the next best thing, five budget-priced comics that may appeal to a viewer who thoroughly enjoyed Watchmen.

  • Saga of the Swamp Thing #21, March 11
  • Transmetropolitan #1, March 18
  • Planetary #1, March 25
  • Preacher #1, April 1
  • Identity Crisis #1, April 8

swampthingThe Saga of the Swamp Thing issue is kind of a no-brainer as it is a classic. The Anatomy Lesson not only stood the entire Swamp Thing series on its head, but it also paved the way for one of the most impressive horror/suspense comics on the market to date. Swamp Thing was such a success that it introduced a new readership that DC could sell on Sandman, Hellblazer and later spawn the entire Vertigo line.

preacher2_prev2

Transmetropolitan and Preacher are frankly ‘also rans’ in the Vertigo line that were once impressive but have not aged well. Both read like stilted juvenile attacks on authority and frankly I cannot see a fan of Watchmen getting interested in either of them. If nothing else, an issue of Preacher may encourage someone to research Bill Hicks. Transmetropolitan will just make readers confused as to why DC published a Hunter S. Thompson sci-fi series.

absoluteplanetaryPlanetary was a once hopeful new spin on the super hero/super science genre that became plagued with publishing delays and a lack of original ideas. For every brilliant issue there was the inevitable homage to ‘x’ (be it Godzilla movies, Doc Samson, Wonder Woman or what have you) issue that became tiresome real fast. It’s a shame because the artwork by John Cassiday is stunning.

identity_crisis001Identity Crisis may seem like the oddest addition but stacked up against the others it is actually the most appropriate for a fan of Watchmen. The first part of a major event comic written by Brad Meltzer, Identity Crisis took characters that readers had gotten bored with and added new facets to their personae. A gripping tale that really did have a lasting impact on the monthly comics, this could be the perfect read for a novice in the comics field. It also utilizes characters most everyone knows into telling a sophisticated story.

Looking past the obvious problem that in order to sell these issues movie viewers will have to set foot in a comic shop, each copy will only cost a slim dollar. So… maybe it’s the task of the already initiated to buy up these comics and distribute to those unfettered by the Wednesday new release habit?

For more recommendations, I suggest the following for those looking for very well done super hero fare and one book that I just think everyone should read:
The Twelve, Vol. 1
Supreme Power Vol. 1: Contact
Life in the Big City (Astro City, Vol. 1)
Black Hole

Saga of the Swamp Thing, Book 1 (nice new edition)

Real super hero?

This video has recently surfaced on youtube depicting a ‘real live super hero.’

Personally, the fighting looks all too familiar to yours truly as what you get when you ask friends to help out as ‘angry thugs’ in your low budget movie (lots of anxious/awkward kicking and such). The feeling is that this is a viral marketing tool for the upcoming Watchmen movie (hence the smiley face).

There’s another theory that this is a PR tool for Marvel Comics (hence all the Marvel characters at the end), but… for what? A new comic? A new movie or TV series?

For now, all we have are questions and the film below.

Watchmen movie Blog

The production of Watchmen, possibly the most important comic book movie ever made continues and so far… it looks incredible.

The production team has managed to retain so many visuals from the max-series that I’m beside myself. A comic book series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons that was initially intended to make use of newly acquired characters including Blue Beetle and the Question, Watchmen turned into something  far greater. Moore took his know-how from Swamp Thing and the many UK comics he’d worked on and Dave Gibbons grew 20 creative inches taller in one day. Both creators developed a comic book that is still regarded as one of the most definitive statements on super heroes to this day.

By showing the consequences of super heroes in warfare to the complexities of morality and even romantic relationships, this book tore the lid off of super hero comics and exposed its inner workings. Many fear that the  Zack Snyder (director of 300) film will be a travesty, but the director maintains his love for the original work and swears that he will stick by it.

If you follow the link to the  production blog, it looks like he’s 100% on the level.

Film opens 3.06.09
