IDW Publishing is pleased to announce the official continuation of its partnership with BBC Worldwide with its critically acclaimed DOCTOR WHO comic book series, which will now feature all-new adventures of Matt Smith, the Eleventh Doctor. Earlier this year, the television series Doctor Who delivered BBC AMERICA record ratings and reached the top spot on the iTunes TV chart. This January 2011, IDW Publishing launches DOCTOR WHO #1, kicking off an all-new ongoing comic book series.Penned by mainstay writer, Tony Lee, DOCTOR WHO #1 finds the Doctor and his new companions, Amy Pond and Rory Williams, battling holographic spam and ‘friending’ requests on a planet that’s hours from destruction by an alien race. Artist Andrew Currie brings this debut adventure to life, with Tommy Lee Edwards offering eye-catching covers on each issue. Plus, the Eisner Award winning Fables superstar Mark Buckingham also offers an incentive cover for issue #1, and will provide interior art on an upcoming issue, as well. Kelley Yates will also provide an incentive cover for issue #1, featuring a die-cut gatefold image that allows fans to open the TARDIS and see The Doctor inside.Joining IDW’™s DOCTOR WHO comic book series for art duties is Richard Piers Rayner (Road to Perdition), who will tackle a run-in between The Doctor and Jack the Ripper in issues #2-4. Artists Matthew Dow Smith (DOCTOR WHO, Starman) and Chris Samnee (Thor: The Mighty Avenger) will also be featured for special story arcs.IDW’s new ongoing comic book series promises not to dial down the excitement, offering holographic spam fighting Mad Max-esque mercenaries, Victorian Jack The Ripper suspense, penalty shoot-outs against Vikings and Cybernetic Space Pirate Dinosaurs among the many adventures that the Eleventh Doctor will be having. Said IDW’s DOCTOR WHO editor Denton J. Tipton, “There’s going to be something for everyone in this story. For example, fans of the classic series should be on the look out for a classic DOCTOR WHO villain!”“I could tell you who they are, but I’d have to kill you,” adds Lee. “Let’s just say we’ve been given special dispensation to use them, and we have a killer story – in all senses of the word!”
Along with being the longest lasting sci-fi TV program, Doctor Who is also the longest running comic strip TV tie-in – running as far back as the 1960’s when William Hartnell played the first Doctor. The IDW Doctor Who comic book series arrived at just the right time when the program was reaching the US market and had found a new cult following. Spawning a reprint series, spin-offs and mini-series, the comic book is a hit worthy of the TV program.
The new series will launch in January, a restart to mark the adaption of the Eleventh Doctor adventures. It’s a perfect jumping on point for new readers and promises to be a bold new beginning for the creative team as well!
The addition of Richard Piers Rayner and Chris Samnee is quite a boon to the comic and will surely attract new readers. I just hope that Samnee can manage to stay on Thor: The Mighty Avenger as well!
