Quick review: Incredible Hulk #8 – ‘Stay Angry’

Posted by dailypop on June 1, 2012

The Incredible Hulk- ‘Stay Angry’

Story by Jason Aaron, Art by Steve Dillon

Marvel is proud to present your first look at, Incredible Hulk #8, from the fan-favorite team of Jason Aaron and Steve Dillon! Dive right into the Green Goliath’s next epic as Stay Angry erupts pushing the Incredible Hulk and his raged-induced fury to its limits! The criminally insane Bruce Banner has thrown Hulk into the middle of a murderous drug war and Hulk is forced into action; but with villainous mob of this stature- Frank Castle is never far behind! Its all-out war, as the Jade Giant faces off against The Punisher who faces off against a cartel in a brawl that no fan will forget!

-that’s the description from Marvel and it reads pretty much as a spot on description of the actual end product… except that it omits the dog people and their human dog drug lord.

The Jason Aaron run on the Incredible Hulk has been a massive shock to the system for long time Hulk readers. After the cerebral Greg Pak run and the dubious run by Jeph Loeb, it was nearly impossible to figure out just how Marvel was viewing the character. Was the Hulk a light-hearted/goofy action comic? Was it an emotionally charged tragic monthly series about human monsters? Who knows?

I have deeply enjoyed Aaron’s Wolverine and The X-Men for all of its wackiness and his Ghost Rider run was superb… but both have one thing in common and that is humor. Aaron is a great writer of absurd comical action that is extreme in its explosive ‘grindhouse-style’ story lines.. and that is apparently the new direction of the Incredible Hulk. Finally separated from Banner, Hulk has attempted to find a life of his own only to discover that he and his alter ego are inevitably linked.

Left to his own devices and without the outlet of the Hulk’s rage, Banner is apparently a mad scientist of Frankenstein proportions while the Hulk is kinda dull, to be honest. On a deserted radioactive island, Banner experimented with the local animal life in standard Dr. Moreau style only to be hunted down by the mad scientist hunter (yes, that’s a ‘thing) Amanda Von Doom and her hunchback assistant. The artwork for the series, along with the story, has been awkward and clunky. Starting rather strongly with Mark Silvestri, it took a fast downward turn as a mob of fill-in inkers were thrown at the book until finally Wilce Portacio stepped in and the book careened headfirst into a morass of scratchy ink.

Even after destroying Banner in a gamma explosion, Hulk hoped he was free, but somehow the two have become merged again. Merged, but separate as Banner has retained his mad scientist schtick. It’s actually a decent idea and allows Aaron to play a new trick with the Hulk that I don’t think anyone had tried before. Previously Banner dreaded a transformation into the Hulk because it would mean that he would lose control and cause untold amounts of damage. Now, however, the Hulk dreads relaxing because it will mean that Banner takes over and pits the Hulk into one horrible situation after another.

The joke is very lurid and opens with the Hulk waking up in shackles only to battle dog men and finally encounter the Punisher… who just happens to be hunting the dog men (for some reason). The two team up and track the trail of drugs and death to the big boss, a humanized dog in a vintage car. The crime boss had apparently made a deal with Banner in the past, one which interests Hulk very much.

Unfortunately, the Hulk gets pumped full of drugs and eventually passes out only to awaken in yet another terrible situation… and an operation scar on his chest.

Art-wise, the latest issue is a step in a different direction as Steve Dillon takes the reigns and the humorous angle that Aaron has been shooting for finally finds its voice. Aaron and Dillon had of course collaborated on the Punisher MAX series where characters had their eyes yanked out of their sockets and wandered around as if they had escaped from a Three Stooges routine from Hell. It’s not to everyone’s taste and Dillon’s Hulk is very flimsy, but at least it’s more fitting to Aaron’s writing style thank Silvestri or Portacio.

The Incredible Hulk is one of the most awkward comic books I have ever read. For its campy silliness and over the top violence, it kinda works… but it’s like turning a work of classic literature into a parody of itself. If there’s one thing the past ten years have taught us it’s that there’s so much untapped potential in the Hulk. Transforming the series into a kind of Garth Ennis-like comic may be a bit of fun, but it is also selling it short.

Captain America and Hawkeye fight dinosaurs, Spidey, DD and Punisher explore the Omega Effect

Posted by dailypop on January 13, 2012

Marvel’s ‘next big thing’ conference has revealed some interesting developments. Captain America gets a monthly team-up book, starting with the new glory boy of the Avengers, that purple-clad bowman Hawkeye. Over on the street-level books, the events in Mark Waid’s Daredevil book (you ARE reading, right?) explode across the pages of Punisher and Spider-Man in The Omega Effect.

Details below…

Today continued the trend of Marvel’s Next Big Thing series of press conference calls with yet another big announcement from the House of Ideas: the conversion of “Captain America & Bucky” to “Captain America & Hawkeye.” Moderator Junior Sales Administrator James Viscardi was joined by series writer Cullen Bunn, who shed some light on the upcoming series.

The book will be written by Bunn with art by Alessandro Vitti continuing the numbering of “Captain America & Bucky.” “The ‘Cap and Bucky’ series was going to go through this change in stories that didn’t focus on Cap and Bucky in the past and shake things up a bit,” said Bunn. “They contacted me to see if I’d be interested in writing this series. Hawkeye was one of the characters that I love the most, so I jumped all over that. The interesting thing about the series is that it is going to be Captain America and Hawkeye, but it is going to be a rotating cast.” After four issues the cast will change to Captain America and somebody else. There will be both arcs and one-shots featuring Cap and other characters.

“The short and simple of it is Captain America and Hawkeye go out and fight a bunch of dinosaurs,” said Bunn of the first arc. “That’s pretty much how I pitched my initial story. I wanted to get into the dynamic of these two characters who have been Avengers for so long.” The writer also said he wanted to play off their previous relationship and explore how they see each other in terms of how they handle different situations.

———————

In terms of the tone of “Captain America & Hawkeye,” Bunn said the book would be a different type of story than “Cap & Bucky.” “It’s more of a high-octane action story, a little more light-hearted,” he said. “I really want these stories to be a lot of fun. I’ve written the first arc and I’m really going for something fun and entertaining with a lot of action. A real superhero story.”

“Captain America touches on all these corners of the Marvel Universe. There are limitless possibilities, really,” said Bunn. “I know a couple of characters that will be joining the roster initially. I can’t name all of them because I haven’t gotten approval … but there is going to be a ‘Captain America & Iron Man’ and a ‘Captain America & Black Widow.’ There are going to be other characters and definitely some non-Avengers.”

Bunn said he wanted to try to play a little bit in continuity and out by keeping things grounded in the Marvel Universe, but also accessible for new readers. “I want the book to have relevance and be important and reference things in the Marvel Universe,” he said, “but I also want it to be strong enough for people to just read those stories and enjoy those things for what they are.”

When Bunn started making his little list of every character he wanted to have Cap team up with, Captain America and Hawkeye came pretty close to the top of the list, but there are definitely more that he’s hoping to push for. “Captain America and Union Jack is one I’d like to push for,” he said. “I think Union Jack’s a great character, but I love the idea of those two working together. There are a lot of obscure characters I’d like Cap to team up with. … If I could get Captain America and the Enigma Force team up, my dreams will be fulfilled.”

-Via ComicBookResources

Marvel’s week of “Next Big Thing” conference calls with the comic book press continues on Thursday at 3 p.m. eastern, and per usual, we don’t have concrete details on what will be discussed or who will be on the line, but based on the art we’ve received, we’ve got a pretty strong indication.

The first promo image — with the Punisher skull, Daredevil mask and spider web — had a filename of “TheOmegaEffect,” and the subsequent covers sent to the press were of upcoming Avenging Spider-Man, Daredevil and Punisher issues (click through the “related images” gallery on the right to peruse said covers). So it doesn’t take an expert prognosticator to assume that a crossover between those three books, titled “The Omega Effect,” might be coming in April.
—————–
Update: “The Omega Effect” is a three-part crossover between the April issues of Avenging Spider-Man, Daredevil and Punisher, Marvel revealed Thursday afternoon at their latest “Next Big Thing” press conference call.

All three issues will be written by Greg Rucka and Mark Waid, with the two co-writing Avenging Spider-Man #7, then the two writers stay on their usual books; Waid on Daredevil #11 and Rucka on Punisher #10. Each issue will be illustrated by Marco Checchetto.

The story centers on the Omega Drive currently in Daredevil’s possession, which contains critical information on five of the top crime organizations in the Marvel Universe.

“He’s basically trying to beat the clock, trying to find the best application for this thing, and that’s when Frank Castle knocks on the door,” Waid said.

“These five organizations don’t want anybody else to have it,” Rucka added. “Frank’s feeling is, ‘I can keep it safe, and I can use it properly,’ and Matt hears that, as ‘I can keep it safe, and I can use it to kill a lot of people.’”

Showcase Presents Green Lantern TPB Vol. 05

Showcase Presents Green Lantern TPB Vol. 05
By: DENNIS O’NEIL, ELLIOT S. MAGGIN, NEAL ADAMS, DICK GIORDANO, MIKE GRELL, VINCE COLLETTA

Green Lantern’s SHOWCASE PRESENTS series continues with issues #76-100, including the famed stories that teamed Green Lantern with Green Arrow, in which the two heroes face issues of the day including women’s rights, political corruption, religious intolerance and more – all while battling evil. This volume also includes adventures from GL’s 1976 relaunch, collected here for the first time!

Doctor Who: The Mutants

Doctor Who: The Mutants
Starring Jon Pertwee
Jon Pertwee’s Doctor is sent by the Time Lords to deliver a mysterious sealed container to an unknown recipient. So begins “The Mutants,” the penultimate adventure in the ninth series of Doctor Who (1972), a run that also included “The Sea Devils” and “The Day of the Daleks.” The Doctor and Jo (Katy Manning), find themselves on a space station belonging to Earth’s crumbling 30th-century empire, while below the planet Solos is on the verge of independence, a situation the corrupt Marshal (Paul Whitsun-Jones) is at pains to avert. What follows is a tale of opposing factions, assassination, genetic mutations, and running around in caves. The story concerns the aftermath of empire, a topic very relevant in the Britain of 1972, and the devastating environmental effects of industrial development (though with the ecology movement then gathering force, the following year’s “The Green Death” addressed similar topics far more effectively).

There are plenty of elements packed into “The Mutants,” yet the story feels padded and, the mutant costumes apart, is not helped by weak production values. Though far from a classic, this is still an entertaining Doctor Who adventure with Geoffrey Palmer in a small supporting role and a startling homage to the Monty Python “It’s” man. –Gary S. Dalkin

Doctor Who: Terror of the Autons

Doctor Who: Terror of the Autons
Starring Jon Pertwee
“I have come to destroy you Doctor, once and for all!” The Earth is in terrible danger! The Master is back with an evil scheme to destroy humanity and silence the Doctor forever. His plan: To awaken the awesome power of the Nestene-a ruthlessly aggressive alien life form. Once mixed with plastic, they will form into faceless automatons, a willing army of destruction easily controlled by the evil Time Lord himself. This is the terrible threat now facing the Earth-the terror of the Autons. Aided by the Brigadier and his enthusiastic new assistant, Jo Grant, only the Doctor can combat their evil power, but first he must defeat the Master… Originally transmitted in color January 2nd-23rd 1971, this four part adventure starring Jon Pertwee was lost in its original form. Only a black and white version and an edited color American NTSC standard version remained until now when technology worthy of the Doctor himself has reconciled the two, synchronising them into one full color version.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold - Season One, Part Two

Batman: The Brave and the Bold – Season One, Part Two
This second set in the Cartoon Network’s reboot of an animated Batman series continues the fun of part one in brilliant colors, dazzling if low-tech animated resolution, and dry-witted, square-jawed, super-fun superhero action. The series’ conceit is to team up the Dark Knight (not so dark in this incarnation) with another marquee crime fighter from the DC Comics stable. Aquaman, Green Arrow, Jonah Hex, Black Canary, Blue Beetle, Red Tornado, and a slew of other notable or obscure figures make guest appearances in each episode to help Batman outwit and/or out-brawn a supervillain who also may or may not be well known to Batman aficionados.

The tone is light and filled with humor and wisecracking between the rock ‘em, sock ‘em action sequences, with banter that may appeal as much to the older fanboy set as the young Saturday morning kiddie market. Each 22-or-so-minute episode (13 in all) keeps to its own character and story arc and moves briskly along with fast pacing and snappy banter.

Highlights include a team-up between Batman and Sherlock Holmes, and an encounter between Batman and Bat-Mite (voiced by Paul “Pee Wee Herman” Reubens) that is perhaps the most bizarre adventure of the bunch. But the standout is “Mayhem of the Music Meister,” an all-musical episode with the Music Meister played by none other than Neil Patrick Harris.

Fans of Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog know about Harris’s penchant for wacky side projects and his made-for-Broadway-show-tunes voice. They will particularly enjoy the thoughtful wit and playful sensibility that infuses this and most other installations of a popular Cartoon Network offering that deserves a good healthy run as a standout from most of the dreck that is 21st-century TV animation. –Ted Fry

Batman Beyond: Return of Joker [Blu-ray

Batman Beyond: Return of Joker [Blu-ray]
Some diehard Batfans have been slow to warm to the animated series Batman Beyond even though it was created by the same team responsible for the excellent Batman cartoon of the early ’90s. The Dark Knight should be a brooding avenger in a noir-nightmare Gotham City, the purists argue, not some smart-aleck teen four decades in the future, with jet packs, invisibility shields, and other sci-fi gizmos loaned him by an elderly Bruce Wayne (voiced, excellently as always, by Kevin Conroy, his stony bass given a raspy hint of old age), now confined to hobbling about on a cane and monitoring his protégé’s activities from the Batcave. Between its respectful reexamination of the “tortured hero” mythos and its sleek, anime-inspired look, this feature-length movie should go a long way toward quieting their complaints.
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that they’ve brought back the most legendary figure in the Rogues Gallery (voiced by Mark Hamill, deliciously deranged), but exactly how and why the Joker has managed to turn up 40 years after his last meeting with Batman still as youthful and diabolical as ever is explained not only logically but terrifyingly as well. The secret behind his arrival is perhaps the saddest, grimmest twist any purported “kids’ show” has dared to attempt.
(Parents may well want to preview this tape before screening it for the very young.)
Once again, Warner Brothers’ cartoon Batman has outshone all the live-action films, never allowing the thrilling action set pieces or flashes of wry humor to drown out the drama, even tragedy, of the all-too-human superheroes. –Bruce Reid

Slaine: Warriors Dawn

Slaine: Warriors Dawn
Tir-Nan-Og-The Land of The Young. This violent world is home to warrior tribles who worship gods both benign and malevolent. The best of these warriors is a young member of the Sessair tribe
Slaine Mac Roth. Together with his repellent dwarf, Ukko, Slaine, wanders theland encountering all sorts of weird sinister creatures, including the death-worshiping Sloughs.

Pat Mills is the creator and first editor of 2000 AD. For the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, he is the writer and co-creator of ABC Warriors, Finn, Flesh, Nemesis the Warlock , Slaine, Mach 1, Halrem Heroes and Savage. He also developed Judge Dredd and wrote one of the early Dredd serials- “The Cursed Earth.’ He wrote Third World War forCrisis!, a politically-charged spinn-off from

2000 AD, and Black Siddha for the Judge Dredd Megazine. He has recently completed ‘Slaine-The Books of Invasion’ for 2000 AD.

Outside 2000 AD. he is the writer and co-creator of the long-running classic anti-war story Charley’s War, as well as Marshal Law. He has also written Batman, Star Wars and Zombie World series for the US market.

Currently Mills is writing the best-selling series Requiem-Vampire Knight for Editions Nickel of France with artist Olivier Ledroit, and a spin-off series. Claudia- Vampire Knight, with artist Frank Tacito. Two further French series are in production.

Mike McMahon: although McMahon may not have illustrated as many strips as other 2000 AD creators, his importance to the comic cannot be overstated. It was McMahon who co-created perennial classics A.B.C. QWarriors and The V.C.’s and it was also McMahon who gave Judge Dredd his classic, defining, “big boots” look-and two major characters in Max Normal and Rico Dredd.

McMahon has also illustrated One-Offs, Ro-Busters, and provided a classic run on Slaine, where his dense woodcut-styled art wows readers young and old. Outside of the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, he has pencilled Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight and The Last American, which he co-created with John Wagner.

The Batman Filmography: Live-Action Features, 1943-1997

The Batman Filmography: Live-Action Features, 1943-1997
Cowled and scowling, with a winged cape inspired by da Vinci and a thirst for justice born of his parents’ murder, he debuted as a comic book character in 1939. Even his earliest incarnation is instantly recognizable: Batman-the Caped Crusader. A few short years later Bob Kane’s creation leapt from the printed page to the silver screen, a brooding presence framed against the darkened Gotham skyline, ever vigilant to the misdeeds of a host of maniacal and devious enemies. Since his film debut in the 1940s, Batman and his alter ego Bruce Wayne have been a regular presence in movies. In various incarnations, with or without his cheerful sidekick Robin, Batman has remained an American icon, capturing the imagination of each successive generation of moviegoers. This detailed examination of live-action Batman features follows his motion picture adventures, from his first appearances on the screen in 1940′s film serials, through the camp craze surrounding the 1966 television series, up to the Warner Bros. series of summer blockbusters that began with 1989′s Batman starring Michael Keaton. Chapters on each of the seven feature-length Batman movies include extensive film and production credits, a production history, and a critical analysis of the movie relative to other Batman films and the original comic book character. Notes accompany each chapter, and an index and bibliography are included.

Providing insight into the famed Cthulhu mythos of H. P. Lovecraft as well as the countless mythical threats that creep among Earth’s population, this comprehensive handbook explores the transdimensional beings, subterranean creatures, and fantastical beasts that lurk in the corners of time. From encounters with Barnabas Marsh and Wilbur Whateley to dangerous seaside communities, this witty exploration covers the multitude of imaginary dangers, escape options, and chances of survival when confronting these horrors. Shoggoths, Nightgaunts, ghouls, and Cthulhu all have ventured into popular culture in the form of cuddly toys, but as this entertaining overview proves, these monsters are not so warm and fuzzy when met face-to-face, face-to-muzzle, or face-to-tentacles. Authoritative and hilarious, this “survival guide” sheds light on the mysterious and often unimaginable world of Cthulhu.

New Heroes for Hire book unites unlikely heroes

Posted by dailypop on September 21, 2010

In a move reminiscent to the short-lived Marvel Knights team book comes an unlikely assemblage of street-level ‘heroes for hire.’ Using the title from the old Power Man and Iron Fist comic, this is an unusual book due to the team members and the creative team of cosmic gurus Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.

The artwork by Marvel Zombies 2′s Kev Walker should be phenomenal and what appears to be a Doug Braithwaite cover is sure to attract new readers.

Are you in some trouble, do you need someone to save your ass but you’re feeling like you’re too much of a wimp to handle it yourself? Well if you got the cash then Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning (Thanos Imperative) have just the team your looking for!

Well, when I say “just the team your looking for”, I would take a look at the roster first and decide for yourself whether they are going to do any more good than bad.

Ghost Rider (Johnny Blaze), Iron Fist, Punisher, Moon Knight and – after her appearance in the “Hero For Hire” teasers from last week – Elektra make up this rather random new team.
