A small-time hood learns a hero’s secret identity and tries to figure out how to profit from the knowledge. A beat reporter gets some advice from his editor on his first day on the job. The Boy Who Loved Batman: A Memoir

The Boy Who Loved Batman: A Memoir
By Michael Uslan
Is any superhero cooler than Batman? He’s a crime-fighting vigilante with a tragic past, a lawless attitude, and a seemingly endless supply of high-tech gadgetry. In this fully illustrated memoir, author Michael Uslan recalls his journey from early childhood fandom through to the decades he spent on a caped crusade of his own: to bring Batman to the silver screen as the dark, serious character he was at heart. Uslan’s story traces his path from the wilds of New Jersey to the limelight of Hollywood, following his work as Executive Producer on every Batman film from Tim Burton’s 1989 re-envisioning to 2012′s The Dark Knight Rises. Through it all, he helped to create one of the most successful pop culture franchises of all time.

“Don’t miss this spellbinding tale of one man who saw what Batman was-and realized what he could become. See how Michael Uslan took a comic book hero and, through the magic of motion pictures, helped transform him into a world-wide icon!” -Stan Lee, Chairman Emeritus of Marvel Comics and Chairman of Pow! Entertainment, co-creator of Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, and The Hulk

Michael Uslan brought comic books to academia in the 1970s with class (figuratively and literally) and he brought Batman to Hollywood a decade later with the same sort of integrity. I’ve been reading or watching his work since my youth and the intellect always shined through – now with his memoir I also see the emotional backbeat of his hero’s journey. -Geoff Boucher, Los Angeles Times

Generations have grown up with Jaffee s inspired skewerings of our foibles and cultural conundrums. In this deluxe four-volume set, each of the 410 fold-ins is reproduced at its original size, with a digital representation of the corresponding folded image on the following page (so collectors won t have to fold their book to get the jokes). DIY Cubee Dalek (blob not included)

Posted by dailypop on September 29, 2010

The Doctor’s deadliest foes, the Daleks are the result of evil scientist Davros who developed the creatures as the ideal being for survival in a deadly war with the Thals on the planet Skaro. Encased in a poly-carbon shell and armed with unstoppable weaponry, the Daleks waged war across the universe and became the scourge of all living beings, synonymous with death and destruction.

Introduced in conclusion of the Doctor Who episode ‘The Dead Planet’ in 1963, the Daleks are the brainchild of author Terry Nation and designer Ray Cusick and have become the most popular monster of the program’s history. Re-introduced in 2005 and re-tooled in gleaming gold, the Daleks plagued the Doctor anew and attracted an all-new generation of followers who hid behind the sofa when their battle cry ‘Ex-ter-min-ate!’ bellowed from the TV speakers.

Now you can make your own ’05-era Dalek in paper!

The Complete Peanuts Boxed Set 1975-1978 (Vol. 13-14) (Complete Peanuts) [Hardcover

The Complete Peanuts Boxed Set 1975-1978 (Vol. 13-14) (Complete Peanuts) [Hardcover]
A gift set of the thirteenth and fourteenth Complete Peanuts volumes, in a handsome and durable slipcase. The Complete Peanuts 1975-1976: Good grief, Charlie Brown, we’re halfway there! That’s right! With this volume, The Complete Peanuts reaches the halfway point of Charles M. Schulz’s astounding half-century run on the greatest comic strip of all time. These years are especially fecund in terms of new canine characters, as Snoopy is joined by his wandering brother Spike (from Needles), his beloved sister Belle (from Kansas City), and… did you know he had a nephew? In other beagle news, Snoopy breaks his foot and spends six weeks in a cast, deals with his friend Woodstock’s case of the “the vapors,” and gets involved in a heated love triangle with Linus over the girl “Truffles.” The Complete Peanuts 1975-1976 features several other long stories, including a rare “double track” sequence with two parallel narratives: Peppermint Patty and Snoopy travel to participate in the Powderpuff Derby, while Charlie Brown finally gets to meet his idol Joe Shlabotnik. And Peppermint Patty switches to a private school, but commits the mistake of allowing Snoopy to pick it for her; only after graduation does she realize something’s not quite right! Plus: A burglary at Peppermint Patty’s house is exacerbated by waterbed problems… Marcie acquires an unwanted suitor… Charlie Brown and Peppermint Patty become desk partners… The talking school building collapses… Lots of tennis jokes… and gags starring Schroeder, Lucy, Franklin, Rerun, Sally, and that vicious cat next door. It’s another two years of Peanuts at its finest! Featuring an introduction by comedian Robert Smigel (Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Saturday Night Live).

It’s a jam-packed Tales of Suspense monster bonanza! And you know you can’t keep a good monster down. Skyscraper-tall lumbering beasts from outer space; muck-covered monsters from the Savannah swamps; lost world anachronisms from beyond time; and they were all here to teach humanity a lesson, whether we liked it or not. After Kirby scares you with his creatures from the id, Steve Ditko will tear at your conscience-from the inside out-in tense suspense-thrillers cast with nervous-eyed dreamers and sweaty-palmed schemers, none of whom make it out with getting theirs. Each and every tale is executed by a master of storytelling-by the talents that defined the comic book medium for a generation-and each one is brought to you, gleamingly restored, in the fan-favorite Marvel Masterworks line!

Watchmen Heroclix Collectors Box Set

Watchmen Heroclix Collectors Box Set
Watchmen. DC Comics’ best-selling graphic novel took readers on a journey into a world where superheroes really existed and explored how the existence of masked heroes would alter world history. Visionary director Zack Snyder brought that groundbreaking vision to film in 2009′s Watchmen adaptation, bringing to life the characters and the world so ably drawn by British artist Dave Gibbons. HeroClix players can now campaign in the world of Watchmen with the HeroClix Watchmen Collector’s Set which includes 25 highly detailed miniatures of the film’s characters, including Dr. Manhattan, Rorschach, Nite Owl, and Silk Spectre. The folks at RiffTrax (Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy formerly of MST3K) have arranged for an encore presentation of their excellent riffing on the Ed Wood classic Plan 9 From Outer Space. I’m still sore from laughing at the August 20th performance complete with a short and musical numbers. The entire event was a blast (aside from the occasional technical difficulty) and I heartily recommend everyone from 6 to 60 attend.

The encore showing will be October 8th.

Thor at the Bus Stop

Thor at the Bus Stop

The independent movie Thor at the Bus Stop is getting a lot of attention lately and I have to wonder of it will cause any confusion over the upcoming Marvel Entertainment picture. In any case the movie looks like a lot of fun.

Read this article for an interview with the filmmakers: http://www.lvrj.com/neon/norse-god-of-thunder-wanders-vegas-suburbs-in-thor-at-the-bus-stop-61438167.html

The new film from Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, Zombieland, is doing quite well but the writing team has something to say about their next project, a little film based on the Spider-Man villain Venom.

“We’ve written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they’re pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward…”

Matchstick Dalek

Matchstick Dalek

Here’s one Dalek that has every reason to fear humanity, especially smokers. It took two years for 66 year-old Sussex native Brian Croucher to build the monster in the privacy of his sitting room. In my home town this thing would be kindling in no time flat… I hope that he keeps it in a cool dry place!

The title says it all for this article focusing on the star of Torchwood. Personally I preferred Captain Jack as he was originally portrayed in his first appearance before he became a cross between Sylvester Stallone and Charles Nelson Riley, but his fan base is both devoted and avid.
