Yes, I like Superman and making him "edgier" to appeal to the cliched view of a modern audience is a mistake (and Oy! That new costume!). The concept of returning him to his earliest days as a social crusader was quite a good one - tho' putting him in a T-shirt, jeans, and a napkin for a cape wasn't - but the portrayal of his personality is compromised, particularly in Johns and Lee's Justice League where he's as big a jerk as the rest of them. For me Clark is the ultimate good guy, he *can* make mistakes but he is no bully and he always worries about overstepping boundaries yet he isn't a conservative, he would look upon conservative selfishness as misguided at best and certainly dangerous but he always has hope that people will come to their senses (and he wouldn't let them get away with ruining people's lives). This is why Luthor is such a great villain, he's the antithesis of Superman - a selfish, inhumane, narcissistic, egomaniacal scumbag who rejoices in his own power and believes he deserves it all while despising the weak and loathing someone strong like Superman who defends the weak and the meek against the strong and vile.
Superman vs The Elite and the original comic book ask some important questions of the modern Superman, yes the Elite are presented as a critique of the Authority and their ultraviolent Kool but there is still a useful querying of the Man of Steel's position as a somewhat inert defender of the status quo. At the heart of the story, tho', is the reality that if Superman took it upon himself to *violently* change things he would no longer be himself and would run the risk of being corrupted and becoming a superpowerful Lex Luthor. An interesting review, Jameson. It's a pity that the "New DC" haven't gotten the Man of Tomorrow right and have instead made him callow and juvenile, there are so many things they could do with him without altering his essential nature and turning him into a modish jerk.
