Doctor Who 1963- 2011

Posted by dailypop on January 25, 2012

I’m not a fan of linking the BBC Wales Dr Who to the Classic 1963-89 program, but this is a lot of fun. From the astounding Babelcolour, the video takes clips from each and every program from 1963′ An Unearthly Child all the way up to this past Christmas’ The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe, even including some rare appearances by the main cast and the Peter Cushing films!

If you listen closely you’ll hear McCoy delivering the speech from the Pandorica Opens… which is a real treat.

Please be sure to look at Babelcolour’s other videos as they are very good.

  1. Pretty good and concise except for one thing. I found it odd that he omitted images of Colin Baker. Even McGann had a quick shot.

Ugh, yeah that is weird… I don’t like that either, now that you point it out. Have you been keeping up with any Big Finish audios? I’m waiting on Tom Baker in Foe From the Future and The Valley of Death myself.

      • Sadly no, I let my subscription lapse years ago. The last one I listened to was Project: Lazarus. I’m so behind and can’t afford to catch up.

Ah, I didn’t realize. There are some videos on dailymotion and youtube that you may find helpful in catching up. Grabbing them off ebay can be cheap too… or you could drop Jason a line.

Will you be reviewing those, Jameson? I lost much of my hearing a few years ago so I’d be interested if you think they are very good. Also have you seen the Caves of Androzani Special Edition documentary Chain Reaction? If so, is it any good? I’ve read that Nicola Bryant is in it so that’d be reason enough to get it (!) but to be serious I wondered if the Special Features make it worth getting (as I have the original Caves and Talons of Weng Chiang dvds) if I can get Revisitations cheap.

Yes, I plan to review those. I’ve been continuing to chug along on the Big Finish material an am just up to Omega right now. I do recommend the Special Editions if, like me, you enjoy the documentaries. However, I can’t recall Chain Reaction. I’ll give it another view and let you know. The Resurrection of the Daleks Special Edition DVD, on the other hand has an astounding feature on the Peter Davison era (unfortunately narrated by David ‘will work for dental work’ Tennant).

Ha! I’ve heard that Tennant calls the Fifth Doctor “*My* Doctor” – um, well, that’s nice, Dave :)
Thanks for your help, sorry to be a pain but are the likes of Mannequin Mania, Earth Story and Dalek War good dvds?!
I really enjoy the documentaries, I got the misnamed UNIT Tales boxset cheap and that has a fine one on Invasion of the Dinosaurs. Interestingly Terrance “You See” Dicks goes on about the extremist “do-gooders” in that story (Adam, Ruth and co) but he doesn’t seem to see that Hulke also satirizes the right-wing conservatives who are behind the scheme such as Finch and Whitaker which is irritating, he lets his more conservative views blind him to the fact that Hulke savages those from both extremist viewpoints. And after all what is the Doctor but the Ultimate Do-gooder?

Dalek War is one of the best box sets ever of only for the video definition and the documentaries. You may want to give Earth Story a miss. I recall adoring Mannequin Mania but I’m a sucker for that era. The New Beginnings set is also highly recommended.

Thanks. I’ve been waiting for Dalek War to drop in price and Mannequin Mania too, and now I MUST have them! I do have New Beginnings as well as The E-Space Trilogy I couldn’t NOT have them, Peladon Tales was worthwhile for Curse and Beneath the Surface was of course enjoyable for Silurians and Sea Devils as well as the opportunity to laugh at the dire and justly derided Warriors of the Cheap.
I must admit to dithering over getting Frontios as though I remember that story being good I don’t know if the extras justify getting it… Ah, decisions, decisions!

    • dailypop said

I was just thinking of Frontios, actually. The extras are interesting, especially the behind the scenes material regarding the death of the initial director, the explosions that often failed to go off on set and the sets themselves falling apart. Very entertaining and the story holds up in my opinion. Beneath the Surface could be one of the best sets as well, even in spite of the variation in quality.

Yes, I think that Serial Thrillers, the documentary on Robert Holmes from Pyramids of Mars, is very good. I’d say that of the box sets I have The Key to Time is a nice piece of work even for those, like me, who aren’t overly enamoured of that season while the E-Space Trilogy and New Beginnings were also more than worthwhile to my taste, although much of what Christopher Bidmead says makes me want to reach the screen and punch him in his “private area”!
I don’t know if you’ve seen the Android Invasion dvd but the Philip Hinchcliffe Life After Who documentary hosted by his daughter, Celina, is excellent one of the best on any Who dvd, unflashy, unpretentious and just really well-done. It knocks the rather boring Nicholas Briggs-presented Making Of The Android Invasion into a cocked hat (there’s a sequence where he interviews village folk who were there at the time that is excruciating and pointless, I felt embarrassed watching that!).
