The Dark Knight Rises trailer

Posted by dailypop on July 15, 2011

Get it while you can, folks.

Or see the new Harry Potter.

Here’s a run down via EW’s popwatch in case the video is down:

The first teaser for next year’s The Dark Knight Rises is airing in front of a little movie called Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows–Part 2. For those of you who missed the Hallows midnight screening because you’re too tired/too busy/too no-longer-a-college-student, here’s the lowdown on the Rises preview. It kicks off with a montage of scenes from Batman Begins, with Bruce Wayne walking over the frozen tundra while Liam Neeson narrates his speech about becoming “A legend, Mr. Wayne.” “Every Hero Has a Journey,” say the intertitles. “Every Journey Has an End.”
Cut to: A shockingly intimate shot of Gary Oldman’s Commissioner Gordan, lying on a hospital bed, breathing through what appears to be an oxygen mask, speaking in a tremulous voice. He tells someone offscreen — it’s pretty clear that he’s talking to Batman — that people believed in him, but then, suddenly, “You were gone. Now there is evil rising. The Batman must come back.” From offscreen, Christian Bale’s voice — and this sounds specifically like his Bruce Wayne voice, which could indicate that Gordon has figured out Batman’s true identity — says, “What if he doesn’t exist anymore?” Gordon, sounding like a man who hears his own death rattle: “He must…he must…”
There’s a quick shot of Tom Hardy’s Bane in his weird mask which literally looks exactly like that photo from a couple months ago, then a long shot of buildings collapsing which literally looks exactly like that poster from a couple days ago, and then the real attention-getter: A single shot of Batman, braced for a fight. Bane steps into view. We only see him for a second, from over his shoulder, but he looks huge. For the first time in the Nolan Batmen that I can remember, the Caped Crusader actually looks a bit scared. (The shot only lasted for literally 2 seconds, but I could’ve sworn Bats was wearing a new outfit.) A final title promises, “The epic conclusion to the Dark Knight legend,” while terrifying chanting plays in the background.
All-in-all, it’s a weird way to launch the year-long lead-up to Rises. In my sold-out Potter theater, there was nary a cheer or clap after the trailer, which either indicates that everyone was stunned into confusion, or I somehow found the one theater in the country filled with people who had no feelings whatsoever about The Dark Knight. Let’s try to decode the trailer with some theories:
–When Gordon tells Batman, “You were gone,” it seems like an indication that, following the climax of Dark Knight — in which Batman become a hunted fugitive, Bruce Wayne decided to retire his alter ego. Maybe Rises will be about his attempt to start a new, normal life — kind of like Peter Parker in Spider-Man 2 — only to get called back into service after the arrival of Bane. The haunted man of violence who tries to lead a peaceful life, only to be forced by circumstances and fate to return to his old ways, is a recurring plot point in the films of Michael Mann — a director who has had a huge influence on Nolan’s work.
–What’s up with all the destroyed buildings, and why does Gordon look like he’s on life support? For hints, look back to the storyline that introduced Bane to the Batman mythos. In “Knightfall,” Bane freed Batman’s Rogues’ Gallery from Arkham Asylum and set them loose on Gotham City, creating relentless mayhem and sending the city spiraling into anarchy. People have theorized that the strange chanting is coming from Arkham inmates. It’s possible that Gordon was injured by Bane — or perhaps even targeted. As for the buildings, here’s a wild idea — could it be that Nolan is flavoring his story with elements of “No Man’s Land,” the other great Batman story arc about a citywide descent into anarchy? Sure, “No Man’s Land” seems a bit fantastical for Nolan’s realist mythos…but then again, so does Bane.

–Lastly, a note about that shot of Batman and Bane. When you think about it, all of the villains in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight weren’t really all that physical; the Scarecrow and Ra’s al Ghul were both most dangerous when they were getting inside of Batman’s head, and the Joker openly scolded Batman at the end of Dark Knight for thinking that their battle would just come down to fisticuffs. (There were also various gangsters who did various gangster things.) It’s interesting, then, to consider that Bane is such a beast of a man — you can tell that these two dudes will wind up fighting each other tooth and nail, just like Schwarzenegger and the Predator (or, more recently and hilariously, the Rock and Vin Diesel in Fast Five.) And something about the finality of all the intertitles — “Every journey has an end, the end of the Dark Knight legend” — makes me wonder if Dark Knight Rises will be a genuine ending. Like, not a “Superhero flies off into the night, forever hunting evil” ending, but an old-fashioned “This story is over, it will not begin again” ending ending. (Remember: When Bane met Batman in the comics, this happened.) And since Nolan, Bale, and Warner Bros. are adamant that the Dark Knight series will end with this film, you have to wonder: Could this be the first superhero movie with a genuinely unhappy ending? Could Christopher Nolan’s Batman die? Or at least be very badly injured?

X-Men: Schism and the future for mutantkind according to Jason Aaron

Posted by dailypop on July 15, 2011

When the X-Men first began, Scott Summers was the star pupil to Professor Xavier. An introvert, the grim Cyclops took his role in the team to be the rock at its center, even to the point that he was reluctant to start his own family and hand over the team to Storm back in the day. Currently he is the leader of a compound built on the ruins of Magneto’s Asteroid M called Utopia. The few remaining mutants cluster together off the coast of San Francisco in hopes that they can wait out the revival of their race or at least find comfort in numbers.

Shunning the teachings of Charles Xavier, Scott has stricken Professor X from the island and embraced a much more extreme attitude toward the protection of his mutant heritage. He is a changed man, hardly the uneasy teenager that readers saw at in the 1960′s and has grown almost stoic with the reality of the risks he must take to insure the safety of his people.

In sharp contrast to Cyclops, Wolverine was the loner and reluctant team member of the X-Men when he was first introduced. It almost seemed that he joined up specifically to enrage his superiors in Canada’s Department H. Feral and unstable, Wolverine embraced the teachings of Eastern philosophy and attempted to find himself through mediation. His life with the X-Men changed him into a caring and sociable person to the extent that he is now on several superhero teams outside of the X-Men including the Avengers and X-Force! While Wolverine may have started as a fighter and a scrapper, he is much more sentimental and caring than he would like to admit.

When Cyclops asks that Wolverine accompany him to an arms talk to the international community, Logan is skeptical but the Scott explains that he needs his friend’s support as well as his protection. It’s a touching moment and the two of them suddenly realize that while they started as being at each other’s throats, they have become fond of each other. Cyclops talk is directed at the entire world, demanding that they dismantle the mutant-hunting Sentinels that have been secretly constructed and housed all over the planet. The response is damning. Kid Omega (aka Quentin Quire), a young mutant terrorist somehow breaks out of captivity which disrupts the proceedings, leading a small assault group of Sentinels on the grounds to be activated. The irony is not lost on Wolverine and Cyclops who make short work of the robots, but the fallout is tremendous.

It’s like the world has suddenly been reminded of the threat that mutants pose and they are not prepared to be frightened by them. Sentinels are activated in every corner of the globe. Cyclops makes a decision… and everything changes.

Schism is a five part story detailing the split between these two characters who have fought side by side for years only to grow further apart in their ideologies. Those differences come to a head when Sentinels across the world are brought to life in an attempt to wipe out the mutant race once and for all.

Series author Jason Aaron spoke to IGN.com about his plans for the series and how it will result in a new status quot for the X-Men as it splits from one to two flagship titles, each one led by a different leader; Wolverine and Cyclops.

Jason Aaron: I wouldn’t assume that it’s going to be the same sort of Mageto/Xavier clash. It’s still being kept secret as to what sparks this clash and certainly how things play out. These are unusual roles for both of these guys. Once they kind of stop for a moment and look back and see how far they’ve come since they first met, it’s a long and winding road. This is a real big crossroads within that relationship.

Certainly everything that these guys [Cyclops and Wolverine] have been through together plays into this in some sense. When Schism opens, you’ll really find them as Butch and Sundance. These are two guys who have had each other’s backs for a long time now. They’ve been on this road for a while and Logan has been there as the good soldier backing up his general. Scott has led the way. That’s where things start. And in the events of Schism, we start to see some cracks in that relationship.

At our most recent X-retreat, we were talking Schism; it’s all the main X-writers and editors in a room together and we really started arguing things. We had people arguing to Scott’s position in Schism and some of them arguing Logan’s position. Both sides kind of thinking there is something wrong with the story in that they could only see one side of it. Then they realized that’s perfect; we’ve got this room of people that are so completely divided on the role of these two characters, and that’s exactly what we want. It’s definitely a grey situation; it’s one where I think fans of both characters can feel justified that their guy is right.

There are actually five artists on this series. They are each doing a different issue. It’s pretty much a murderer’s row of talented artists. It’s at least one guy that I’ve worked with before, and some other guys that I’ve been dying to work with. It’s a great mix.

(via IGN.com)

The first issue just hit the stands this week and is well worth picking up. The mixture of humor, action and drama is 100% Jason Aaron and makes what could have been a predictable story very interesting. Make sure to give it a look!

After Fear Itself… What’s Next for Marvel?

Posted by dailypop on July 15, 2011

The forgotten god of Asgardian legend known as the Serpent has returned. Using the research and sorcery of the Nazi Thule brotherhood, the Red Skull’s daughter Sin has used her father’s knowledge to bring about an unholy wrath upon the Earth. Seven hammers have struck the planet, instilling the worthy who grasp the items with great power at the expense of their minds and souls, causing havoc and mass destruction.

Juggernaut destroys the Raft, releasing the inmates of the Thunderbolts project.

Attuma strikes against Ottawa with a massive tidal wave.

The Grey Gargoyle transmutes the entire population of Paris to statues and Iron Man is helpless to stop him.

The Thing brings Avengers Towers crashing down in the middle of Manhattan and strikes the Red Hulk so hard that no one knows where the beast could have landed.

The Worthy of Fear Itself: Sin, the Thing, Attuma, Hulk, Juggernaut, Grey Gargoyle, Titania and the Absorbing Man

Empowered by the Serpent, Sin has unearthed an army of Nazi mech-suits and struck a blitzkrieg attack on America. The level of violence is so great that the superhuman community staggers to answer the call to action, but are they too late?

Odin has abandoned Earth to the madness as fear grips the population, adding to the Serpent’s power base. The only solution that the All Father can accept is to destroy the planet entirely, cutting off his enemy’s power base. But is there another option? Tony Stark has lain his dignity at the feet of the Asgardian in supplication, hoping that between his genius and the power of the gods, a new weapon can be forged.

As Fear Itself continues to unravel the Marvel Universe, preview images have emerged suggesting that Stark and the Asgardians may develop a rival to the Worthy called the Mighty. I have managed to identify most of the characters in silhouette, but I’m unsure on a couple.

'The Mighty' of Fear Itself: Ms. Marvel, Iron Fist, Dr. Strange, Iron Man, Red She-Hulk?, Wolverine, Invisible Woman?, Hawkeye and Spider-Man

I was very reluctant to get involved in another crossover event storyline, finally admitting to ‘event fatigue’ that readers have groaned about since Avengers Disassembled. However, Fear Itself has really been a wild ride. Watching the story develop and the drama heighten, I have to say that even in an industry rife with such books this is worth reading. Fear Itself combines the worlds of Captain America and Thor, something that seems obvious given that both Avengers have feature films showcased this Summer, but I never thought I’d see it happen.

It’s a blockbuster film for comics with big explosions, characters beloved heroes making sacrifices and rising to the challenge as everything hangs in the balance. For superhero comic book fans, this is just what you want from a mega event.

But… what’s next? Rumors are very slim with only a few mysterious images released suggesting to some that a new Defenders book may be on its way starring Iron Fist, Dr. Strange and Red She-Hulk. I’m not sold on that idea, but I do like it a lot. With the right creative team, it could be great!

The words and messages hidden in the images are intriguing. I’m especially keen on the fact that the Iron Fist’s death at the age of 33 is again being brought up. We really need that character back in his own series and fans have clamored after this first image in hope that one is on the way.

Via CBR.com: “Concrete answers will be provided at Marvel’s “Fear Itself” panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego on Sunday, July 24 from 12:30 to 1:30, but if you can’t join panel attendees Greg Pak, Nick Spencer and Cullen Bunn, you’ll find all the details and up-to-the-minute coverage on CBR. Stay tuned for all the latest teaser releases and developments.”

Bubble madness at bublaa

Posted by dailypop on July 15, 2011

I have started using the social networking site bublaa.

With all the talk of a tech bubble, it’s not surprising to come across a startup that’s explicitly focused on bubbles.

Not outsized valuations, that is, but visual bubbles. Bublaa, which launches Wednesday, organizes discussion topics as graphical bubbles. Each bubble has a discussion forum and tools for sharing.

Users can create their own topics, or bubbles, and invite other users to participate. The bubble grows as the number of participants goes up.

Bubbles can be open to anyone or private. Users can also create a bubble that allows the use of aliases. That enables you to participate pseudonymously in social communities without risk to your real-life identity.

Bublaa plans to generate revenue through premium services and sponsored bubbles. Bublaa starts as a browser-only social media service. iPhone and Android applications will be available later this year. People can join Bublaa through their Facebook or Twitter accounts. The service is now available in the U.S, United Kingdom and Finland, and will be available in 75 countries in November, 2011, the founders say.

It’s a neat site and I have started a few pages there that my readers may like:

Captain America

Daredevil

Doctor Who Big Finish

The Avengers

The Hobbit

The Fall

The Incredible Hulk

I’ll be posting images, news and articles in these ‘bubbles’ but need more users to get things interesting.

Give it a look, chaps!
