Based on the graphic novel by Fred Van Lente (Incredible Hercules, Taskmaster, Marvel Zombies 3, 4 and 5) and Andrew Foley, Cowboys and Aliens could be the surprise hit film of the Summer. Starring Daniel (James Bond) Craig and Harrison (Han Solo) Ford, the film is set in the traditional ‘Old West’ with an added science fiction twist.
Here’s the premise from wikipedia:
The Year is 1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger named Jake Lonergan (Daniel Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford). It’s a town that lives in fear. But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known. Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveller Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse of former opponents — townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors—all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.
Since the title Cowboys & Aliens first hit the public consciousness as Favreau’s next film, reception has been mixed. It’s an odd title and strikes some as comedic or ‘quirky.’ Director Jon Favreau (Iron Man), the movie will feature copious special effects but promises to be sparing in the green screen work. In fact, Favreau has indicated that he is approaching the move as a ‘spaghetti western’ a la the Man With No Name… with aliens. The promotional poster supports this claim as Craig can been seen wearing a raygun on his wrist while gripping a Winchester rifle in his other hand. This could also be one of the few Summer blockbuster films to not be filmed for 3-D.
The movie grabbed some major press at the 2010 San Diego Comicon when attendees got an early glimpse of the trailer and were graced with Harrison Ford at his first convention appearance. It was a major shift in the status quot for Favreau’s first major film after Iron Man II and the movie finally started to gain some ground.
Those unable to attend the San Diego Comicon will finally get a look at Cowboys & Aliens this Wednesday when the trailer hits the web.
Cowboys & Aliens has a July 29, 2011 release date.
