Captain America #600
Anyone reading Marvel Comics the past year has seen what a catastrophic impact the death of Captain America has had on the Marvel Universe. It has been said that Cap was the heart and soul of the MU and with him gone, everything seems a little colder. After the Civil War split the superhero community in two, the greater heartbreak was in seeing Captain America admit defeat and that he no longer understood the country that he swore to protect. After he was killed before his trial could even take place a dark reign fell over the world.
Witness the rise of Norman Osborn, the Cabal of super villains running the government, Hydra infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D., Iron Man de-powered and on the run, etc. etc. While Bucky Barnes has attempted to fill the shoes of his long lost mentor, it has been an uphill battle.
With Steve Rogers’ super soldier serum-induced strength and agility, Barnes is not exactly at the same power level as the Captain America we know. Nevertheless, this new Cap has done his best to thwart the plans of the Red Skull and a host of other villains. Armed with a handgun (which made the news even though Captain America has used guns before… it’s not like Batman used one or anything) and a bionic arm, this new darker Captain America has a stacked deck against him, but everything to prove both to himself and the world that misses its fallen son.
Even so, many readers want to know when the ‘real Cap’ is coming back. There have been hints that something major is planned for this Summer, then this happened:
“Today on the Diamond Comics Retailer Services Web site, retailers were informed via a news bulletin that they could contact their Diamond Customer Service Representative in order to receive and sell “Captain America” #600 on Monday, June 15th. This is an unprecedented move, as new comics have been traditionally only been sold on Wednesdays for over a decade, barring holiday shipping schedules.”
For those of you who do not collect comics, this is a very big deal. New comics traditionally arrive at the comic shop on Wednesday (barring holidays). The Monday arrival means that there is something big that Marvel cannot wait to unleash.
The stellar run on this title by Ed Brubaker, Steve Epting, Luke Ross and Mike Perkins has been unprecedented in its successes. If you have not read this title you have been missing out on the most compelling and exciting comic book series in years.
And apparently it’s about to get better.
More as it comes.
