Posted by dailypop on April 7, 2009

With a new release date of July 21, comes a new trailer for Green Lantern: First Flight.

If you look closely you may notice that Hal is wearing a newly designed costume (rumor is that this is also the design used for the upcoming live action film) and the presence of his arch nemesis Sinestro. Oddly enough, Hal also uses his ring to create as deck chair a la backyard wrestling.

Full synopsis:
Green Lantern: First Flight finds test pilot Hal Jordan recruited to join the Green Lantern Corps after the death of his predecessor Abin Sur and placed under the supervision of respected senior officer Sinestro. The newly recruited officer of sector 2814 soon discovers his mentor is actually the central figure in a secret conspiracy that threatens the philosophies, traditions and hierarchy of the entire Green Lantern Corps. Hal must quickly hone his newfound powers and combat the treasonous Lanterns within the ranks to maintain order in the universe.

A relative unknown after is hey day in the 60’s, the Green Lantern rose in popularity after his appearance in the Justice League animated series (albeit in the form of John Stewart). With the return of the Silver Age Green Lantern Hal Jordan, the monthly comic book series is once again a top seller and enjoys unparalleled sales. In fact, it’s one of the only DC Comics titles worth reading at present.

Comicbookmovie hosted an interview with Director Lauren Montgomery about the upcoming animated movie. Here’s an excerpt:

“That’s what [producer] Bruce Timm wanted the whole time,” says Montgomery, “sci-fi Green Lantern, not necessarily superhero Green Lantern. It’s not like he’s got this moral mission. He’s this guy who happened to come across this ring and he’s basically a space cop. That’s how Bruce summed it up, ‘Green Lantern: Space Cop.’ I think when he’s in space and he’s working directly for the Green Lantern Corps, he has to go by their rules. He’s not necessarily allowed to make up his own rules — even though he’s Hal Jordan and he kind of does that anyway. If he feels it’s right and the Guardians are telling him it’s wrong, he’s probably going to do what he thinks is right. I think maybe when he’s on earth, more of the superhero aspect comes out, because he’s elevated above men.

“The scope of the movie was challenging,” she adds. “We’re trying to make it feel like it’s a vast universe and we wanted to make the Green Lantern Corps feel like it’s got a huge number of Green Lanterns to cover that vast universe, but when it’s animation, you have to draw each and every one of them. We tried to make it feel big, but we only have so many people available to draw all these characters. Getting that feel is difficult, but I think we were able to pull it off pretty well.”

I have big hopes that this animated project combined with the upcoming feature film will do for Green Lantern what the Robert Downey Jr/John Favreau Iron Man film did for old bucket head.
