Double Vision for the Doctor

As Christmas Day looms ever closer so does the latest seasonal special episode for Doctor Who. One of the last stories helmed by Russel T Davies, ‘The Next Doctor’ features Cybermen, a Victorian setting, a notorious Miranda Richardson impersonator and David Morrissey as a character dubiously named the Doctor.

Rumored to be a loose adaptation of Gareth Roberts’ ‘The One Doctor’ featuring a con man impersonating the Doctor, this special will more likely than not be full of whimsey and guffaws as well as the inevitable reminder that the Doctor‘s bizarre deep-voiced true love is lost forever in a parallel reality. The web is rampant with rumor mongering (including this blog post) and the title alone has many Whovians ravenous for clues about the nature of Morrissey‘s role in the episode. I think, however, that it is far too early for a new Doctor and that a ‘light’ Christmas special is hardly the place to debut a new actor in the title role.

David Morrissey has stated that he based his role on previous Doctor actors William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker (three of the best to draw from in my opinion) and has confirmed in interviews that his character ‘believes himself to be a timelord named the Doctor’ rather than the Doctor himself.

Tennant himself has all but confirmed that he will star in the remaining four specials scheduled to air in 2009 and will at the very least will be interested in starring opposite his main squeeze Georgina Moffett and possibly Doctor #8 Paul McGann in the Easter Special (only seen in the Doctor Who movie shown on Fox TV here in the states back in the 90′s). After that, a new Doctor will be on his way.

More as it comes…
