From the earliest days of video games, unique innovations have been a great pull for gamers. The first time that a UFO flew by in a game of Asteroids, I was pretty stunned, for example. This innovation grew in the 1980′s arcade game industry with death scenes, or ‘fatalities’ in Mortal Kombat. I’m pretty sure there’s some whacked-out alternate ending in Donkey Kong that I haven’t seen… but until I do, MK has this corner covered.
A fighting game like no other, Mortal Kombat‘s reputation even made it to the big screen… though few will admit to it. This year the MK fighters go toe-to-toe with the super heroes of DC Comics.
I have to admit that the whole idea of The Flash totally wailing on a guy as they fall toward lava strikes as far more hilarious than exhilarating, but you cannot deny the extreme attention to detail given here. The game allows players to chose from amongst the star fighters of the Mortal Kombat universe as well as the DC Comics pantheon of heroes. The addition of Darkseid is clever, but I’m really overjoyed that Deathstroke is in there as a playable character.
Even the box art (by comic book darling Alex Ross) is astounding, as seen here in this video portraying the full process from start to finish… time delay-style.
The game strikes the stands on November 10th, so make sure to stock up on Mountain Dew… you’ll need it!
