Doctor Who Comics

Posted by dailypop on February 9, 2008

Straight from the finish of the best Vertigo title in generations, Y: The Last Man, artist Pia Guerra recently announced that she will be trading her radiation suit for sharp pin stripes and a pair of trainers. That’s right, she will be joining writer Tony Lee on the new Doctor Who comic book series published by IDW.

This is a major feather in IDW’s cap. They will now be publishing both Star Trek and Doctor Who comic books as each franchise enjoys a major boost in popularity not seen in ages.

The former cult favorite of many since the late 1970’s has flowered into a major export for the BBC after the revival Doctor Who program debuted in 2005 with veteran actor Christopher Eccleston and former pop idol turned TV icon Billie Piper. Having succeeded Eccleston in the role, David Tennant will be entering his third year as the Doctor when the program returns to airwaves in March of this year.

Lee Sullivan’s Doctor Who

Comic book adaptations of Doctor Who are nothing new. Since the series started in 1963, there have been comic strip adventures of the Doctor. In later years, comic book giants such as Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, Dave Gibbons and many more worked on some of the most startling and bizarre tales of the time traveling adventurer.

One of my personal favorite artists on the strip was Lee Sullivan (a sample of his art is above), who had the pleasure of blowing many a fanboy mind with the first visual of a Cyberman/Dalek War about a full decade before the BBC made it happen on the small screen… in a very underwhelming way. Check out his site for many more examples of his fine linework.

Marvel Comics reprinted some of these comics in color in the 1980’s with mixed results. IDW recently started a reprint series of their own, Doctor Who Classics. I’m hoping that with a greatly increased interest on the program, this new reprint series will be more successful.

No word yet on an official launch of this new Doctor Who comic book series which may be related to the mist of speculation around Season Four’s finale… which may bring fans another regeneration.
