Thundercats the movie
Posted by dailypop on June 8, 2007
In a stunning and unexpected move, Warner Brothers has optioned the toy/cartoon/comic book hit of the 80’s, Thundercats for the big screen.
I’m kidding, of course. With the anticipated ticket sales from the upcoming Michael Bay/Spielberg Transformers film, any 80’s cartoon property is up for grabs. Remember the success of Daredevil? Remember Elektra?… No, huh? Well… history may repeat itself here.
Rumor is that the film will be an origin story, fucusing in the coming-of-age tale of Lion-O (much like the first cartoon).
Relive the 80’s here:
The cartoon origin of Lion-O is one of the oddest in cartoon lore. While his fellow cat people sat in cryogenic suspension capsules, young Lion-O’s was broken. This lead to the ‘man in a boy’s body’ concept for the character.
The producers must have felt that the idea would appeal to kids… but ended up never mentioning it again to the point where a casual viewer would never guess anything was unusual with Lion-O and instead just assume he was a bit of a putz now and again. This made the character appealing to me since I like the old Beetle Bailey type of character, but imagine my surprise when I finally caught the premiere episode. I felt a little… uncomfortable.
And in case, like me, you can’t even visualize what a live action version of these cartoon characters would look like, you can check out this:
