Lost comic art, ‘DC’s Portraits of Villainy’

Posted by dailypop on May 21, 2007

While perusing the site TreasuryComics, I read about a lost project by Paul Dini and Alex Ross.

At the time, the duo had recently produced a series of over-sized coffee table books (we call ‘em treasuries) featuring Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman and Shazam (collected in The World’s Greatest Super-Heroes) and were keen to continue onto another book.

The book, entitled ‘Portraits in Villainy,’ would be a series of pinups on one page with copy from Dini about the character (suspiciously like the end pages currently running in the series by Ross and Krueger, ‘Justice.’).

Villains include the Joker, Catwoman, Lex Luthor, Brainiac, Two-Face and even Darkseid himself.

It’s a shame that due to monetary concerns, the project didn’t fly, but hope springs eternal. It might yet surface.

In the meantime, here’s a sampling of thumbnails from Alex Ross (property of the artist).

    thanks for the plug!

yeah, its a damn shame this villains book never came to pass. i cannot imagine how or why DC would pass on a book by Dini and Ross.

i know part of the problem was supposedly the cost, but if you go into any major bookstore chain, they still have at least 1 or 2 of the oversized Ross/Dini books for sale, meaning theyve continued to sell 5-6 years after their release, unlike the monthly pamphlets, which are gone forever–profit wise–in 30 days flat.
